Pluto's house position, and life changes

We all know that Pluto moves slowly. So slowly, in fact, that no one lives to see their Pluto return because it takes almost a quarter century for one Pluto cycle.

But most people do live long enough to experience several Pluto transits in their lifetime, over planets, or at least in square and/or opposition to some planets. These are always significant, although not always painful.

What I haven't seen written about is the natal house position of Pluto, and how it relates to the traumatic changes a person will go through, when Pluto reaches an angle in the natal chart. It is my experience that some of the most drastic, and often painful, experiences occur when Pluto begins to shift from one quadrant to another. And the age of the person at the quadrant shift is very important.

First, some background. Pluto takes anywhere from about 12 years (while in Scorpio) to about 30 years (while in Taurus) to go through one sign. For the sake of this discussion, let's assume Pluto is in one of the quicker signs, like Scorpio.

If natal Pluto is in an anglular house (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th), then of course Pluto is very strong in the person's chart. It's influence is omnipresent in their life, always in some way coloring the way they deal with life. The particular angle shows the area of life Pluto is most dominant in, but for this discussion that is not important. What is important is that for a person born with Pluto angular, it will be many years before Pluto changes quadrants....they will be in at their thirties at the very least. The crossing of the angle may be painful, but the person will be a mature adult at the very least, and (having a lifetime with Pluto angular), will usually have a lot of internal strength to see them through the transition.

If natal Pluto is in a succeedent house (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th), then Plutonian energy is something they draw upon, a resource of some kind. For some of them, there is an ongoing issue with power and control, but it is not as conscious, not as omnipresent, as the angular Pluto person experiences. When Pluto reaches one of the angles, the power and control issues become very important, and there can be some major trauma. This person is younger than the angular Pluto person when this occurs....sometimes late teens, or in their twenties.
At this age, the person is not usually thinking much about their mortality, and the pain when they come face to face with it, or when they have to deal with something of major importance to them that dies or is at least transformed, can be a real shock to the system. They are rarely as ready to deal with such a change as the angular Pluto people are.

But if natal Pluto is in a cadent house (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th), Plutonian energy is usually very much a background thing. They are not conscious of it at all on a daily basis, although it does subtly shape their thinking all the time. These people, though, are quite young when
Pluto crosses an angle, sometimes as young as a little child, sometimes an adolescent or teenager. These people are already going through major changes related to growing, and growing up, and the Plutonian energies can up the angst factor dramatically. Take for example a person with Pluto in the 6th who reaches puberty around the same time Pluto crosses his or her Descendant. While puberty is a kind of hell on earth for most young people, for this Plutonian person, there is the added complication of having to totally change their self-image, as well as how they view other people, just to get through this. I've known kids who were constantly at the mercy of school bullies at this time, to the point where they were terrified to go to school. In any event, Pluto's influence will be forever stamped upon this person as part of the growing up process, and often they will carry a trauma from this period with them for many, many years.

Pluto is a extremely powerful influtence in the chart. As you stated with the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th house that Plutos influcence can be experienced by others more dramatically also, these are aggresive houses, with aggressive signs. It kind of projects outwardly. Even thou the 5th with Leo is how one projects, its based on tthe collection that has happened in the 4th. Cardinal houses also have a strong effect on the present with transits. I have often met those who are really questioning events and things or just plain confuse when Pluto transit Mutable houses too like the 3rd and 9th. And are for a lost at what to do if its in the 12 or 6th house. I like Pluto in the 6th in a natal chart, these people always bounce back. I get dark about Pluto in the 12th thou. I often feel they have some sort of Radar and are keying into your head.
But I really enjoy those with Pluto in the fixed houses, ---They is always something to improve---. They continually contradict the house mentioned but is a fix sign anyway. Pluto is a fix sign. What what gets fixed, or fixated.
I think thats the key to pluto, it shit distrubs so much that the energy causes you to redirect what ever needs redirecting, You never really go off course, because these little happening seem to put you right on course again, its just your totally unaware of whats happening. I think pluto is saying , "The hell with the past", It was a new day yesterday but an old day now.

that is quite accurate. have to say that as a 3rd house pluto, the energies are always a background thing. but i do feel it very strongly. i have a 3house pluto in libra trining my sunand sextile ac. it was remarked that perhaps having pluto there creates catalystic relationships, since there is a need to dig in this case and libra is about relationships. but i was certainly very angry. haha. and yes, the pluto transit traumatised me though i will only allow that to be the first and last time!

      hey, jacqueline,

I've got a very similar situation with Pluto. It trines my Sun and Venus, which are conjunct, sextiles my Rising and, in addition, quincunxes my Midheaven.
And my Scorpio Pluto is in the 3rd house, also.

Actually, I've just recently been trying to make the connection between some bad events that have happened to me in the first years of my adolescence and my Pluto transits.

I'm still having problems understanding the transits, though. If my 4th house starts at 17 degree Sagittarius and ends in 22 degrees of Capricorn, does it mean that Pluto's now transiting my 4th?
That's the idea I got from this site I checked out once.

    thanks zane for this post

lately, my tribe postings have taken a back seat to other issues I must take care of soon, but wanted to say,

I have natal Pluto in the 4th, and it is currently transiting my 6th (and getting close to the 7th cusp). I have challenging Pluto transits coming up as well along with the 'midlife' transits. Not an easy time from the sounds of it, but I thank astrology for at least giving me the heads up, rather than be blindsided with hard transits

Hi, Pluto right now is quite big(for me) or should I say underlying, yet is fading into the distance somewhat. At the moment pluto is squaring my Asc and sun, which has been going for a couple of years. Plutos transiting my 3rd and has been playing with my IC this year, next year to enter the 4th permanetly. Natally pluto it is in my 1st house conjoining Saturn in scorpio. In my progressed chart it is now in my 12 house after conjoining my asc for some years, with my new asc in scorpio. Pluto is opposing mars in my progressed with saturn, so far Iv been bitten by a few snakes but plutos all about dying and rising from the ashes, I guess Im just experiencing the most potent healing Venom/medicine out there, snake medicine, and as I age the strength I get from this will help my gentle piscean virgoan self to survive(through trials in life/death). My pluto is very linked in with my saturn due to the conjunction, and funny that the due date my saturn return is direct is on October 31, 2012, seems quite scorpionic/ saturnian date. When Plutos movment into capricorn in 08, happens I feel somehow linked to it.

I have pluto at 25Sag18 transiting my first house ascendant 9Sag15 opposing my 7th house sun in Gemini at 29Gem10 and my part of fortune at 28Gem59. I also have transiting Uranus in my third house opposing my 10th house natal Pluto in Virgo 24Virgo45 that is conjunct my mc 23Virgo51. I am losing my mind, and from what I understand next year is going to be beyond insane. If anyone has experienced this please offer your insite. Born Raleigh, NC 6:57pm on June 20, 1970

My natal Pluto is at the end of my 7th House. I am not sure about how my natal placement of Pluto affects my every day life. I will have to read a little more about Pluto before I can comment about that one.
I did, however, look back at my chart and the times when pluto changed from one house to the next and there were definately some life-changing experiences. The 1st one, I was a toddler, so I can't remember much about it.

The second one was when I was 13. Pluto was in Scorpio, and went from my 8th house to my 9th house. My mother remarried, to someone I didn't get along with very well, and we moved from our childhood home in the city to a place out in the country. I was devestated and went through a very rebellious time with my Mom. Even though we are good now, some of those memories were some of the worst I ever experienced. However, one of the greatest things that came out of that move was I made some great friends who were like soul connections. I guess Pluto does have its way of bringing us "up from the ashes."

The next one, in 2002, the best friend that I made from the above mentioned transit moved away to Italy and our friendship dwindled. It seemed like many friendships started to suddenly disappear, now that I think about it. Again, Pluto made way for a great long-term relationship once he cleaned other things out. So, I guess he can be considered a wise owl, sort of?

thank you Zane for this post.
I've wondered how it operated, and you've shed insight into the process.

Pluto is in my 5th, and I do utilize it as a resource, the ability to withstand periods of absolute loss or a strange sort of deprivation, no support, the loss of a caretaker, someone close. At this point i'm use to it, i use it, in my work, to penetrate the placid surface of people and events. I automatically pull that energy within when i sense that something is about to happen.

    Thanks.

i was i could feel peaceful.

Pluto has been transiting my 3rd for years, been moving over my IC for the past year soon to conjoin with neptune and then my south node, Im sure pluto will be i the 4th transit for a long time, so it's quite a powerful house to be in?

        Hi Alchemy,
pluto has been transiting my 3rd as well for years and will be entering my 4th at 2 deg capricorn so it is conjunct my IC at the moment too. I suppose it'll bring to the forefront past issues, family stuff and domestic stuff. I have noticed that the way I communicate has changed for the better with pluto going through my third. I have been feeling the effect of it conjunct my IC already..

Can't remember exactly (I lost the book!) but I think Jeff Green wrote about this in his book about Pluto. It is comprehensive, and for the longest time, he was known as the "Pluto Expert." I will have to buy the book again, because it is excellent.

    Zane,
Question-succeedent house Pluto -what are your thoughts on Pluto being home in the 8th house which is succeedent .
There is a generation who have scorpio Pluto in the eighth as well -this certainly would hold special significance .
What have you seen here -I have a child with the scoprio Pluto in the eighth house and was curious as to your take on this .

Yes Pluto does move so slowly and for all of us with gemini planets, ouch, weep and let go...ashes to ashes.

I want to revive this post. I ran a astro.com "natal charts and transit now," chart and came up with this.

Pluto in saggitaius in my 9th oppositing natal mars/mercury in gem, in the 3rd,

but what also came up, this is a side bar was A kite configuration involving natal pluto conjunct saturn in leo, sextile natal neptune conjunct saturn in libra on the DC, trine transiting neptune in aquarius in my 11th , opposing saturn conjunct natal pluto in leo in the 5th, which sextriles natal mercury conjunct mars in gemini in the 3rd, bringing in the transiting pluto in sagittruis in the 9th.

lots of peoplpe, millions of people are experiencing the neptune in aquarius opposion to saturn leo, but how it this affecting those of us born with pluto in leo,
what's the deal here? a major life altering transformation from self pursuit to neptune to spiritual awareness.

anyway, i though it was interesting to see how it's working in my chart and then curious how it works collectively and individually with everyone experiencing these transits.

    ok. thanks.

I have pluto in scorpio in the 5th house. People *aaalways think* I can't do [insert whatever it is here] and I allways prove them wrong. Seems like my life has been a flow of constant opposition from superiors beliving I cant do it (whateverit is) and I've proved them wrong every time. Why is this? Is this pluto related?

I definitely think its a Pluto thing. I might not be that those people necessarily think YOU can't do something or can't be something but just that that thing can't be done. Pluto gives a lot of power to the native and ability to transform. Because you are have a higher awareness possibilities, because your limits are set higher, you are probably going to think these people who don't think you personally can't do something. That could be, they could fear or be jealous of your power. Or it could be that they are just have a simpler idea of what is possible or not.

I think the whole Pluto thing is very secretive and one almost takes joy in the type of opposition you described because they are aware of something others are not.

I have natal Pluto conjunct the ascendant. Whew, looking at my transits for the 2 year period around the time that Pluto transited my Nadir (roughly Scorpio 20-27).During that time Pluto conjuncted my Scorpio Saturn and moon, as well as the nadir. During those transits I was wrongfully terminated from my job for political reasons (protesting Gulf war 1),I entered into a 9 year relationship with a man I was not in love with that required I leave my prior life behind (which, incredibly, I did), my father killed himself, and I entered graduate school.

Perhaps I will live long enough to see the opposition from the descendant! Don't laugh. My 91 year old grandmother, with Pluto rising at 1 Cancer, will most likely see this transit, which is cool...

My transit pluto has been in my 2nd house for several years now,and will be for awhile. All I can say is,it's been only recently that I'm finially 'getting it'.Not only in terms of my attitudes towards money and learning for once to stay in a budget, but also in terms of relationships and how I've felt about myself lately. Now transit pluto is squaring my natal sun and mercury, and it's not surprizing that out of the blue I've finially had the guts to end my marrige, call it quits and move on.Before this the thought of making it final,I simply couldn't do it,face up to it.Never in fact believed I could go through with it.It's even weirder that it took a death in the family to hit me hard enough to say to myself "do I want this to drag on any longer out of fear of making a move,or do I just want to bite the bullet and go for it?".It's lately been an emotional rollercoaster and deep down for some reason, this time just feels like it's the right time.Everything just lined up right, where a few years back everything just kept going wrong.Rambled on long enough, but I feel better about myself now than I have in quite awhile even though going through this loss is painful as hell.I just downright feel different about things than I usually had.

        Hello Bambi,

Funny thing, I think having the Pluto rising has softened the blow of all the Pluto transits I've experienced so far (Pluto squaring Sun right now). Pluto has conjuncted all of my planets- except for Uranus-in my lifetime; many of these happened as a child and teen. I had a gun put in my face when Pluto conjuncted my natal Mars as a teen. I laugh that you haven't met a Pluto rising yet. I have several in my family. The most recent is my brother's 3 year old. Every one of my blood relatives is a Plutonian (and almost all of their mates as well). Everyone has hard Pluto/Moon or Sun aspects or both and many have Pluto on the angles.Makes for lively Thanksgivings... ; )

Uranus is the one that has kicked my ass, pound for pound.

Ah, Ezili ... interesting that your Pluto placement seems to have prepared you for these Pluto transits. It's also interesting that sometimes certain aspects, signs, etc. will run in families! I was born at a Pluto station, with hard and happy aspects. Nothing seems to prepare me for hard Pluto aspects. Uranus, I can handle ... Neptune brings me to my knees.

Kinda like we're in a circle and each get a different experience or view of what's coming down in the middle and around us.

Yes, this just happened to me in November. My descendant is 25 Sagittarius. I know the 7th house deals with open enemies, and I'm in a political battle in my hometown with a rival of eight years. Though I'm not running myself, I'm supporting the candidate challenging my rival, who is the incumbent mayor, and things have gotten very nasty.

my solarfire program doesn't give much for pluto trans 7th:

"Your most intimate relationship undergoes upheaval during this period. Your relationship with your partner is undergoing a transformation which is forcing you to change your outlook on your personal relationships. Now you are being forced to face your relationship with complete honesty. It is important that you face your loved one, and any business partnerships, with integrity."

Natal: There was some discussion above of Pluto conjuncting the asc---I have it in Leo, trining a ninth house Aries Mars. It took me a long time to harness that energy for constructive purposes. EGO is the big drag with Leo, and boosted by Pluto it can be overbearing..sometimes intimidates people. But it's helped me survive, transform and transmute, healing myself and others.

Transit Action: Right now trans Pluto is sitting on my Vertex, in the 5th house at 28 Sag. In a few months it will hit 0 Cap in the 5th house, forming an exact square with my 9th house natal Aries sun. It will also form a trine with natal venus, at 0 Taurus/Midheaven. That's gonna be a real jackpot.

my natal chart has pluto in the 12th house. the first 3 yrs of my life it was approaching my asc, then going over it, retrograding & going direct a couple of times. I was born a few weeks early & I had a lot of health complications & was in & out of the hospital for about the first 3 yrs. the other thing i discovered by looking up my pluto's early transits is that pluto was just starting to conjunct my 1st house uranus which is also square my sun/mercury/jupiter conjunction when my parents separated. & when transiting pluto finally left my natal uranus my parents finalized their divorced. My parents had a horrible divorce that completely transformed my life. The divorce took around 3yrs to finalize. our house burnt down during that time & nothing was salvaged from the fire. luckily no one was hurt. my life was changed from living in princeton to living in an inner city (trenton) on a single mom's income.

Hi, Zane wonderful post. Actually, now pluto is in my fifth house and has is I guess at a seperating conjunction aspect to my juno and also it hit my south node....North node is in gemini. I am not quite getting how this is playing out for me as an opposition to my north node. Because Jupiter is also hitting my sun now in sag at 15 d and is approaching a conjunction to my fifth house. Artistically, I definetely have matured more and it seems that since pluto has come into my fifth house that I have had to do much more deep reaching and mastering of my words or the way I put them together for music. Also, last year I did finally get to do a couple of my own events and one of them ended up for charity (saturn in aquarius/saturn progressing in pisces)....Also, my progressed sun is at 29 d cap and moving into aqu. anyway
    it is interesting....

I definetely agree here, when pluto was going conjuncting my fourth house and going through it was dealing with so many control issues from other people, well I should say that those issues were the balance between me and other people in my life, and I would have to go back and look, but I made a break with those issues with those particular people when it must have been coming into my fifth house, now pluto is in my fifth house and I do not have these issues so strongly, but they are milder and much easier to deal with and I am learning how to draw my own boundaries....

I'm surprised i'm just finding this tribe and post. I never took into account the importance of Pluto's transit into a new angle/quadrant. Natal 4th Pluto. Present Pluto transit 6th for many years through Scorpio and Sagg(intercepted in 6th). I think next year i'll have my first glimpse of Pluto entering my 7th/DC 0degrees Cap.......Frightful to think I have more painful areas to look forward to. The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is when Pluto hits my 7th my relationship will go through many changes. Plus Pluto will be opposite my ASC(no ideas)...maybe change my appearnce by cutting my hair really short?
But, yes having a natal 4th pluto has never been an easy thing in many ways, yet this will be so new and the one thing that's always been so dificult ,relationships!

        Any thoughts?

          Zane,

This is quite interesting. I have been told I have a strong Pluto presence in my chart (Cancer ASC w/Moon, Pluto in 4th) and looking back, I can see how Pluto "had it's way" with me through houses 5 and 6. Now, Pluto is transiting House 7 in Cap and, despite the fact that the DC is not at 0 Cap, I am already feeling Pluto's presence. I agree, Notme, when you lament on painful times to come. I think Pluto is all about tough love, kinda like when some people potty train their dogs by shoving their faces in their accidents to teach them. All this will be during my Saturn Return, no doubt! Oy vey!

I am one of those who has natal Pluto in 6th. I didn't experience the transit on my 7th at puberty..actually it happened a month before my first birthday. Haha. But by the time of puberty (age 13), Pluto was firmly in my 8th house. Fun times. :-))
