Aloha,

The kahea, the call, from Hawea Heiau complex to drum for the proper protection, respect and care for all our sacred cultural sites in Hawai’i nei and
the call to drum to honor our kupuna and their presence at all these sites has been heard throughout Hawai’i and worldwide.

The kahea has brought a ripple effect reaching supporters from many places in the world. It is a simple kahea with no expectations. All those who choose
to participate are given the freedom to choose their special place and to focus on creating a positive environment to ask the ancestors for guidance.

Those who support our effort will use the pahu, their ipu, ohe pu or whatever instrument they need to join us and this can be as simple as tapping gently over their heart,
but most importantly they come with the beat of their hearts, the beat that unites us all as Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians.

We also unite together and drum to let the State Historic Preservation Department hear that throughout our islands we have lost faith in their ability to properly protect
and respect our precious and priceless cultural areas. A change must come.

In less than a week we have received responses from many that the beat of the drum on Saturday, Nov. 7th will be taking place in sites around the world including:

Bora Bora, Tahiti
Aotearoa (New Zealand)
Australia
Guatemala
Mexico
At Union Square New York City, New York
San Francisco, California
Ojai, California
New Mexico
Colorado
Oregon

Native American Tribes drumming with us include:

Shumash
Anisnebe

At 6pm on Saturday, as the drumming begins, wherever you are, and even if you are by yourself at your sacred site, please know you are not alone but united with
someone else in Hawai’i nei, or around the the world. As Auntie Nani and Auntie Louise sound the pahu for our kupuna iwi ‘o Naue on Kaua’i, the sound of drums
will reverberate through Union Square in New York City and the sound will unite us with our friends in Mexico who will be drumming with us.
We will all be connected at all our sacred sites.

In Guatemala, when they heard about the kahea, they emailed us to let us know they will drum too, “ . . . in Guatemala many of our sacred sites are also in danger.
Together we can have a strong voice.”

And to quote Auntie Louise from Kaua’i, “The drums will beat to unite us all in our belief and cause. We will be drumming to make sure they receive
proper protection, care and respect.”

Our kupuna are with us always, in the sky, the land, the sea and in our hearts and we will fight to make sure they know we are with them and we have not forgotten

The drums of Hawea were silenced,
Years of neglect caused its demise.
A once prominent wahipana,
Reduced to rubble and ruin,
Scarred pohaku caused by ignorance,
Left in a pile of disgrace.

A pohaku canvas paints
The history of those long gone.
Sacred `aina used, as was pono,
To build a kauhale, heiau,s
Sacred enclosures for our people,
To come and pay respect.

The essence of the spirit within Hawea

I am the director and instructor of 'Ohana Arts Studio, Kinderhula, and Polynesian Dance Studio. I specialize in lessons, demonstrations, and special events in Polynesian dancing, Hawaiian quilting, Hawaiian culture, and sewing. I plan to have workshops for sewing Polynesian costumes some time this fall.

I also founded Hui o Polynesia which is an informal cultural organization founded in 2008. All are welcome. The mission of Hui O Polynesia is to nurture an extended 'ohana which perpetuates authentic Polynesian culture and shares the aloha spirit with our community.

I joined a while back, but I lost my password and life got busy, but so glad to be back here. We will be at the Polynesian Festival next month. Hope to see everyone there. :]

In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, the Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance is hosting a workshop in Ori Tahiti, the dance of Tahiti. This introductory workshop features Ori technique (including hip isolations, footwork, and gestures), live drumming, as well as instruction in ‘ote‘a (a dance routine performed to the accompaniment of Tahitian drums).

Now that I am a certified hypnotherapist, I offer hypnotherapy to calm anxiety and dissolve stagefright to anyone in the hula and Hawaiian culture community who needs it! I'm saying it here & now...
....my hula days will permanently take a back burner. I will only do what I know and not take it any further.
After many starts, I found that my love for Belly Dancing is far above Hula. I will not do any hula-specific or fusion shows....but that does not bar me from a special appearance. It's just I will not be performing hula on a regular basis.
I still love hula, but with the time commitment, and most importantly the commitment to the traditions of hula, I do not wish to alter it to my bellydance lifestyle. I strongly am opposed to fusing this beautiful art form. Hula is a culture, it's a way of life that is meant to be preserved.
Middle Eastern Dance is in the most part, progressive....it changes, you even see other cultural influences within the folk pieces....Bellydance can fit into any category. Hula cannot. I would do it regularly, but my daughter has lost interest in the art and will continue to concentrate in her aerial arts and violin.
I will sell off our pieces in hula that I know I will not need any longer. Before I post it on my superstarbeads tribe or Ebay them, I'll list them here if you or anyone you know has an interest in them....All the items listed here are in superior condition.

Aloha Every one!
Right now I am currently looking for ideas .... I have a Mahu Pageant here on the East coast that I am running for. I am Vying for the Title Miss Gay Rhode Island 2009. For the talent portion I have decided to share my culture with the East Coast... Spread the Aloha!
As a keiki I have danced hula all through out high school as well. I have not danced in a few years but I do recognize the basic steps to get me by.
For my talent I want to open with a traditional Auana dance With English and Hawaiian Language then merge into a Tahitian number ..... The transition has to match and flo with the number.
Any one got have Ideas? Please hit me ASAP :)
The pageant is coming up in a few months and i have to Have chosen a number by the end of this month..... I need help...please

About time! (finally found)

Woah, I just read a post i made several months ago (looking for a qualified instructor).
I have finally found (and signed up this week) a VERY GOOD instructor. She's actually the person who has taught several current studio owners/instructors in the area the art of this dance.

But I'm still flabbergasted at how long the process has taken
(I mean, I found an absolutlely fab African Dance Instructor - in just over a week)
And all our bellydance instructors were just as easy...

Well, on to the biz of dance
Hawaiian/Polynesian classes to begin at Beledi Bay starting Sept 8th

Tahitian Sheet Music or other notation

Greetings!

My name is Chip, and I am a drummer for the Tahitian dance troupe "Mou'a Vahine", based in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA.

We are looking to expand our repertoire of live music into more than just ote'a, and to do this we need sheet music or other musical notation for traditional Tahitian music

The first song we are performing is 'Toere oe no Tahiti'...we are currently performing a capella with drums, but adding melody instruments will make it much better (a capella singing is not my strong point, but I just can't say no to our leader!).

So, can anyone help me out with a source for sheet music for Tahitian songs?

I definitely appreciate it!

polynesian/hula question?

Hi I am a newbie- a bellydancer who would like to expand my knowledge of dance.
I met a hula dancer at a belly dance show who was emphatic that polynesian dance was not the same as what she did; that Hula told a story and Polynesian dance was made up of hip movement that she found boring. She said the grass skirts were what people thought of when they heard "hula" but that that was polynesian.... so my question is- Can anyone explain to me what polynesian dance is, and is it possible to begin to learn it from a dvd? If so, what dvd? Or does anyone know of a teacher in the Baltimore MD area?

Finding Instructors

Hello all!
new member this tribe...

I am a dance studio owner - (newly opened in mar 08)
and I'm looking for an experienced/qualified instructor (in the Tampa Bay area) to instruct Polynesian dance.
The classes we currently offer are primarily bellydance - but we would like to offer more variety of world dances
And Polynesian is among those modalities we are looking to add.

We like students know where the dance they perform comes from, as well as the history and culture. I beleive this to be very important.
I had been speaking w/ a Polynesian instructor - but as she has always instructed elsewhere on just a handshake, does not wish to sign my instructors contract. I don't do business on JUST a handshake, so I am back to looking for an experienced/qualified instructor.

Can anyone offer advice assistance on where I might find a good quality instructor.
I am looking for someone who has teaching experience, is capable of breaking moves down into their individual components and passing them on to thrier students (there are many lovely dancers out there - but knowing how to dance, and knowing how to teach dance are two completely seperate things). I dislike the kind of teacher who shows a move a few times then moves on before all their students may have grasped it, or the instructor who teaches soley by the "flow me" method.
But I also want students to learn the history/culture of the dance they perform. Knowing why moves are done a certain way, and where a specific style comes from goes miles in helping that dancer become a beautiful artist.

Any advice on how/where to find such an instructor?

I'm sure you get a fresh crop of newbies popping up like dandelions every now and then looking for good instruction in their area. I'm afraid I'm another one of those. I live in the Chicago area. I've noticed at least 5 different schools and programs offering Hula, Hawaiian and Tahitian dance. I want to see if there is anyone in this group can recommend a teacher or program very active in the hula dance scene, very knowlegeable and respectful of Polynesian culture offering lessons in my area. I am most interested in the dances of Tahiti.

Hawaiian New Year

The season of Makahiki is upon us!

The purpose of Makahiki is to celebrate the traditional Hawaiian New Year with chants, protocols, ho`okupu, and sharing. It is open to all `ohana, individuals, halau, and hui.

However, if you are interested in participating, you must attend an orientation session to learn the protocol and chants.

Halau KaUaTuahine will have an orientation session on Thursday evening, October 11th at 7:00PM. The session will take place at the Center for International Dance,

Hello Everyone,

My name is Ayla, and I'm from American Samoa. I stumbled upon this site by chance. I'm a dancer from American Samoa. I have been dancing since I was three years old, and i am now 18. I do, Hawaiian, Cook Islander, Tahitian, Samoan and Maori.

I am looking for some kind of group I can join in California or Hawaii. I want to make this my profession. If anyone has ANY advice or anything at all, it would be greatly appreciated. And if anyone needs any information from American Samoa, just let me know!

Performers in Northern Virginia?

Hello, I am looking for a dancer or dancers for a private party on July 20th in Great Falls, VA. (Close to DC in Northern VA).

If you can recommend anyone, please let me know. Also, any advice as to the appropriate donation would be helpful!

The party (luau theme) will have about 50 guests, so not a huge event.

Thanks! I copied the info on local teaching resources in Virginia and can start calling, but I thought I would ask for personal recommendations first!

Fan dance?

Has anyone heard of using fan dancing in any polynesian cultural dance? I recently went to a student showcase luau where one dance was choreographed using a combination of fan dancing and tahitian dancing. The fans were not like Asian style, or European style fans or ones you might see a belly dancer use, but non-flashy, natural colored, spade shaped fan. Im not really sure how else to describe it. But has anyone heard of using fans in any island culture dance? It might seem natural because of the weather, but i have never seen a dance like that. Im not saying it's a bad thing, but it would be nice if i could find some cultural context to it. I thought the dance was really cool, and i would like to use something like it, but only if there is cultural context of it in polynesian dance.

Arizona Aloha Festival

From Opening Ceremonies on Saturday to Closing Ceremonies on Sunday,
the Festival is filled with the music, dance, song, and rhythms of
Hawaii and Polynesia. The best of Arizona's and other state's
transplanted Islanders are showcased on 3 stages: the Marketplace
Stage, the Lath House stage and the Island Discovery Stage

Hawaii is represented by both ancient (kahiko) and modern (`auana)
hula as well as steel guitars, and tropical rhythms. A crowd favorite
is when the keiki or children's hula halaus (schools) perform.

Samoa brings the exciting fire dance and energetic slap dance as well
as the seated group dances (mauluulu).

Tonga's songs are marvels of a unique harmony. The women's dances are
known for their soft, graceful movements while the exuberant men's
dances highlight strength and precision.

The drums of the enticing islands of French Polynesia echoes across
the grounds for the fast moving dance known as the otea. No audience
can resist Tahiti!

The fierce Maori's dances often tell of past battles. The wero
(challenge) and the haka are men's dances done for intimidation. The
poi balls are used by the women for telling a story.

Beginner in need of guidance

Hello all,

My 7-year-old daughter and I are taking a "hawaiian dance" class that is run through our city's parks and recs dept. For the class we need a bunch of accessories. Well, actually, the instructor brings her big bag of implements for us to use, but my girl and I would like to practice at home. Do you think you can point us in the right direction? I prefer inexpensive or DIY as we are just starting out.

The paintings of Hawai'i artist (from 1970 -1979), Shari
Keleohoneakekahuli Martens Magno, are hanging in many countries
throughout the world, among them Denmark, England, Australia, Germany
and Canada. While painting was her first love, music became equally
important. Two years after the Alberta government aired a documentary
on her work as an artist, she laid aside her career in painting to
pursue musical studies. Artist and musician, Leohone holds a Master of
Arts degree from Norwich University in Vermont and a Fellowship degree
in Organ Performance from Trinity College of Music, London, England.
From 1982 onwards, she performed organ recitals extensively across
Canada and the Western U.S. until she retired from the concert scene
to Hawaii in 1989. Once settled, she inevitably found her way back to
her first love and has answered her call to paint.

Leohone is the hanai daughter of Paulie Keakealani Jennings, Executive
Producer of the World Invitational Hula Festival, E Ho'i Mai I Ka Pika
Hula. She is presently the Organist/Choirmaster at St. Peter's
Episcopal Church in downtown Honolulu and the Choral Director for the
Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club Chorale. She paddles with Anuenue
Canoe Club in Waikiki.

im new here in san diego. well, not really new. ive been back and forth a couple times within the last year. but now im here for good for the time being. been here about 3 months. originally from hawaii (LAIE). danced, drummed, did music at PCC. looking for a group to become apart of out here in san diego. getting homesick. i miss performing and being apart of something good.
any suggestions would help me out alot!

Caroline Young: In classical Oriental painting, artists approach
their work the way pianists in the West might approach the existing
compositions of the great masters. Each new painting was a
performance that the artist rehearsed for by practicing the
performance of earlier painters. Contemporary artist Caroline Young
took that wisdom to heart. Her delicate watercolors on silk pay
homage to classical Chinese technique called the "delicate style,"
and the lessons she learned from her mentor, Lam Oi Char. Each is a
virtuoso celebration.

Please distribute this widely to your independence minded ohana and friends in the SF Bay Area and urge their participation.

Our chance to give thousands of Berkeley residents exposure to Hawaiian independence is on!!! The Hawaiian Independence contingent will meet up around 10 AM, before the How Berkeley Can You Be? parade, at the garden opposite 2114 California Street in Berkeley on September 17th. (And, as you'll see by the lineup list below, we're right next to the Tibetan contingent, so "Free Tibet" and "Free Hawai'i" will have an obvious conceptual relationship.)

Anyone who wants to show support for a free and independent Hawai'i is welcome to march with us. Just show up!!!

Representatives and supporters of all independence groups are welcome. My intention is to create a public space for a wide range of expression of Hawaiian independence issues.

We welcome handouts from people and organizations representing various aspects of the independence movement. This is a rich and complex issue, and diversity of opinion is a fact. (However please note, pro-Akaka bill handouts are not considered "pro-independence" literature.)

No signup is necessary and all workshops are free – people are welcome to participate on a first-come, first-serve basis. OHANA (FAMILY) KORNER

We are pleased bring back the Ohana Korner, a carnival-like area for families and their children (ages 2-12). There will be games and prizes for the keiki (kids) to win, a raffle, and arts and crafts.

On Saturday, Aug. 5, the Children’s Fairyland of Oakland will present excerpts from the play “Ohana Means Family” at 1:30, 2:00, 3:00, 3:30 and 4:00 pm. The play, performed by children, weaves together Hawaiian legends and hula, and shows how families working together can change the world.

Please note that your keiki must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Kim Taylor Reece, Hawaii's foremost fine art photographer, has
been studying hula kahiko for nearly 25 years. A catalyst of
Hawaii's Cultural Renaissance, his photography captures the
mystery and magic of this dance, which for generations has excited
the imaginations of people around the world.

In his research, Kim has traveled with the Hawaii State Foundation of
Culture and the Arts, enabling him to study and work with dancers from
more than 37 different Pacific Islands. His extensive research of
costumes and dances of the early Hawaiians captures the spirit and
essence of this ancient ritual.

His unique style has established the visual standards for hula kahiko.
As millions encounter Kim's work everyday, it helps to preserve
the hula and enrich lives with his fine art photography.

Kim's award winning photography has brought him worldwide
recognition. Over the years, Kim has received 15 Pele Awards
(communication and arts), Print Magazine Awards, Kahili Awards (HVCB),
Travel Journalism Awards and National Community Service Awards. His
images have been acquired by collectors, dignitaries, and museums
internationally.

He studied art at Long Beach State in California and because he is
color-blind was told to "change majors or be a starving artist". He
uses it to his advantage in capturing the subtleties of the kahiko in
black and white. He uses sepia tone to represent the timelessness of
the dance. Kim has been publishing his art prints since 1983.

Kim has a gallery at Sacred Falls, Oahu, Hawaii. "The beauty in nature
of the lush green valley and the striking blue ocean exemplifies what
I am trying to portray through my work." Says the artist of his remote
location.

For those who appreciate hula, Kim Taylor Reece has devoted his
talents to the celebration of Hawaii's ancient dance.

New Class at the Academy of Hawaiian Arts

New Hula Le'a Class Starting on Thursday nights

First class on June 1st, 7-9pm

Dancers of all levels are invited to attend the Academy's newest hula class for adults, Hula Le'a, starting Thursday, June 1st from 7-9pm. Due to an overwhelming number of requests for a weeknight class that focuses less on stage performances and more on hula for recreation, the Hula Le'a (meaning fun or light-hearted) class was formed.

While some dance or hula experience is likely necessary to keep up with the instruction by Kumu Hula Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu, anyone interested is encouraged to attend and try out the class. More information about this new class can be found at AHA's website.

Enrollment Requirements:
To enroll at AHA, prospective students must do the following:

1) complete the enrollment form (available on AHA's website);
2) review the AHA member policies (also available on AHA's website);
3) pay a $25 enrollment fee and the first month's dues (checks should be made payable to: Academy of Hawaiian Arts, Inc.);
4) purchase two AHA t-shirts at $25 a pair.

Studio Location:
The Academy studio is located at 10700 MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, in the Foothill Square Shopping Center. The studio is behind the former Albertson's supermarket.
