Only?!

And why is Obama shying away from more open debates with McCain?
I thought that would be his strong suit?

Or *is* he shying away at all...i just heard a rumor so...

  • are you talking about the town hall meetings?
    • Kinda.

      Also, why so few debates?
And why does the debating process seem like a watered down infomercial?

      But yep:
      >>>John McCain has proposed to Barack Obama a series of ten "town hall meetings" that would be held at locations throughout the country. These meetings would be held before the party conventions in late August.[6] ABC News had proposed a town hall meeting in New York's Federal Hall, which was jointly rejected by both candidates for being moderated by the press and for being exclusive to ABC.[7]

Obama countered with an offer for two additional debates in addition to the CPD debates - an economic town hall Independence Day weekend and a foreign policy debate in August.[8] McCain rejected that offer, and the only debates currently scheduled are the CPD debates listed above.[9]<<<

      ...is part of it.

'By his own admission McCain isn't a great orator'......so, in addition to the issues mentioned at the beginning of this post, why isn't Obama pouncing on the opportunity to hand John McCain his own ass on national television?

<And why does the debating process seem like a watered down infomercial? >

        Because they are.
        • ok.
So, why is the debating process a watered down infomercial?
          What happened?
Or is it one of those slow, detailed degenerations that's too sad to even talk about?

And why won't Obama entertain any (more) good ones?

The issues that are important have been taken 'off the table' by the corporations that make money off those issues. On the other issues the moneyed interests have set the direction and leave it up the candidates to nuance their positions to both get to the same place. So when you can’t campaign on substance you have to campaign on style. Oh look a lapel pin.
            • I think you are just over analyzing, and hiding the obvious behind a patina of conspiracy. Simply put, people are stupid and respond better to "UG UG" language, then they would a 3 hour discussion on economics.

Hell, just look at the ratings for "American Idol". They've been in the number one spot for four years strait, and people actually pay to watch this tripe. All the while, they could be watching something educational on PBS, for free. Face it, we are still monkeys looking for a fuck, a fight, and some food

My thoughts on the subject is that he does not want to enter an arena where he might be asked a question that he hasn't had time to prepare for. Every time I've seen the man interviewed, where we was asked detailed questions about policy, he inevitably trips up, and continues to deliver the hope soda. He recently did an interview with the "News Hour" that left me with the same impression
    • But how often are candidates asked 'detailed questions about policy' anyway?

      i dunno.
He seems pretty confident and thoughtful to me.
I certainly favor him more 'live' than when reading his headlines.

Maybe that thoughtfulness is what you're refering to when you say that he 'inevitably trips up'...maybe he's just thinking about his response as oppossed to mechanically spitting out tickertape sound bites?

At his very worst I see him as a better candidate then McCain...and, I'll be honest, I do dare to believe in the American process of electing a president.

Call me naive but I think it can occasionally work and perhaps elect someone who's not a war-mongering bastard who plays half the country off the other half to acheive his ends into office.

Hope is not blind support but people are so pissed and jaded after the last 8 years that any 1/2 decent politician like Obama will be canonized... and then villified and then perhaps seen as being simply a 1/2 decent politician...which all we can hope for anyway.

i'm going to go masterbate on the flag now.

I always took it as an attempt to not state anything in a clear manner

I agree, but it isn't Obama. This election, Biden was your man
      • "But how often are candidates asked 'detailed questions about policy' anyway?"

They dont ask because people would never tune in. This is why the news is dominated by windbags like O'Reilly and Olbermann
