New Pompadour

Hey everyone
I just joined this tribe and I recently got a hair cut for years I have had long hair but for years I have wanted a pompadour. I grew up in the 1980's and I was inspired by many sources to have this sort of hairstyle, one was alot of older gents in my town wore there hair greased and I always thought this looked sharp and classy. Also in the 80's there was a sort of 1950's retro revival and since that time I have wanted to wear my hair this way....well after years of long hair. I was approached by my company to travel abroad and they asked if I would cut my hair so I said sure but I had to have a classy cut if I was going to bother doing my hair, I wantedit to look smooth.

Currently Its looking pretty good I am using a variety of products trying to find what works best for me. I use surf hair for hold or redkin rewind 06 and lately I have been finishing it with Dax short and neat. I also have coldwell Star polish which had a ton of hold. Initially I was using only the greases, and nothing for hold or loft, but they seem to make my hair heavy and made me have more of a flopadour than a pompadour. I also had too much hair on top at first it wasn't until my freind and hairstylish Julie cut my hair correctly that I was able to achieve the look I am going for. Currently I am styling a lot like Johnny cash in his earlier days. I recently purchased Murrays beesewax creme but I haven't tried it yet, because I left it in my freinds car.

Hopefully I can post some pics soon
What does the term "GREASER" really mean?

WHAT DOES THE TERM "GREASER" REALLY MEAN?
******************************************

Well, I personally couldn't give the ass of a dyin' rat if ya call me a greaser, a ted, a rocker, or a magical blossoming fart blooming in the desert's dust! When I first started greasing my hair into a pompadour was back in 1977 when my family and I moved from Canada to Camden Town, London, England. My new neighbourhood has Teddy Boys, punks, skinheads, and a generally wide and varied array of outcasts. I made my choice for this look based on the music, who my mates were, and what I liked. That don't make me a Ted today, nor a greaser, nor...well - you get the idea, right?

Do people call me a greaser? Yep...oh - and I also hear "Elvis" at least 5 times a day from idiots, and Ted, and rockabilly guy...who really cares?

BURSTIN' ALL THE BUBBLES
************************

Hate to tell all y'all who argue that a "real" greaser has to know cars or just wears the 'do and the drapes from the 50's, but it's both the hair and the cars, separately and/or together. When looking at it from the dictionary's perspective, this is what we get:

greas·er
Pronunciation: 'grE-z&r, -s&r
Function: noun
Etymology: 1grease
1 : one that greases
2 : usually disparaging : a native or inhabitant of Latin America or a Mediterranean land; especially : MEXICAN
3 : an aggressive swaggering young white male usually of working-class background

___________________________________________

Nowhere within that definition are cars mentioned, though, as you'll see a bit further down, cars/'cycles do figure into the equation somewhat.

Now, some are aware of the derogatory way the term has been used for Latin Americans. Though an early use of the term "greaser", you may not realize that it's one of many uses for the word, and that its use originated at various times in history meaning different things (like so many words do!), not just at that point.

The terms have different meanings.

_____________________________________

To take it one step further, here's the Encyclopedia description from Wikipedia:

* Greasers is a subculture that started in the 1950s and continued through the mid-1960s. It is debatable whether the name derives from the heavy use of hair grease or from the dirty state of the clothes and motorcycles they used. In the 1950s the Greasers were rebellious, forming gangs and riding motorcycles. Music of the Greasers was Rock and Roll, Elvis and other "rebellious" music of the era. Their fashion style of leather jackets and denim jeans was inspired by Marlon Brando's The Wild One. Later movies and television programs glorifying Greasers would include The Lords of Flatbush (1974), the Happy Days series (1974-1984), the film Grease (1978) and its 1982 sequel, and The Outsiders (1967).

Worthy of mentioning is the fact that the Greaser sub-culture was largely an American youth phenomenon, where as the British equivalent would be the rockers or Teddy Boy (youth culture)s (Teds) of the 1950's and the Swedish raggare. Although leather and motorcycles were not part of the Teds culture, it was part of the Ton-Up Boys culture of the same era.

The 1960s British parallel to the Greaser would be the Rocker. Rockers evolved from the Ton-Up Boys and Teddy Boys ("Teds") of the previous decade. The term Greaser only came into use later when Hells Angels or hippy bikers started being the norm in the 1970s.

In Australia and New Zealand, the term Bodgie was used for the same phenomenon.

In Estonia - Lõngus (Greasers - Lõngused).

In Scandinavia - Raggare.

_______________________________________

and the, there's

Pachucos
********

Excerpt from the St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture:

The pachucos were Latino street rebels of the 1940s who innovated a style and attitude that expressed their defiance of mainstream America. Dressed to kill in zoot suits and with pompadour haircuts they hung out on the streets of East Los Angeles, speaking their own language and asserting their difference from everyone around them. The hairdo to go with the look was the pompadour, a relatively long hair cut for men, worn greased into a quiff at the front and combed into a duck's tail at the back. In the hair the pachucos kept their fileros (flick knives), the thickness of the hair style providing a secure hiding place for weapons.

_______________________________________
"THE LOVELESS" - DVD review...

THE LOVELESS
*************
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085872/

*For films I own, my movie comments, and more, visit
http://www.imdb.com/mymovies/list

Now that this beautifully sculpted, wildly atmospheric, true-to-the-era in which it is set movie is on DVD, I've watched and re-watched it many times.

This is, by far, one of the finest films paying homage to the motorcycle enthusiasts (or outlaws, as it may be), settings, and characters of the 1950's that I've ever seen, and I own many, so any rockabilly guys or gals out there reading this review - this movie is for you! It's moody, sexy, violent, and slick - great eye-candy with an outstanding cast of characters.

This is more of a review of the DVD than of the whole film, and the spoilers are more DVD commentary-related than plot-related, so, if you've sen the DVD, read on if you wish. If ya haven't, you'll wanna after reading this!

The DVD has one of the better commentaries, featuring conversations with the film's co-writer/co-directors Kathryn Bigelow & Monty Montgomery, as well as the film's star, Willem Dafoe http://www.geocities.com/woosterdafoe/main.html . Dafoe credits the movie's directors for starting his career with this movie (the character of “Vance” was his first credited role), a fact which Monty Montgomery humbly shrugs off. They get into the movies they watched that directly influenced how "The Loveless" was shot, trivia notes, like how Robert Gordon http://www.robertgordon.dk/main.html , who was paid to score the flick blew all of the budget on on single calypso tune that is featured for a few minutes of the film. It would also seem that Gordon, who is most noted for being a rockabilly musician (and an excellent one at that!) was inadvertently cast while meeting with the film's directors. Gordon created some on-set tension that flickered mainly between himself and Dafoe, as Gordon felt that he was the only one on set who truly understood the whole biker/greaser world. Another fact to remember when looking at tghis movie - the days hit anywhere from 98 to 110 degrees fahrenheit on set and location, and during the entire movie, Dafoe is clad from head to foot in thick biker leathers - Ouch!!!

It is interesting to note that the movie was Bigelow's thesis for Columbia University's film class, as well as her directorial debut, and it must've earned her some high marks, as she's gone on to work with people like David Lynch http://www.davidlynch.de/ . Montgomery, too, has worked extensively with Lynch, producing "Wild At Heart", working on "Twin Peaks", and acting in "Mulholland Dr."

For those who expect this to be a biker exploitation flick (like "The Wild One" and all of its followers thereafter), you're in for a surprise. The directors intended for the audience to feel as if that is what they were in for while the initial scenes unfold, but as the story moves forward, we realize that it isn't so much a biker film but more of a kind of a wild-west movie. Monty Montgomery credits Edgar G. Ulmer's short, noir film "Detour" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037638/ as being the major influence as far as the style, the framing, and the shots of "The Loveless" go. He also credits Kenneth Anger's movie "Scorpio Rising" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058555/ as the movie that inspired the whole homo-eroticism of the biker world as presented in this, Montgomery’s earliest film.

For those interested in some trivia, here ya be - Originally titled "U.S. 17", which used to be a U.S. superhighway up until the 1960's when the I 95 highway replaced it as the major thruway from Georgia to Florida and up to New York, the entire film is shot on location along this now abandoned stretch of blacktop. Monty Montgomery, the movie's co-director, grew up in and around the Georgia area where the film was shot, and at the time of filming, the stretch of road was like a time capsule, with abandoned motels, diners, and gas stations along the way which had not changed since the 40's and the 50's. This made the reality of the movie much easier to capture, and cut down massively on the cost of what would have meant soundstage creations of all of these types of locations. I wonder if any of these places exist now, as the movie was done at the beginning of the 80's? I can only hope...

There is no disguising that this film focuses more on atmosphere than on plot, and there is no pretense to suggest that the directors intended anything else. Montgomery even refers to it as "eye-candy", and why not? Sometimes my eyes crave the cavities offered up by such sweet treats as "The Loveless"! There are many a long, lingering shot of beautiful vintage 'cycles being worked on, close ups on tattoos (one of the actors, Larry Matarese, who plays "La Ville", opted for an actual old-school pinup gal tattoo on his forearm before filming began), tension-creating pauses while characters look on sipping coffee in a diner or lean on a 50's Coke machine clad in leather and denim, and all of this works for the piece that this movie was meant to be.

It is somewhat of homage to "The Wild One", but only in that it deals with motorcycle enthusiast-rebels in the 50's - all other plot comparisons and similarities fall by the wayside.

Though they wished for a score that was more like Sergio Leone's large, sweeping, and melodramatic western film's scores, and they were held back by budgetary constraints, I felt what they did have to work with offered the film the nostalgic atmosphere perfectly. The score as it stands on the DVD (which, unfortunately is not on CD, record, or tape, darn it!) largely done by John Lurie http://www.strangeandbeautiful.com/ (of "The Lounge Lizards" fame, and also a regular in many Jim Jarmusch films), along with a minimal amount of tracks supplied by Robert Gordon, can be credited for being the cherry on top of this 50's diner served, tasty milkshake of a flick!

See ya ‘round,
KNUT BELL
**********
http://www.knutbell.com/

A mighty amalgam, this voice of Knut Bell. It's the faraway thunder of coarse sandpaper sung through a tugboat smokestack. It's the mournful midnight howl of a freight train laden with grain, coal and lumber. It's the drone of an ancient chainsaw lugging it's way through an even more ancient Douglas fir. It's Johnny Cash and Red Foley, Tennessee Ernie Ford and Waylon Jennings, Ernest Tubbs and Woody Guthrie. A voice of the ages, this is the voice Knut Bell.

Hailing from the Skagit Valley, about 60 miles north of Seattle, Knut Bell's music is classic country; songs that are honest and gritty, they're songs of the homeland, the trades, love, and history. From loggers to fishermen, drinking to dancing; the stories include pride, passion, places and people. With songs like Down on Ballard Avenue, Chief Sealth, Yakima Girl and '0l Washington, Bell could easily become the poster boy for Pacific Northwest Tourism. But again, this is a classic and Bell takes it far beyond a charming regional piece; this work is universal and comes complete with yearning ache, perceptive wit and a heavily poured shot of humor and politics. Sophisticated is NOT what this music is about. It's honest, clean. and genuine.

Music from the heart, the gut and the soul.

This does NOT include the annoying wankers with too much money to spend and little else to do but blow it in cheesy dance clubs sporting the latest trends and repeating shite they heard on Friends or blathering about what happened on whatever crappy-assed "reality" show they watched last night.

That means that if you have the gall to utilize and misappropriate the term HIPSTER (as much as you have the word "urban") and add friggin' URBAN in front of it, GET LOST! The urban thing be so nuthin' anymore, it ain't funny and it just makes ya look like every other cargo pant advertisement out there. You're as original as a GAP commercial and twice as boring as a COLORS magazine! - SHOO! BUGGER OFF!

The rest of you - you poets, musicians, thrift shop savvy, sharp as a tack in the best of ways folks - you know who you are! C'MON IN!!!

THE BUS STOP ~ A SMOKER'S STORY
*******************************

Now, this is one of those stories that'll hit a chord with most smokers, albeit an odd an extreme case. I will preface this by stating that I am a pretty damned conscientious fella with awareness of those in my close vicinity and some understanding for those non-smokers. When it comes to smoking outside, however, I occasionally can be a bit of a rebellious guy. See, everywhere in Canada is non-smoking now, so my only safe haven is my home and the out-of-doors, and I'll be damned if someone who is breathing in a buttload of vehicular carbon monoxide and every other airborne toxin is gonna rain on my limited parade whilst I enjoy my tobacco.

So, a few months back, I'm standing at a bus stop in downtown Vancouver. One thing to know 'bout my environment ~ the city I live in is plagued with passive-aggresive personalities and overly politically correct folks. So, as I've been inside for an hour or so, I figure I'll enjoy a smoke while waiting for the bus. As there is a woman in her late 60's/early 70's standing by at the stop as well, I move about 10 feet away from her and make sure I'm down wind. I may be a bit of a prick 'bout my ever-lessening rights, but I was taught to respect my elders!

Some of you may be familiar with what happened next, as it is the friggin' mating call of the passive-aggressive non-smoker. The woman begins an exaggerated cough, waving her hand all dramatic-like in front of her face. Now, I have no idea where this could be going, as it is a complete physical impossibility that she is getting one iota of my smoke blowin' her way - it's windy, and the wind is goin' away from the ole bird.

Much to my surprise, she call over to me with "Would you put that out!" Well, you can figure that was like bein' blindsided with a 2X4! Incredulously, I asked (as I wasn't sure if I'd heard her correctly) "I'm sorry..What?" "Your smoke is bothering me. Put it out!". Now, we're in a pretty nasty end of town, and I'm thinkin' it's a damned good thing the lady has picked me as a target and not someone hittin' the ole glass pipe! That'd been a disaster! I had to be straught with her. "Look" I started, "I'm standing 10 feet from you with the wind goin' that way, and I can't smoke anywhere else, so maybe you should move if it's bothering you that much." I figured that was that...no such luck.

Next...well, next showed me that kooky folks'll be dumb enough to do anything to prove their kooky points. Her retort was "Fine. How would you feel if I started spitting and some of it hit you? Hmm?" I couldn't believe my ears! Was this for real? Then, she did it. Grandma started strolling towards me, spitting on my pant leg. I kid you not! I think I was wearin' one of those faces reserved for those times when you're surprise dry buttfucked with a pool cue without so much as a "how-do-you-do?" - I was shocked. Shocked and pissed off that someone would A) So stupid as to equate one thing with the other (as my smoke wasn't near her!) and B) That gradma was actually committing a crime, as spitting on a person is considered assault in our city!

She got closer and closer, and I said "You're gonna wanna stop that, ya nut!" She didn't. I continued - "Look, lady, I'm normally polite, but you're doin' something I could have you fucking arrested for!". Well, the ole dame got closer and I could see she was gonna aim a wee bit higher -l ike at my face - for her next goober, and I'll be god-god-damned if I was lettin' THAT happen!

I aimed my cigarette, heater forward, in flick position square at her face saying "You're acting like a serious psycho, lady. If ya spit one more time, I'm gonna launch this!".

It was then that my bus pulled up and the driver opened the door, seeing this crazy tableau of an old bitty with a loogie worked up and some pompadoured young guy pointing a butt in her face!

I boarded the bus, and, as can be expected, the driver asked what the hell all that was about. I told him, and thank god he was a smoker too, 'cause his response to the whole thing was "It takes all kinds, huh?".

So, if you're a non-smoker and your standing anywhere near me in the city, keep in mind that you're suckin' in all kinds of shite other than my smoke, and before asking me to either move or to butt out, think about goin' INTO one of the umpteen-million places I CAN'T go with my cigarette!

Best,
T.Paul

The history of the pompadour ~ PART 1

The dame what started the whole "Pompadour" trend in the mid-to-late 1700's can be seen here:
http://encyclopedia.laborlawtalk.com/wiki/images/thumb/e/eb/300px-Madame_de_Pompadour.jpg

Though what she represented has very little to do with the hairstyle as it is worn today, she is the gal we wanna thank for the name! Here's a bit on her:

Madame de Pompadour
********************
(December 29, 1721 - April 15, 1764) was the famous mistress of King Louis XV of France.

The Marquise de Pompadour has widely been known as a patron of the arts and literature. She had a huge library of thousands of books and had given her patronage to the writer Voltaire. She was also very successful in her artistic creations.

She loved new buildings and decorative arts, and thus the fashion that she used is identified with the term "Pompadour style." Such interests allowed her to acquire many houses and mansions such as the Hotel d'Evreux. She also planned the building of the palace of Compeigne and the Petit Trianon Palace at Versailles. The two most notable creations of the Marquise were the porcelain works of Sevres and the Ecole Militaire. Through her many works she became known as the patron of many artists like Boucher, sculptors, and architects like Lassurance.
