Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) called the newly-certified senator from Minnesota, Al Franken, a "clown" on Wednesday and said Franken's presence in the Senate -- which gives the Democrats a "super-majority" of 60 votes -- won't be enough to pass health care reform.
"I’ll tell you what a lot of people are thinking, and that is it looks like things are going to be over and we are going to get the clown from Minnesota,’’ the Tulsa World quoted Inhofe as saying. “They are not going to get more than 35 votes.’’
Challenged by a reporter to clarify that he had just referred to Franken as a clown, Inhofe responded that, yes, he had done that.
“I didn’t mean to be disrespectful. I don’t know the guy, but … for a living he is a clown,’’ said Inhofe. “That’s what he does for a living.’’
Inhofe was evidently referring to Franken's two-decade-long career as a comedy writer for Saturday Night Live, during which he sometimes appeared on camera as a performer.
In the 1990s, Franken began to shift his attention from comedy to politics, penning best-selling books such as Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, and Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations.
After an eight-month legal battle against incumbent Norm Coleman, Franken was certified the winner of Minnesota's 2008 senatorial race this week, with a vote margin of little more than 300 votes.
"How utterly disrepectful and shameful," Carl Bentham writes on his Talking Points memo blog. "Yes, Al Franken is a comedian and he has made a lot of stupid jokes. But he's also proven himself to be intelligent and knowledgeable about policy. To dismiss him as 'a clown' is an ugly ad-hominem attack, a distortion of his character, the sort of commentary one would expect from an pitiful schoolyard bully rather than a United States Senator."

Re: Inhofe calls Franken a clown, says super-majority not enough for health care bill
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 10:50 PMI agree with Inhofe in that they're probably not going to pass healthcare, even with the supermajority. Which is sad.

Fri, July 3, 2009 - 6:11 AMThat's mean. Now you're acting like Rush.
And yes healthcare will not be passed unless it benefits the insurance or medical industry and they find some way to squeeze more money for less healthcare out of the patient or the taxpayer. -

Re: Inhofe calls Franken a clown, says super-majority not enough for health care bill
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 12:46 PMThe way I read the most recent draft, the health care "reform" that congress is so diligently trying to pass will prop up the existing system by making it illegal for people not to buy health insurance. It will even fine them if they refuse to do so.
hosted.ap.org/dynamic/sto...ARE_OVERHAUL
In other words, our lawmakers are planning to make it unlawful not to participate in our criminal health care system.
This is the proposal that Obama is crowing over.

The only change this "reform" comprises is the chump change that will be left in our pockets after the crooks in the medical insurance racket get done robbing us. -

Re: Inhofe calls Franken a clown, says super-majority not enough for health care bill
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 10:10 PMNo matter where you turn in this capitalistic democracy you have someones hand in your pocket. And the Republicans are so good at talking about helping people keep their money. If it's not the banks, it's the health care industry, or the oil industry, or any number of corporate behemoths that the government supports with favored laws and tax breaks. It's no wonder that people have stopped looking for a job and the government can't balance it''s budget with tax revenue. That is the real tax revolt in progress. Not this tea bag shit, it's the people that dropped out and refust to have wages to pay any taxes.
The vast majority of US citizens want single payer health care. If they now have mandatory insurance shoved down their throats there will be even more people dropping out of the employment pool.
