Burning Blast from the Past

In a pile of old files semi-discarded by my son, I found (and, as a history major, really enjoyed) a three page (double-sided) brochure entitled: "Building Burning Man, The Journal of the Burning Man Project, Summer 1996" One article discussed "Black Rock City Confronts Growth Issues," mentioning that 4,000 attended in 1995.

The brochure emphasizes garbage (including dog poop) to be snagged and bagged. "M.o.o.p." is not mentioned, so perhaps the acronym had not entered common usage.

It proposes for the first time that cars be parked all week (except for "trips to the surrounding mountains"). It continues to request that "firearms be kept unloaded in our camp" and that Burning Man would sponsor no shooting events in 1996.
