First attempt, making poi.

topic posted Thu, December 13, 2007 - 7:00 PM by  Rex
After trying poi at Spherecamp West, I have decided to make the effort to learn more.
I have made a set for practice, and I would like some feedback to see if I am on the right track.

They are made from 7mm accessory cord, with a rubber ball for the core on the business end,
and a small marble core on the handle end.

I have some pics in my profile: This one is for some sense of proportion.

This one is just the poi.

Great job! They look fabulous. How do they spin?

I love the handles. That is a very practical solution to handles.

How is the weight? They look like they could be a little light. I find heavier poi easier to spin. My favorite poi for practicing with now are made with a light ball chain, which, I feel, distributes the weight of the poi all the way through the line (without stretching) so there's no chance the line will ever collapse in upon itself when the poi are above my head or during a stall.

Also, how is the rubber ball? Again, that sounds like a good idea. I'm sure it would still hurt like hell to rack yourself with but it seems comparable to a tennis ball.

Even though I use heavier poi to practice with, I also started out with poi that was pretty light. The inherent challenges will make you a better poi spinner in the end. When you're ready to start thinking about spinning fire poi (or if you want to build muscle), you may want to increase the weight but I think these are a fabulous and very innovative first pair. Make sure you hang onto them. No matter how many sets of poi you have in your life, your first pair will always have a very special place.

Thanks for the comments! I am more comfortable with these, than the loaners I used in the workshop (Zuni Poi Swings?).
I think they might be a bit light, if more weight would slow them down a touch, that would be cool. The rubber ball, is a really cheap "super ball".
They are dense enough, to sting nicely when they are spinning fast.
The only change I have in mind for this set, is to finish out the loose tail on the head end. I wish I had thought of heat-shrink tubing, before
finishing the handles. I will probably whip the ends to secure them.

I will probably make another set, with a slightly larger-heavier head. Also, maybe slightly longer.

Assuming that I can get solid with the basics, fire is a virtual certainty. :)

      Thanks again.

now when you go to fire you could make your own monkey fists since you already know the knot.. = ]

good job on those btw! i would just make sure they have the same amount of loops on each side.. = ]
