Now, let me tell you what has been going on. As 60 Minutes was putting its show together, the White House put pressure on CBS -- the parent company -- to kill the show. Over the last few days, as word got out that the 60 Minutes show would air tonight, Karl Rove's associates began planting defamatory stories about journalists working on this story (see example here) and attacking the whistle-blower who came forward, Dana Jill Simpson. If you recall, Ms. Simpson testified, under oath, to Congress about Karl Rove's involvement in politicizing the DOJ. What you may not know, however, is that her house mysteriously caught fire and she was run off the road in the weeks leading up to her testimony.
What you may also not know is that Governor Siegelman's house was broken into twice during his trial as was his attorney's office.
Yesterday, the attacks on Simpson and journalists increased with a series of emails from the Alabama GOP. See Here.
Tonight was something truly unseen in US history. During the 60 Minutes broadcast and ONLY during the Don Siegelman portion -- the screen went black for Huntsville residents and Mobile residents. There are other reports of other locations, but I have not yet confirmed those. In Florida, a series of strange ads were running about the FISA bill and how Democrats are not tough on terrorism, apparently during the 60 Minutes hour and also right before 60 Minutes, but not after (still trying to confirm when the ads stopped running).
In other words, in the United States of America, a man is imprisoned for being a Democrat. When reporters attempt to get this story out, they are threatened and smeared. When all else fails, the public is not allowed to see the news. This is not acceptable and I -- as a US citizen -- demand that Congress investigate this series of blackouts immediately. Any company involved in this must have their FCC license pulled too. Karl Rove may be gone from office, but he clearly is not gone from power. So long as his buddy, George W. Bush, continues to occupy the White House -- what used to be a symbol of how a nation could both be governed and be free -- we will continue toward abuse after imperial, no Soviet, abuse against us. That too is unacceptable.
Contact Congress now, non-stop, and demand a full investigation into what caused this selective blackout. You can find your member's contact information here. If no investigation happens ... If no one in Congress responds, then you will know finally and fully the ugly truth: we are no longer a democracy . And if we are no longer a democracy, then presidential election can fix the problem, because something that no longer exists cannot be fixed. Sadly, at that point, the only path left to us is the one I most abhor.
Update:
We are now being told that it was a technical issue with CBS in New York:
We apologize that you missed the first segment of 60 Minutes tonight featuring "The Prosecution of Don Siegelman."
It was a techincal(sic) problem with CBS out of New York. We are working with them right now to see if we can re-broadcast the segment.
Please be patient with us during this time. We are doing our best to correct the problem.
Excuse me? Are they trying to tell us that a glitch in New York ONLY happened in Alabama -- which is the topic of the 60 Minutes broadcast -- and ONLY during the Don Siegelman segment? Are you kidding me? We have selective prosecution and now we have selective news delivery?

I share your outrage and have no doubts that Rove and his merry band of fascist brownshirts have no limit to who they will defame and how far they will go to do it.
That lame little traitor needs to answer the call of his country and appear before the Judiciary committee front and center.
A full scale investigation of this matter should ensue and if his pudgy little fingerprints are discovered, then he needs to go to jail. Hopefully, Bush won't commute his sentence or pardon him....

It wasn't clear to me from the 60 Minutes segment whether Congress had abandoned the investigation after Rove refused to testify. I'm slowly working my way through the articles linked here, but is there somewhere on a government website to discover what the progress is with the Congressional committee?
It seems to me that with the press access that the current Democratic candidates have they should be shouting out about this every chance they get.

THIS IS HAPPENING IN THE U.S.A???????????
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
I can't remember the last time I swore about anything, I want to but I digress, I want to say that if we don't kick the Republican leadership out of power, we would be like Russia and Pakistan were there is media censorship.

Well, if it takes this event to wake up some folks to what is actually happening in this country (and it ain't pretty), then I admit, I am so happy 'They' did something as stupid as this....
But beware, as noted by others, the Haliburton/KBR camps await.......
And the Thought Control bill awaits....

What does this mean when the whole program or parts of a program does get blacked out by the government? It upsets me to think some person in the administration has the ability to block out anything on public tv. If the rest of the country can see it why can only one part have a programing problem? Is the 60 minute show avaiable online somewhere?

Dear Ms. Alexandrovna,
What an excellent report, you GO GIRL! That's why I heart ya. Damn, you're good, 60 Minutes needs you on their staff.
You said: "This is not acceptable and I -- as a US citizen -- demand that Congress investigate this series of blackouts immediately. Any company involved in this must have their FCC license pulled too."
That was the first thing I thought also. Pull their licenses, after all the airwaves are We, the Peoples. Thanks for all your fine efforts. Agape.

But, I disagree with the idea that our choice for president, if not a panacea, isn't crucial,. We still need to TRY, if only to know what we're dealing with.
In this rising tide of CHANGE, we are at least communicating with each other. But, you're right, it may mean we'll need to storm the gates, in the end.

Wouldn't it be nice if all those commercials to call congress about the Domestic Spying result in a backlash that actually infuses more resistance to Bush's fear mongering. While you're calling, ask CONgress to hold hearings on the Alabama fiasco. Every Democrat should be aware that they could be the next Don Siegelman. Otherwise, welcome to the Soviet States of America!

I mean really, who would have ever envisioned a scenario where allowing a group of mentally defective, alcoholic, ideomorons to run our country, would turn out so badly? The Conservative Politicization of the Judiciary has been going on since Nixon and his evil minion RayGun were in power. Nothing new here other than 60 minutes did a piece on the Alabama judicial lynching. Think anything will be done about this? Think KKKarl Rove will appear before Congress under oath? If you think yes then you have been in a coma the last 35 years. Rome burns while the Congress fiddles a baseball tune! LIVE FREE OR DIE

I watched the segment tonight and there were
no technical "glitches". One thing is certain
we have lost our Democracy. And it does little
good to contact Congress. Even Sandra Day
O'Conner is concerned that politics are
threatening the rule of law in the US.
Right now the White House is influencing the
future of who runs Pakistan and that Bush's
favorite leader, Musharraf has a part in
government.
We are losing Constitutional protections all
the time, yet the attention of most of the
country is on the three Presidential candidates,
and their attention is not on their jobs in
the Senate. Will we get a new President? I
really wonder. How long will it be before
people other than politicians that are considered "threats" begin to disappear?

You know you say there should be a congressional investigation, which I agree with wholeheartedly but the 60 minutes piece said Rove had been supoenaed to testify before congress and refused. I also agree this piece should be front and center on Huffpo.

Why is Rove still free? We got Capone on tax evasion, we can't get Rove on a failure to appear?

It just occurred to me that if the uplink site (New York) had a "glitch", the ALL the receivers should've also had the same glitch, but if there were a glitch with a local/regional downlink, that would make more sense. Someone will need to detail exactly how these go out: simultaneously over the satellite, or over dedicated fiber, or distributed by tape (that seems unlikely in this day and age). But the point is, WHY do they think that nobody will notice? Why do they think they can block one website and nobody will ever see the item again? It's like the old movie gag of "go around to every newsstand and buy every copy of the newspaper and we'll be OK!"

Yeah, BO, expecially when it doesn't affect any other city on the feed, and it just happens to last as long as the first segment, and they just happen to broadcast Reptard fear commercials about the FISA bill, and it just happens in the state that the story is about. Yup, happens all the time, especially when the locals are involved in the corruption. This is like the abusive parent whose kid keeps "falling down." It needs to be investigated by someone who's not an abuser.
