I found a book: "Introduction to Precious Metal Clay" at my thrift store for $1.50. I've been curious but the books are always so expensive, so I bought it and I've been reading through it.
I take it from the extreme temperatures required for even the low-firing clays, that using your standard oven will not work.
I really don't have money for a kiln, as that would run several hundred dollars. I did read that some of the newer polymers will work with a butane torch. But what side-effects come from running a butane torch for 10-30 minutes straight?
Does anyone else have experience with this media? Is it worth the cost? Have you made back the money you put out selling your pieces, or do you just make for your own enjoyment?
Which type of clay do you prefer and why?

Re: Considering PCM
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 11:32 AMMy sister and I just took a PMC class where the instructor had a kiln and did the firing.. She said that some places that sell the clay will fire it in a kiln for a small fee. I haven't looked into that where I am, but you could check in your area. -

Wed, August 23, 2006 - 12:36 PMMy area generally sucks in all such regards. I'm figuring I'm going to have to -if/when I decide to - get all my supplies off the internet.

Re: Considering PCM
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 1:13 PMI use PMC 3 and a hot pot, that runs on a fuel kind of like very hot sterno.
I like it a lot....put "hot pot" in a scearch engine and I am sure one will pop up. -

Wed, August 23, 2006 - 1:38 PMA good place to get your supplies is www.pmcsupply.com or www.pmc123.com
I messed up my entire last package of clay. I have a new package and I have been scared to death to even attempt. A little advice, let you item dry overnight before firing. Make sure you fire hot enough and long enough. And your dry piece is still fragile. If you drop it, it will shatter (it was devistating).
