Chestnut Grove

Start by hunting for a tree.
Chestnut trees move around
they sometimes hide behind other trees,
woods (as we know) roam in packs.

Find a clearing, some glade
where you can turn upon
a circle of the sun.

It is time to move
into the arboreal density
where only half-lit forms fit.

Work your way through
until you are woven more naturally
into the earth and sky.

Find that settled acre
where the trees are ankle deep
in spiked unexploded shells.

Gather up the green
broken cradles
peel them open with gloved hands
pushing the darkly polished suns-
the bronzed kernels
out into the light.

Gather them up
in brown satchels
then walk away
from the Chestnut grove

for you will never find it again
in any place
you have marked upon a map.
