ON ROGER CORMAN:
Corman began his career in 1953 as a producer and screenwriter, and began directing in 1955. Until his so-called "retirement" as a director in 1971 (he continued to produce films even after this date) he would produce up to seven movies a year; his fastest film was perhaps The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), which was reputedly shot in two days and one night.

Roger Corman’s eye for talent and unique abilities as a mentor have launched a number of stellar careers. Graduates of the “Corman film school” include producers Jon Davison and Gale Anne Hurd; writers and writer/directors Robert Towne and John Sayles; actors Sandra Bullock, Charles Bronson, Robert DeNiro, Peter Fonda, Diane Ladd, Jack Nicholson, William Shatner, Talia Shire, Sylvester Stallone and directors Peter Bogdanovich, James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme, Carl Franklin, Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese.

ON “THE BIG SLEEP” (1946):
Director Howard Hawks transforms one of Raymond Chandler's best hard-boiled detective mysteries transformed into a film noir classic. It is a complex, logic-defying whodunit with a quintessential private detective (Marlowe), false leads, unforgettable dialogue and wisecracks, raw-edged characters, sexy women, tough action, gunplay, a series of electrifying scenes and screen violence, starring one of the most seductive on-screen couples, Bogie and Bacall.

Great film for New Years eve. The guy who plays the dad could use acting lessons. But so many great playa shots, took me right there.

made me wonder what it would be like to spend new years in Gerlach... or move there...

Le Dernier Combat (The Last Battle)
A film by Luc Beson

from the back jacket of the DVD: Experience Luc Beson's dark vision of the future The Last Battle - a cult classic exploration of post-apocalyptic survival.

In a world populated with savages, living amongst the wreckage of a devastated civilization, one man wages war against brutality and isolation.

Filmed in black and white, and almost entirely without dialogue, Besson's first film presents in every detail a haunting premontion of a hostile tomorrow.

Well worth adding to our list....

This has been rather well promoted, but just in case you've been living in some sort of informational vacuum..... Don't worry, I'll be there......

*\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/*

BEYOND BLACK ROCK: WORLD FESTIVAL PREMIERE THIS WEEKEND IN LA

Burning Man Takes Hollywood: Final notes for Beyond Black Rock World
Festival Premiere this weekend!

Well, it looks like we're gonna have a proper party on our hands. AFI
moved us into their biggest theatre and we sold that one out before noon
the next day. Looks like we're gonna get to see a *lot* of our SoCal
friends Friday night! And, according to the Gone Off Deep folks, we
definitely sent a proper message to AFI fest, as only 8 of their 100+
films have sold out, and nearly all of the others were features with big
name talent. (As opposed to this film, which simply features BIG TALENT,
names be darned.)(That means you, of course. And we like you better
anyway.)

If any of you still don't have tickets and want to join the fun, we
still have time to be the first film at AFI to sell out BOTH screenings,
and there are some left still for the Saturday, 3:30 pm show. Grab
yours and meet us at Big Wangs for lunch and drinks before heading over.
OR, if you're itching for fun Friday night, those not holding tickets
have been invited to a nearby restaurant to gather together in wait for
a fantastic afterparty when the movie lets out.

Note for Friday night ticketholders: Please show up early! The Mutaytor
will be leading a procession from Sunset in front of the ArcLight
starting promptly at 8:45, leading us in all our playa formal fabulosity
to the brand new "rooftop village" atop the ArcLight for a very special
30 minute performance with all of the LA skyline as the backdrop! No
playa-time here, folks, as the schedule is tight for us all to catch the
show, BE the show, and get to our seats in that packed theatre before
showtime at 10PM.

Almost the entire Gone Off Deep film crew will be in attendance, as well
as nearly the entire Burning Man LLC and office staff... should be a
very special weekend, a moment of pride for all of us.

Here's the scoop on the evening's festivities, including the
during-the-film gathering for those who didn't get tickets to the flick
but want to join in the after-revelry!

Hollywood Playa Oasis for "Beyond Black Rock" premiere at AFI Festival
(Hosted by Santino's, Sergio Amata, and the Starlite Drive-in)

Santino's
1253 N. Vine St. (SW corner of Fountain Ave. intersection)
Los Angeles
323-464-8260

Burners gathering for the AFI Film Festival premiere of "BEYOND
BLACKROCK" and the Mutaytor preshow are invited to our Hollywood
Playa Oasis hosted by the Starlite Drive-in, Sergio Amata, and
Santino's, two blocks south of the Arclight theater.

6-9 Santino's prescreening meal seating. Gourmet Argentinean
cuisine, traditional tapas, panini, salads, pastas, 40 kinds of beer,
wine, sangria, and soju cocktails. Diners in playawear welcome. Tell
your waiter "we'd like our meal burned" as the secret password for
special treatment from Sergio. Free parking next door at Encore's.

9-9:30 Film premiere event with Mutaytor on roof of Arclight parking
garage. Ticketholders only. Everybody invited to show the Black Rock

had some lovely and strange aspects to it which reminded me of the playa. Remember how each character is introduced as we suddenly come upon them with

This person likes
This person dislikes

and then the camera takes us to some scene where the person is fishing, or doing some other crazy thing.
Movies That Remind You of Burningman
This list was culled from eplaya.burningman.com thread I started. Thought it would be worth while to continue it here. Please add any of your own recommendations or comments on these films.

"Akira Kurosawa's Dreams" - just full of wonderful imagery

"Labyrinth" an "The Dark Crystal" - for the same reasons

"Mad Max" - the whole trilogy

"Fightclub" - infinitely quoteable

"Spirited Away" - what can I say, it was the best film I saw right after BM2002. Lots of parallels

"Dune" - Lynch's version is good, but go get the Sci-Fi Channel's version, especially the Directors Cut DVD. Also snag "Children of Dune". What? You haven't read the book!?!

"Amelie" - cute, fluffy, but with some great moments of creative gifting

"City of Lost Children" for visuals and surrealism

Priscilla Queen of the Desert"
mostly for the costumes. It makes me dream about riding across the playa full speed on top of a school bus with big flapping wings of golden fabric.

"Lawrence of Arabia"

"Straight to Hell,"directed by Alex Cox.After a botched robbery,a band of thieves head for the desert to take shelter, only to find that the wilderness hamlet into which they have stumbled is run buy a murderous, incestous, clan of coffee addicts who are struggling for control against a small band of misfits and a greedy land developer.Highlights include spontaneous song and dance numbers and camoes by Elvis Costello(as a coffee dispensing butler) and the Pogues(as three dead brained cabelleros).Starring cast includes Sy Richardson,Joe Strummer,Courteny Love,Grace Jones and Denis Hopper.Great Desert Fic!

"The Neverending Story"

"Six-String Samurai" Strange costumes, decent music (the Red Elvis'?), fight scenes, general strangeness.

"Shakes The Clown" How many clowns ARE there in BRC?

I will second a vote on the entire "Mad Max" Trilogy.

"Tank Girl" C'mon, they turn a tank and a jet into art cars!

"Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" Especially the Mint 500 motorcycle race.

"tank girl" is number one for me. I love that character's style and find myself mimicking it in my costumes and attitude.

"Siam Sunset" In the final third of the movie, a colorist (!) gets stranded in the desert with a bunch of wankers for a week. What they end up with by doing a lot with a little is very "burner" to me. Plus the main charecter is searching for the color 'siam sunset' because it is the color of peace. this seems like a quintessentially burn-y quest to me.

"from dusk till dawn"??? i swear that movie was inspired by the black rock city!

"A.I." - the demolition derby of robots scene - very BRC.

As well as the dance scene of Zion in "the Matrix: Reloaded"

I have been pushing "Wicker Man" down everybodys throat for about ayear on e-playa.I love Larry as Lord Sumerisle...

"A boy and his Dog". It's a post apocalyptic movie starring Don Johnson from years ago. Lots of desert stuff, and a large amount of innocense amisdt a really screwy backdrop.

'Holes" is a great flick, too. Looks like it was filmed on the playa, or somewhere nearby. Don't let the 'kid's movie' look of it fool you, it's really cool.

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Not as much for the movie itself but the way people watch it in a theater. No one is a spectator you yell at the screen and interact with the other people there dess up and act out the movie. If you just watch the movie its no fun. Jut like burning man you get out what you put in. Plus a lot of the costumes could have come right off the playa.

"Phantom Tollbooth" - time is a gift given to you given to you to have the time to take the time to have the time of your life.

"The Muppet Movie" The lovely tale of an earnest young frog who knows there's something more out there than the tiny swamp he grew up in, and finds a host of crazy characters that become his family on the way. Extra points for featuring the first muppet art car, an evil fast food chain, Animal dosing himself to gigantism, and Crazy Harry blowing stuff up because it's fun. Plus, all the Muppets look like Burners I know.

"Mystery Men"! A whole lot of the basis of my camp is stolen directly from it. And it's hilarious.
Yeah, Holes. I kept thinking that the surrounding mountains looked familiar...wishful thinking.
Definitely the Matrix dance scene, and the costuming.
You're not going to leave out the Elven folk of Lord of the Rings, are you?
The director's cut of Blade Runner.
(The Great) Buckaroo Banzai!
David Cronnenberg Anything- for that altered sense.
I saw some of the costumes created for David Lynch's Dune, when the film first came out, and they were SO detailed...very playa.
The Road Warrior, of course.
*The book by Jeff Noon- VURT- there are even two characters whose long dreads are intertwined.
A few weeks ago I saw a short animated film called "Destino." It was originally a collaboration between Salvador Dali and Walt Disney (1946) but never finished. It was recently completed by some Disney animators.

(Here's some info about it: www.wired.com/news/digiwo...385,00.html)

The film follows a figure of a woman in a desert landscape. I thought it was amazingly evocative of Burning Man. It's been playing as a short subject with a full-length animated movie called "The Triplets of Belleville."
"Bad day at Black Rock" I know its a contradiction in terms but when you have lines in a movie like "Black Rock is the frendliest town in the west" its a classic.

"TRON" Actually I never liked this movie until I watched at the Bijou Theater in '99. Now it makes me completely homesick.
The Bijou..... THAT was US.... did ya make it for Porn Night?

we had SRO every night.... and especially on porn night... LOL!! have to laugh thinkin about when the "cops" came by, told us that porn was illegal, we told them so is nudity, They left and didnt bother us after that...

one of the movies we showed that night was too "artsy-fartsy for some... so some of our Tribesters put on a live show.... we ended up shutting off movie in favor of the live action.....

yummy memories... we even made popcorn, and I still have my Bijou Vest that we wore to seat people......

Ya made me feel nostalgic, now I'll have to go find the pics of the place and upload them to my profile....

when we were setting up that structure we nearly blew away to Winnemucca... 85 mph wind hit... took EVERYONE in vicinity to hold that thing in place.....

Thanks Rev.... ya brought back some really nice memories...
Movies That Remind Me of Burning Man from the 1970s
Vanishing Point (not the made-for-TV remake)

Art film and road movie collide for Vanishing Point , an existential car chase across the desert in a post Easy Rider America. Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, a taciturn driver who bets that he can drive a new Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours. He loads up on amphetamines and begins his odyssey through the contemporary west while a funky black DJ (Cleavon Little) turns the driver into a folk hero and broadcasts advice on dodging the cops.

Zabriskie Point

Antonioni's Zabriskie Point starred Mark Frechette and Daria Halprin, but the real star of Zabriskie Point is the desolate, parched-white landscape of Death Valley, in particular the vista from Zabriskie Point, the desert lookout that gives the movie its name and where the two main characters consummate their brief relationship in a hallucinatory sex scene. It is an eerie, skeletal expanse of stony ridges and dry stream beds, stunning in its ancient, unearthly emptiness.
Just was watching "The Big Lebowski" the other night with friends as a drinking game (can you guess how many times they say f*** or some version thereof over the course of those 98 minutes?), and when it came to the scene of revelry at Jackie Treehorn's (the porn king) place my friends asked me (as the only Burner there), "is that what Burning Man is like?" And i had to admit... "yeah... there are times like that..."
A lot of the car commercials on TV. They love to show them new cars zip zip accross the playa. I buy a new car every time I see an ad shot in the desert. Can't help myself.

There's that old rad odd movie that very much remided me of Burning Man. What was the name? Ya, add that one to the list also.
I saw a really bad movie from 1987 that had portions filmed out on the playa. It was called "Promised Land" and stars Meg Ryan, Kiefer Sutherland. It was truelly terrible until I realized "Hey! That's the playa!" and then I got all nostalgic and happy for a good 5-10 minuts of the film.
The 10 Commandments, just for the scene where Moses is walking thru the desert in a sandstorm, and This Quiet Earth, because so few people are left, they have to band together for to survival and love, have to learn how to hook up generators and stuff, and realize they can wear pretty much whatever they want now, and oh- the scene where the guy who thinks he's all alone has set up cardboard people as his own private audience, and he gives speeches with a microphone and speakers, complete with canned applause.
That movie was a real favorite of mine long ago. In fact, friends came to me in the early 90's and told me about Burning Man simply because I raved about the movie so much. Sure, it's a bit dark - I don't actually support burning police officers inside the Man... but, hey it's art, right?
Burning Man has this cool system of making Burning Man films available to local communities - I think it's called Burning Man in a box. They'll send your region whichever films you like, you hold a film festival. they've been doing it in SF and Santa Cruz for years. We did it in Portland last year. I've been collecting playa films for a while now. It's nice to have that reminder, on film, of what's out there.
i cant believe that no one has mentioned the 80's new wave classic "liquid sky": sexy, androgynous, brightly colored, new wave punks partying like rock stars until they are killed by having sex with teensyweensy aliens who want their sex fluids.
pretty much sums up last year, for me anyway.

also german expressionist classic "the cabinet of dr. caligari", as well as the 80's new wave update "dr.caligari." the former has an aesthetic surrealism and style that is reminiscent of several camps/neighborhoods. the latter was directed by new wave porn auteur Rinse Dream (of "Cafe Flesh" fame), and blends visual sophistication with absurdist theatre and kinky sex. hard to find, yet VERY reminiscent of burning man.

while i am at it, i'll go ahead and plug "cafe flesh", while "dr caligari" is not a porn, "cafe flesh" is. (perhaps one of the coolest, definitely one of the strangest. )set in the future where only like 1 percent of the population can have sex, the ruling class puts the capable 1 percent on display like sexual gladiators, for their enjoyment or arousal. anyoned who has walked into the wrong dome at the right time, or witnessed the "canadian beaver eating contest" - may very well appreciate how this film incorporates graphic sex with a sci-fi neon 1980's flair.

Was delicious. Watched it with Carter. One dream after another. Lots of dust, snow, blizzards, and mind-fucking. In Japanese. Beautiful scenery.

Carter: dreams... ha ha ha ha... highlight: colors

random scenes, felt like it was actual dream sequences yet caught up in side thoughts where we had to rewind to catch up with what the director/author was trying to show us.

Also gave me an idea for a screenplay. Why not, create a screenplay. Characters, plot - my screen play would be sci-fi, but basically, it's everyone giving up what they're doing now and putting all hands towards repairing the Earth. Like the short story from Adbusters Evacuees - we all leave 10% at a time and then the 10% which is left gets to repair the Earth. then some of the early evacuees, come back... years later. there's not a cig anywhere, nor power plants.

I don't have the title of the story right, but it's the basis for the screen play. As is my belief that everyone on the planet should be working on the repair of our home. Starting now. I need gaffers!

not an easy subject for real. decided to make a movie about BM... for reasons i don't remember anymore now. the best reason was that i was not satisfied about any movies i've seen. nothing really in depth. usually the movies just shows what's happening at BM and it's missing :
- either real good playa stories that have happened over the years. brian doherty's book ( http://www.thisisburningman.com/ ) definetely has good stories, the epic stories, but noone has been working on a film project for 9 years like he did... or maybe someone, maybe harrold blank?? ( http://www.harrodblank.com/film/main.html ) at least nothing that has come out yet.
- either the movies (that i've seen) are only superficially showing what an event like burning man is and takes to organize....

whatever you experience out there on the playa, or outside of it in relation with burning man might just not be good film material. when making a film, you must be thinking film and then burning man. if you're trying to make a movie about burning man, remember that it's just a film.. it's just images watched by people sitting in regular clothes waiting for certain emotions. plus how could you translate in film the experience you've had at burning man, freaking definetely not by showing how much it takes to organize the event, a movie is a mean to transfer emotions through moving images associated with sound. probably showing one angle through a very limited number of characters is the way most documentaries have been successful. a lot of the documentaries i've seen interview 15 strangers they've met for the first time on the playa, and spend 15 minutes with each of them, what's gonna come out of that? nothing but the basic "it's so great" "most amazing experience i've ever had" "changed my life"... who cares about those comments, no one gets convinced by such comments unless they come after an hour and a half of a successful documentary.

another major aspect that's been missing in the movies i've seen is a critical look at the event. even though the filmmaker might think that this event has changed his life or changed the life of the people he's talked to, he can't just stop there. who is the person who's going there? what cultural background was burning man born in? is it a significant social movement or just the best party around? how did the art become associated with a popular movement like burning man, was it a natural occurence or was it forced upon the participants? what are the interests of the organizers, and what's their leit-motiv? are the organisers just employees doing their job, or real community leaders trying to make a difference? if burning man is simply just nothing else that another event, what differentiates it with other events? haven't the previous movies, newspapers' writing been biased, blind, haven't they forgotten once again than the event is mostly american (5% of the planet...) or are we really looking at a first world unite? aren't the participants exaggerating the importance of the event because they're in the middle of it? isn't it a very exclusive community, even though it claims to be so inclusive? why is there so many people trying to define the event in so many different ways when it might just be an event.. the spiritual experience, the community experience, the fire transformation, the gifting economy, are these just extrapolations, or true cultural movements?

i haven't seen any one of those questions been even asked.

in the middle of that, i'm still kind of lost, if anyone of you know of some good essays or writings, please let me know.
