How to play 'Platypus'

My bandmate Alex and I used to do it when we had to wait for something in the city like sound check or a meeting with a venue owner.

It must be played by 2 people; not 1; not 3 or more.

You stand on the sidewalk, and as people walk by you say to them 'platypus?', but you have to say it in a way that equally suggests you could be asking for one or offering one. Either way, you'll be ready to say you meant the opposite, but it NEVER comes up, in my experience. There is always the danger, I suppose that someone actually named 'Platypus' will think you're recognized them, but I always figured I would worry about that if it happened.

Hearing exactly 2 people say 'platypus?', sort of freaks people out. Almost always they will walk away without responding, and many will visibly pick up their pace. It's important to say it just loud enough that it sounds like a normal level of speech, and not to seem physically agressive; let the word 'platypus', itself, do the work for you. Dress normal. Seem normal. It's ALL about the platypus.

Alex and I got the best results outside of House of Shields late in th afternoon when a bunch of pretentious art brats from Academy of Art University were coming by with their world-shaking creations tucked dutifully into portfolia carried like the suitcase that sets off the atom-f***ing-bomb.

Some of them were going back and forth for some reason, and we were able to platypus them more than once.

When we heard one them mutter under her breath with an odd, seething kind of anger in her voice 'I heard you the first time!', we knew we had ruined her day, so we went inside and had a beer to celebrate.

I miss this game.

If anyone in SF wants to give it a try some time, just let me know.
