I believe that even though there are potential problems with giving out a high quality map ahead of time (camps placing themselves, etc), the potential for the community to create high quality maps of the playa far outweighs those problems.

A good way to prevent camps from placing themselves would be to threaten eviction if a camp does not go through their placement person.

I'm with you on that one Nym.
Knowing who you neibours are and what shape your plot is which, direction you are in relation to the Sun all that goes a long way towards planning a good Village / camp.
Hell I would go so far as to say cut and paste peoples (to scale) camp drawings in just for the fun of it.
Might even encourage people to communicate with there neibors pre burn to work out stuff like grey water ponds paths parking et al, good excuse to get to know your neibors and resolve thorns pre burn

        Two thoughts:

        1) Pre-Event Co-ordination... Our camp (Canadian Crazy Cozmic Cats (C4) at 4:30&Bipolar) is trying to coordinate stuff with our neighbours (BRC Animal Control) (gen set placement for one).... I think it would be GREAT if we could have detailed placement maps available to all pre-event. Then we could co-ordinate all around... sigh.

        2) On sticking to your placement. This year will witness the greatest land rush since, well in a long time.... many of the camps that were placed further out on radial spikes will be moving closer to center camp, but abandoning their placements and going for it... Know of many planing to do this. (Yes, I have a map in my inbox sent to another camp's members telling them where to look (ie where they will be staking out in the order of priority...). Sad, but you can't FORCE people to stick to a location, you can only use the ability to give out the prime locations to camps... if a group of people decide their location sucks... well, they will leave it for (to them) better non-staked land.

Basic economics... BMORG will probably not try to put people as far away from centre again. We shall see... Would be an interesting experiment to see which camps move

Interesting... maybe next year they'll do registered non-theme camps ;)

Whatever the outcome, I think it's in a camps interest to stick with their placement lest it backfire on them next year. That being said, my village, the BRANE isn't in a horrible location, just not as favorable as I'd like considering the space available.

As I see it, I want as much traffic as possible. Will people really come deeper into the city with the new layout?

I love the new layout. Change is good.

Any camp abandoning their spot shouldn't get placed the next year.

The BMORG could make it easier on everyone if they let us peek at the actual map of BRC. I know the BBC is on Bipolar and 4.30, but which corner and in which direction? When we get there I may well have to totally rearrange our layout.

I certainly sympathize with the desire to see the layout of the theme camps beforehand. However, the decision not do to that comes from the highest level (the LLC) and they have their reasons and make their judgement calls about all the tradeoffs between various options. It's easier for us to second guess that (from the fragment of the elephant within our reach) than to actually be the person making the right judgement call. So we all cooperate and still have fun!

Be assured that if the appropriate folks decide it's ok to release more info earlier, the techies will be happy to do so.

As theme camps check in, we can place them on the map (with some delays). Come around tuesday evening before the burn, we can show about everything - come by Playa Info!

Lisa seemed to take it down from her own webpage once it became common knowledge that it was up. I assume it's because it's a work in progress, or they want it to be more of a surprise for people arriving onto the playa.

It is beautiful though. You can get 20x30 prints via costco.com for $10 (plus S&H) if you want a poster NOW

    ;)

P.S. -- I have a MS Access database with all of the so-far released camp location data. If anyone wants it let me know.

So when a theme camp jumps away from their assigned placement does the BMorg do an LNT inspection in both locations?
      They should.
Speaking of Playa Info and camp locations, do you guys go out and eyeball where camps really are?

Let me just say that theme camp mappers (I'm one) should contact their placer. He or she will be able to give you more information about your specific placement and who your immediate neighbors are.
