I'm about to upgrade to a new GPS - I have an iQue 3600 for the car but it's not robust enough for outdoor use.
I'm looking for something that can download maps (like the playa maps), has good battery life, is not too heavy. I don't need routing or the like because the 3600 does that. It needs to be robust enough to survive ranger duty on the playa and in a perfect world the occasional salt water spray while I'm sailing.
Any suggestions as to which models are a good buy and or which to avoid?

Re: Choosing a GPS
Fri, September 16, 2005 - 4:01 PMGarmin Legend is a nice model.... probably the best considering it's not too expensive, and it has a lot of features. Make sure you get a data cable. -

Re: Choosing a GPS
Sun, September 18, 2005 - 6:59 PMThey also make a 12Vdc / data combo adaptor for those models with the 12V adaptor plugged in it will run without the batteries so you can charge them while still operating (if you don't want to lose track data while moving)
It has a nautical mode and chart set and it really is water proof.
Has a nice man overboard waypoint marking feature.
Sadly the only feature it dosn't have is an audible anchor alarm, You have to go up the price range to get that.
I was very impressed with the playa proofness of mine.
