Art Clay vs. PMC.. same thing?

Hello...
I'm joining in with "newbie" questions...

I actually became interested in the concept of silver clay after accidently stumbling onto a book at the library. It's called "Art Clay, Silver & Gold" (18 unique pieces to make in a day), by Jackie Truty.

You can buy this book new at Barnes & Nobel (et al), or used on half.com for as little as $10.

Oh, yes; my questions:

1. Is "ART CLAY" and "PMC" the same thing, just different brands?

2. In your experience, do you have the most success with kiln firing vs. torching?

Thanks!

    Hi ya,

I've tried both, two different brands of basically the same thing. Each type of pmc or art clay handle differently and fire at different temperatures. I recommend trying them all and see what you like. The different shrinkage rates can be handy for many techniques and the different temps can be handy if you intend to fire stones in place.

I use PMC mostly because that's what I started with and am certified in. Both brands have many handy products. Art Clay has two that I like a lot, Slow Dry and Oil Paste.

    peace,

Forgot to address your question about kiln vs. tourch firing.

Depends on the piece. If it's a piece with no stones or synthetic corundum or cz and if the piece has no findings you can tourch fire if it's pmc 3. I use a kiln except for small stoneless components with no findings or for Aurora 22. So I guess the answer is it depends on what you're going to be making.
