Hi all,

I have updated my map for Garmin brand GPSes with 2007 data, and it is available at: http://www.wkeller.net/BRC-GPS/ .

Also, for the first time I took a stab at creating tracks of the city streets in GPX format, this may be useful to those with other brands of GPS.

As always, use at your own risk.

This map is made by taking the excel spreadsheet for each theme camp, and then fudging the addresses so that each camp name is (more or less) readable.

This means that every single camp could be in the wrong location (except for the plazas), and yet is still within a block of being in the right place - I have no way of knowing if I fudged the address _towards_ or _away_ from their real location.

Currently sorted: 2:00 to 5:00.

Hey all,

I'm looking for information about people mapping Black Rock City this year. I know some of you are out there, using maps in art projects, making maps, or just geowanking like me.

Let me know, I'm putting together a site about mapping and using GPS units on the playa!

Thanks,

Choosing a GPS

I'm about to upgrade to a new GPS - I have an iQue 3600 for the car but it's not robust enough for outdoor use.

I'm looking for something that can download maps (like the playa maps), has good battery life, is not too heavy. I don't need routing or the like because the 3600 does that. It needs to be robust enough to survive ranger duty on the playa and in a perfect world the occasional salt water spray while I'm sailing.

Any suggestions as to which models are a good buy and or which to avoid?

Loading IMG files into Garmin Mapsource?

Seems like i've done this in the past. Now I'm running the current version of Mapsource (6.8.0) and it refuses to recognize IMG files.

Do any of you Geowankers know what happened and how to get around this?

I'm looking for people's maps and/or GPS data from Burning Man this year. Please let the group know what you made or collected.

This year's Garmin GPS map was phenominal.... absolutely stunning.

Community Mapping will flourish if there is soil to grow in, otherwise we have to make the soil ourselves, which makes artistic expression much more of a hassle and challenge, especially in a temporary setting such as Burning Man.

What are the reasons for keeping mapping data private, even on a timerelease?

Even with a timerelease, can real GIS data be released?

More GPS Maps available

http://brcmap.home.comcast.net

now has 2005 maps for the GPS, in both Garmin internal map format, and the more universal but limited "trackmap" format (composed of tracks and waypoints).

2005 Art Installation data isn't released yet, but there is bogys (actually 2004) data there to play with and get familiar with, so you can quickly make use of the real data when it's available.

Please begin using this before you get to the playa - let us know what works and doesn't, give us ideas and suggestions, create derivative stuff, have fun!

Also - we plan to have a "GPS filling station" at Playa Info this year, with this data and more - with updates as we release or discover more info. Come by with your cable to get data - or perhaps volunteer to help! It would great to have some experienced GPS users around to answer questions and help participants make use of the info.

PlayaInfo supporting GPSD

I've just gotten some word that playainfo is supporting GPSD for this year, or something really similar. I'm actually making an assumption there because I know they're supporting GPSDrive, which relies on GPSD.

It seems to me the BRC map for 2005 must exist somewhere with lat. and lon. numbers inked in all over it . DPW the artery and lots of others all need that data.
so why isn't it published? or is it? anyone in the know?

I've sucked the city map image into OziExplorer and am just die'n to callibrate the map and start stamping waypoint marks all over it.

The API has been released. While we can't really use this onplaya, the offplaya possibilities are really grand.

If you have GPX files from Burning Man, load them up using this free web service:

http://www.tom-carden.co.uk/googlegpx/

You can check out my waypoints using my file at:
http://hardsun.net/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/file/trunk/geoapp/brc2.gpx?rev=3&format=raw

Just go to Gerlach, NV to see the important waypoints.
