used Spinsterz Fire Hoop For Sale

Hey. I'm getting myself a new fire hoop to better suit my needs and would like to pass off this Spinsterz Hoop to someone else in the community.
Last year I paid $200 for it. That's with shipping and I sprung for the 2" wicks. It's only been burned maybe 20 times. It's collapsible and the wicks are removable. For all the specs on the hoop check: http://www.thespinsterz.com/fire-toys/firehoop.htm
It's the Black Cherry variety.
I'm willing to negotiate the price. It's a great hoop, just not right for me. Let me know what you have in mind if you're looking to burn some.

Thanks.

Barely used Spinsterz Fire Hoop For Sale

Hey guys and gals. The whole fire hooping thing didn't do for me what I thought it would. I've spun this Cherry Spinsterz fire hoop 6 times. It's a wonderful design and a great hoop but I'd rather spin my little 32 incher any day.
It has no ware other than the wicks having been lit.
I sprung for the fatty wicks so I paid $198.95 after shipping and all. I'll post it for $180 and we can go from there.
I'd really like to see this great hoop get more love than I can give it.

You can check out the deets on it at www.thespinsterz.com/firehoop.htm

Love to you all!!

Fire Breathing Survey

i'm reposting this...

A couple months ago, a boston area man entered the hospital with burns from learning fire breathing. Unfortunate for him, but the
accident may lead to some good.

An attending surgeon has taken an interest in fire breathers and has been working with NAFAA (North American Fire Arts Association, www.nafaa.org) to produce some clear information regarding fire breathing and the various fire arts. We ask that you support this effort in any way you can, so that we can benefit from the results of actual, scientific research in our area.

The first step is a survey for fire breathers. If you have breathed fire in any capacity, you are encouraged to fill it out. If you have not, please forward to any fire breathers you may know. Here's the link:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=esrXqEc5Qyrdq3rVs_2bcP4w_3d_3d

(If that gets truncated or split, use http://tinyurl.com/ajlonb)

All data will go directly to research, it is voluntary, and completely anonymous.

2009 Burning Man fire conclave

Hello everybody!

It's that time of year again... Time to start thinking about what we're going to do with Oregon Fire conclave. For those of you that don't know me, I'm Shelley and I've been a part of conclave since 2005 and I have volunteered for the shin position for 2009's burn. I am looking for fire performers of all levels who are willing to commit to several rehearsals and to performing in the Great Circle prior to the Man burning.

I'd like to have a meeting with all interested parties on Sunday, February 8 at 4(ish) to get everybody thinking about what we'd like to do for our performance this year, and to get an idea of how many of you are interested, who plays with what tools, and what level dancers we have to work with. I'd like to make the meeting accessible to everyone, and, as I am not in Portland (I live in Salem), I'd love some feedback as to where people think we should meet up on the 8th.

I'm very excited for the opportunity to work with all of you and I know that, together we can make this a wonderful experience! Feel free to contact me via tribe OR at my email at shelley.wright@gmail.com

Burn on!

Poi workshop in Eugene, OR with ALIEN JON

Come explore a new movement or IMPROVE the skills you already have. Don't miss this rare opportunity to be taught by our visiting teacher Alien Jon.

We are pleased to announce Poi Workshops in Eugene with Jon this Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the Core Star!!!!

On Saturday, November 29th poi teacher “Alien Jon” will be up from Los Angeles to teach two classes at the CoreStar Dojo. The Dojo is located at 439 W. 2nd in Eugene. The first class is at the beginner level, the second is for intermediate and beyond.
These classes are a rare opportunity to learn from someone who knows poi at the highest level. No one will leave disappointed.

For a video of Alien Jon with poi go to: www.youtube.com/watch

BEGINNER LEVEL CLASS from 3pm-4:25pm
If you’re new to poi or haven’t been spinning long, this class is for you. Jon will teach a much better system than the usual “this is the weave!” class that beginners often get. The goal is to give new students a more comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts of poi. The main topics will be ‘Timing and Direction’, ‘Turning and Moving’, ‘Driving Styles’ (isolation, extension, linear,…), and ‘Spaces Around Your Body’.
The class will give you lots of information and practice exercises so you can stay motivated in your practice long after the workshop ends.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL CLASS from 4:30pm-5:55pm
This workshop will open your mind and body to poi as you haven’t experienced it before. Most of the primary topics from the first class will be covered, but in more depth and by teaching crazy moves as examples. For instance, when covering ‘Spaces Around Your Body’, this class will delve into in-swings, inside planes, and introversions. Prepare yourself for lots of information.
We expect the class size for Intermediate to be small, so there will be lots of personal attention. Group interest and skill will dictate the pace of the class. Bring something to write notes on.

PRICING: 1 Workshop - $20 Both Workshops - $30
Please call Zan at 514-8325 to confirm your interest. Thanks!
If these times don’t work for you, contact us about setting up a private lesson to learn even faster. Email djoneverett (at) gmail (dot) com

Firestaff prep tonight

So on Tuesday, August 26 at 11am I will be doing a firestaff making session at Burning Man at our camp, Mooncake Rebellion (730 and Gremline). After doing the last few steps of making a firestaff, 20 lucky people will walk away with a kevlar wicked firestaff ready for use.
Before going out to the playa I do several of the steps here in PDX in my garage. I will be doing it tonight and would love some assistance if anyone wants to come out and help. Ideally you have some skill with powertools, but not required.
My address is 1304 SE 48th ave (one block n of Hawthorne). I will start at 6pm. Come on out! You will not be taking a firestaff home tonight, but you will see how one is made. Thanks. Brad

What do you get when you combine 100 tribal drums, live-mixed electronica, fire performers, hoop dancers, aerial artists, John Avila (Oingo Boingo) on bass, Steve Reid (Rippingtons/Supertramp) on percussion, a live horn section, Chinese parade lions, giant screen visuals and a bevy of interactive dancers and performers? The Mutaytor is part hip-grinding techno-retro-funk, part audience-interactive post-modern circus. The act takes drastically advanced elements of the Grateful Dead, Parliament-Funkadelic, the Crystal Method, Louis Prima and Blue Man Group and throws them directly at the audience as riotous surreal entertainment notable for "turning Civilians into Rockstars." The sound is tight, the show manic, the vibe all-inclusively friendly. They are on stage, above the audience, IN the crowd.

Hey everybody. I'm new in town and I was looking forward to meeting some fellow spinners next Sunday, but I'm kind of confused. I've read the post concerning fire safety and the dealings with the police and I wasn't quite sure if the Jam was still on or not. If someone could just drop me a quick heads up that would be fantastic, thanks,

The Past, the Present, and the Future of Fire Performance in PDX

The following email is intended to be a useful summary, backstory, and presentation of potential next steps for the interested parties for Fire Performance in this town...

Portland Fire Department
Portland Parks Department
Commissioner Dan Saltzman's Office
Fire Performers
Venue Owners

The Past:

Nearly every skilled fire performer in this town has played with fire on the Eastbank Esplanade in the last 8 years. But think, for a moment, of who was there when you _weren't_ there. IT had long been a great amateur night, however as things got more dangerous/popular, skilled and safe performers stopped going. It was the drums, or the crowd, or the hours, or the risk of losing one's insurance by association, or the total lack of safety.

For whatever reason, the event lost the support and efforts of those most integral to the fire performance community in this town. And yet it continued. From once a month, to twice a month, to every single week. A massive drum circle formed the heart of the activity, with fire jam an unregulated off-shoot from that. This event went undisturbed through the summer of 2007, and through the winter of 2008, with many believing that nothing would ever change.

The Present:

Currently in this town, a performer wishing to perform in a COMMERCIAL building or property needs to get permission from the property management/owner, and then go to the Fire Department for a free "pinkie permit" which says that they have read the C-7s and that the location has been inspected by the Fire Department. Spinning without a pinkie permit in any non-residential setting is grounds for a $500 fine from the fire permit (including those peeps at Last Thursday), as is spinning in violation of the C-7 guidelines (such as spinning with gasoline).

Approximately 6 weeks ago, conversation erupted on several fire lists at once: PDX-Poi, Portland-Oregon Fire Artists Tribe, Oregon Conclave, perhaps others. One persons concern about the flagrant disregard for basic fire and safety was echoed by many, many performers. Many professed distaste for the current Eastbank Esplanade, and expressed the opinion that they hoped it wouldn't affect fire performance around the city.

Well, now it has.

A meeting was called, hosted at Watershed in the SE of Portland, that was attended by

- Ang
- Deb
- Eric
- dlb (myself)
- Steve
- Alan

Our greatest fear at the time was the Fire Department, not the Parks Department. We feared that if the fire department discovered the lack of extinguishers, wet towels, buckets of water, perimeter, safe fuel dumps, and use of illegal fuels, they would gain the impression that fire performance in this town was being run like that in general.

We pledged to be down there for 8 weeks minimum. We met at 6pm each Sunday, brought all necessary fire safety gear and flags/caution tape, our most controversial insertion. After five weeks, the grumbling and anger from the drummers, from fire performers indignant at the change had mostly died away. Things seemed to be moving towards a safe, sustainable spin jam. Other performers began joining the list of fire safety people talking about this topic:

Randy
Samhain
River
etc.

In the background, the wheels of the bureaucracy had already begun turning. The Fire Marshall's office, which has at least some awareness of the conversations that take place in the fire performance community, called Mark Warrington, the head of Parks. Mark Warrington sent down Officer Rob Pickett, who took the names and phone numbers of the Fire Safety team, that first week.

That was the FIRST WEEK the fire safety team had ever been down there, and we congratulated ourselves that the police had left content that safety was being upheld.

Officer Rob Pickett passed the note to Mark Warrington, Director of Parks, who called Steve on April 7th. Steve passed the contact info for Ang, who arranged a meeting with the parks for April 25th, 2007. We believed that the meeting was to demonstrated that we were keeping the event safe by fire safety standards, and to ask for assistance in dealing with the alcohol issue. We also wanted the fire and parks department to back us up on the specifics of how we were keeping the 10’ perimeter called for by the C-7 using flags/caution tape on Parks Property.

The Meeting:

Yesterday’s meeting had the following attendees:

Parks Department:
Mark Warrington – Director
Cary Coker – Permitting
Barbara Aguon – Safety
Kita Xayachack – Permit Center
Marge White -

Fire Department –
Kari Schimel – Senior Inspector
Jerry Alvarez – Special Event Permitting
Michel Coefield – Special Events

Fire Safety Crew –
Alan Placido
Ben Grad (deadletter b)
Eric Bagai
Steve Burger
Debra Lyn Ochoa
Angela Capello

Independent Fire Performers –
Randy Scheless

While the meeting does deserve its own post, let me summarize briefly here:
Two years ago, the PP&R (Portland Parks and Rec) could have come in, nodded at the current fire safety setup, and asked the Portland Police Department (PPD) to regulate the drinking. If necessary, they could have provided the PFD with written permission to use the property in order that Fire Performers could have individual pinkie permits, meaning that those without permits could be pressured into either not spinning or adopting basic fire and safety standards.

Now, with the “no open flame “ rule, they cannot selectively enforce. The presence of the ubiquitous drinking and partying is to be stopped. Unfortunately, the PP&R feel that they cannot enforce that rule without enforcing the “no open flames rule”.

As of Sunday, we have been told that the PFD, PP&R and PPD will be down to enforce the No Open Flame rule, and to ticket/expel people from the park for drinking.

This means that the DRUM circle can go on. If it doesn’t drink. And if it’s main adherents aren’t expelled for drinking. The Fire Jam aspect is done. For Now.

PP&R reactions in other parks:

Now that the PP&R has become aware of the problem, fire performers in other parks need to be aware that they are breaking the following regs:

1) No Open Flames
2) Performing without a Pinkie Permit, which cannot be obtained for a public park.

The risk for the former is a ticket or expulsion for a year (probably a warning or a desist). The risk for the latter is a $500 fine per person from the PFD (probably a warning or a desist).

Portland Fire Department Reactions:

Jerry Alvarez and Kari Coleman said that it is time to have a more comprehensive permitting system for fire performers. The days of no regs or a Pinkie Permit are nearing an end! I believe that we should grasp this process by the horns and turn it to our advantage. It is not a given that a more comprehensive permitting system (yearly permits by location, individual or troupe) need cost money – they would instead involve a few hours of class in spotting, fuels and regs, and appropriate fire tool composition (no cotton, no wires, etc).

THE FUTURE:
Here’s what we’re going to do: I spent the morning in Commissioner Sam Adams and, more importantly, Commissioner Dan Saltzman’s (parks and rec commissioner) talking about the issue. I would have visted with the Fire Commissioner, however that is currently vacant awaiting the special election. I will attempt to get this email to the two main candidates, Jim Maddaugh and Nick Fish.

The plan would be to have the “Open Flame” rule amended in the following manner:

20.12.110 Fires, Fireworks and Smoking Prohibited.
A. No person shall light any fire in any Park, except in areas and/or facilities designated by the Director for such use and in conformance with all applicable laws. This Section does not prohibit lighting cigarettes, cigars or pipes in areas where smoking is permitted.

B. No person shall possess or ignite any fireworks in any Park, where such possession or use is unlawful under State law. No person shall possess or ignite any otherwise legal fireworks in any of the following Parks, without a permit:

1.      Pioneer Courthouse Square;
2.      O’Bryant Square;
3.      Lownsdale Square;
4.      Forecourt/Ira Keller Fountain;
5.      Ankeny Square;
6.      Classical ChineseGarden;
7.      Block 5 Park (Moyer);
8.      Eastbank Esplanade;
9.      HolladayPark;
10. Any nature park or area designated as a natural area;\
11. Any other Park or Park area designated by the Director.

C. No person shall light or smoke any tobacco products within twenty-five (25) feet of any play structure, picnic table or designated children’s play area, or in an area under permit where prohibited by the permit holder, or in any other place in any Park where smoking is prohibited by the Director.

PROPOSED: (there are other ways to change this, as well, such as ONLY designated the Eastbank Esplanade)
D. Individuals with a yearly permit on file with the Portland Fire Department in their own name are permitted to juggle, perform with, and practice fire performance on PP& R property according to the following guidelines:

1. All c-7 guidelines are followed, especially
i. use of appropriate fuels\
ii. 10’ perimeter maintained between active fire performers and any audience, spectators or passerby
iii. Fire safety personnel present, even if no passerby present
2. No fire performance or fire breathing within 25’ of wooden restrooms, play structures, picnic table, or shelter.
3. Fire performers, perimeter or other setup will maintain a minimum 8’ of passage for the public on public walks and right-of-ways.

Again, if the Open Flames ordinance were amended, the drinking could leave, and the drummers and safe fire performers could stay.
First Sunday Fire Jam 4/6

Some of the PDX Fire Jam tribe members did the first "fire safety intervention" this past Sunday. It was a good experience and many of the performers were open to following the layout. The safety crew is still tweaking the layout but they're hopeful that with a continued presence it will be possible to spread the word of fire safety and community .

I'd like to encourage everyone who's performed at the fire jams in the past to come out and spin a lil' fire, connect with some of the new peeps in the community, support the safety crews efforts, and basically show the love of the fire community that we've created.

See you there!
Though I have not seen anything that can help me pinpoint where or when.
Can anyone give me any information on this?
Are they still happening? Where? When? One tonight?

Ridiculous- as in WORTHY OF RIDICULE

Okay boys and girls, there is a point.
A point where it isn't smart anymore.
A point where is isn't fun anymore.
A point where it isn't SANE anymore.
The bridge fire jam has gone far beyond all of the above points.
For those of you who weren't there to witness, here's what happened between 9 and 10 (when I left):
1. There was no safety whatsoever when I arrived
2. There were people who were obviously (a) under the influence and (b) never spun a tool before, much less on fire, out in the circle without there being any safety.
3. There was a fire breather breathing lamp oil literally OVER a crowd which included children and they were covered with the petroleum spray.
4. I, as safety, was literally a foot from being hit in the face by a man from the group described in (2) and had to scream at the top of my lungs at him so that he didn't hit me or the small child right next to me.
5. Some idiot of unimaginable proportions decided to spill fuel all over the dancer area and we had the biggest fuel fire I have ever seen. And then people (wearing flammable clothing and frayed jeans) proceeded to dance in the spilt fuel.
6. In response to Shireen's announcement that if such antics continued, the event would be shut down, a man yelled at her "So what? It was an accident, no one got hurt!" which is utterly beside the point.
7. A guy decided to light away from the circle and when urged to reenter it, almost hit a child in the face with his flaming staff
8. Throughout the night, even experienced performers were standing over open fuel cans and smoking.

I am disgusted with the point to which this once lovely event has degenerated to.
I will say I told you so when 20 tweekers and innocent bystanders get their faces blasted off.

This event should be shut down.

Guys,

It's far too wet and cold to stay out at sewallcrest park on tuesday nights. Let's move this indoors, or at least to something covered, like the bridge where we have the jam.

If nobody replies to this I'll just be under the bridge tomorrow night around 8:30.

Thanks for signing me up. I'm a newish firedancer who's been using swords (sharpened) for about 20 years. I first fell in love with fire when my house burned down in Seattle - electrical fire - TV blew up. Have you ever seen what fire looks like when it covers the entire ceiling? I flows like water and grows like life. I Love it. Anyway nice to meet you.

Hello....this is becky. I lived in PDX about three years ago where i spun fire with many people and troops. Well I'm coming back in one week with my husband and daughter and we can't wait to get back in the scene. Between my hubby and i we spin devil sticks, diabolo, poi, staff, double staff ( a little), we also do eating, fleshing, and breathing, starting on juggling, and i am a stilt walker. We have performed w/ incendiary circus out of SLC at the burn, my hubby used to be a founding member, now he is a member in absentia. We are ready to go to a whole new level of performing professionally. I have spun w/ Charisse many, many times...and will be attending her b-day party as well as every fire jam that happens in the PDX metro area. Can't wait to meet or re-meet everyone. We have lots of ideas and creative energy to share. We'd love to play but what we are really interested in is troops who need permanent or on call performers, we'd love to audition or meet w/ you. We are definitely in the intermediate to advanced range on most of our toys, except maybe the staffs, but those have been hibernating for the winter and they are ready to spin around again!!!!!!! We are soooooooo excited to see what Portland has to offer!

Much Love,
Becky, Kurt (mouse), and Jude

Sunday SpinJams at the Hippodrome!

Hey y'all!
Come on down th the Hippodrome (315 SE 3rd Ave, between Oak and Pine) Sunday afternoons, starting December 16th for playtime with hula hoops, poi, staff, and assorted what-have-you. Bring your toys, bring a friend, bring music if you're inspired to do so. Bring a few bucks to throw in the donation box to help cover the cost of the space rental!

This is play and practice time open to everyone from the brand-spanking-new beginner to the seasoned pro. The goals are fun, practice, skill sharing and meeting new friends, not to mention getting off out pasty white butts during the long wet winter. I'll be bringing a whack of hoops to share, and I'm sure at least a few people will also bring extra toys, so come on out even if you don't have your own. During the first half hour or so, I'll be available for beginner insruction in hooping, and hopefully other teachers will join me, so don't let not knowing how stop you from coming.

Please message me if you have any questions!

Hope to see you all there!

fire marshal updates

so, i just wanted to share some info i've been getting from the fire marshal's office about venues for fire performance.

apparently, they are trying to start a master list of venues to make the permit process even easier.

this means that venues interested in having fire should contact the office, which will send an official to check the space to make sure it fulfills space requirements, sprinklers, etc. once they are ok'd they will be added to the list, which makes it easier for us as performers to get permits.

once this list is established, they are looking at ok-ing individual performers for a block of time (6 months?) at any of the venues on the list without getting a permit for each show.

this has not happened yet, but could happen soon with our help .

tell your venues to contact the office!

burning brightly & flying high,

fire jam, dec2 - outlook?

Hey, I heard there was fire jams in Portland, can anyone confirm this?
:P

ok.. it was a joke.. lighten up :). Anyway, I miss the ptown fire jams and am tossing around the idea of headin up there for the first sunday of December. Unfortunately, my life isn't as carefree these days as it has been for the last couple of years...

Sooo.. I need some more information to help me make my decision. Any of y'all have any plans of hittin this particular fire jam? What's been the feeling/vibe at the last several jams? I heard that things were pretty kicking a month or two ago, but that might have been in conjunction with Diversion. Any suggestions for me to go? Any for me to stay away? What time are things starting up these days?

Thanks for any thoughts shared, I appreciate it.

Peace,
- Sui

Hey tribe!
I am thinking about hosting a NON-fire, indoor spin jam on Sunday afternoons for a couple of hours not too far from the bridge burn location. It would cost me a bit of money but I know there are a lot of people out there who don't have indoor practice spaces during the colder months. Would anyone else out there be interested in attending something like that? If so, what times work well. I am most likely going to ask for a $5.00 donation to help pay for the space.
Feedback?

Hi Tribe!
I met a guy last night who's 13-year-old son is hell bent on learning fire eating. He's actually already doing it! He asked me if I knew anyone who could teach his son how to do it correctly and safely. I don't blow fire so I told him I would ask around.
He is willing to pay for lessons for himself and his son. Anyone interested? Please send me a personal message.
Thanks!

I'm going to be working in the Bay area for a couple of weeks and I was wounding if anyone could point me in the direction of something like fire jam, fire in the park or some place I could get together with other fire performers while I'm the Bay area. I would like to check out the fire performer scene while I'm down there

I'm looking for a cheap place to do metal fabrication (including welding, which eliminates a lot of possibilities). I just need the space for a few nights out of the month, can get my own tools and will clean up after myself. Could anyone recommend a place that's super-inexpensive? I've seen artist cooperatives in SF where everyone paid a little every month and you got to use the space to build for burningman or the like. I'm looking for something like that in portland.

filming at the fire jam

hi folks,

i've been in touch with a documentary film maker who wants to do a short on the fire jam and the community around the event.

Here is the log-line for the documentary -- tentatively titled "Fire in the Rain"

In Portland Oregon, a community of fire dancers meet and practice at an informal "Jam", held twice a month, under one of the bridges spanning the Willamette river. The film will document this meeting -- and similar events across the city -- with performance footage and interviews, for a glimpse into the art, and the lives of the artists in this community.

he will be entering this for competition at one or more festivals, as well as submitting it for broadcast on CurrentTV.

please come out in droves, in the rain, on sunday so we can showcase what the portland/oregon fire scene has to offer!

burning brightly and flying high,

I was approached by a man at Dante's on Sunday night wanting to know what my 'accelerant' was that I used. I wasn't sure what he meant but he finally told me that it was fuel. He also approached the other fire performer there and said the same thing to her. He didn't indentify himself as being part of the fire department but seemed very persistent that I answer his questions anyway. I know that recently Devil's Point was banned from doing fire even though they have safely had fire-dancers there for 6 years. They have also increased the audience distance from 10 to 15 feet which means we are not really able to make tips anymore since the audience can't get close enough to us to do so. I'm starting to feel like we might start to see some major changes happening, none of which would make performing any easier for us.
Had anybody else been effected by this recently? I know that the Devil's Point ban severely effected the income of the 2 performers who were there.

THE HIPPODROME Grand Opening

Hey gang.

It is with great pride and satisfaction that I announce the actual, irreversible Grand Opening of our new circus arts center, THE HIPPODROME.

In Summary: I'm doing the Grand Opening show November 17th. Starting that day, we'll have the space open during all days and some nights for classes, rehearsals, and performances. And we need the help of our amazing tech people to set up as much top-notch apparatus as we can squeeze in there, starting around October 20th.

If you've got a taste for details, read on.

What Creature and I have put together is a deal for a full-fledged circus venue, owned by my employer Mike Wolfson, housed in what was once the main room of the BComplex/MeowMeow/Loveland/Mercury Room/Euphoria. It's a 1000-capacity all-ages venue with a big stage, big PA system, 2o-foot ceiling, and big sexy exposed beams. This means that not only are we managing to avoid paying tens of thousands of dollars in renovation, insurance, and monthly rent; we are in fact pulling a salary to run the place. I'm the booker and Creature is the production manager.

So. There are a number of things we need to do to prepare:

I've got the Grand Opening scheduled for November 17th, with Batty's Hippodrome doing an 8-10:30 show and PURE Cirkus doing a much darker 11-12:30 show. Then I want to get a DJ in there (very likely Gypsy Sound System and Global Ruckus, who will already be playing next door).

The room will become available for all our nefarious plans circa October 20th. That means we'll have just under one month to set up whatever circus apparatus we want in the room for all our rehearsals, workshops, and performances. We have highly qualified friends who have offered to install first-rate professional aerial rigs, trapeze, and other hard-to-find trappings of the big top; though exactly what we'll have available when will be dictated both by constraints of time and budget.

Then, starting November 17th, the room will be available in the daytime and some evenings for rehearsals, classes, meetings, and performances. Creature will spearhead this operation in the same way I'll spearhead the show side of things, though both of us will surely be entangled in all of it. If you or anyone you know is looking for a place to practice/teach/study things like: aerial, juggling, fire spinning, dance, yoga, martial arts, tumbling, clowning, theater, or any other specialized skill within the broad definition of Circus; please let us know and we can find you a spot on the schedule.

Please do let me know if you can get in on this in any capacity. I'm sure we'll also need people to come and help us clean/build/decorate the place during that crucial 10/20 - 11/17 period as well, so even your totally unskilled friend can get in on the fun.

Looks like we have a fire permit.

Howver - I have had some stuff come up and I am (most likely) going to be out of town for Diversion.

The event needs someone to be responsible for setting up a fueling depot, arranging for safety, cutting off spinners who should not be spinning, and whatnot.

Please contact me asap.

Has anyone heard of a local fire breathing accident in the last couple of days? CNN had a short blurb on the news ticker but provided no details and I can't find any info with google news.

Fire junkies looking for a home in Portland!

Hello!!

My fiance Jeremy and I are looking for a home in Portland! We're so happy to be coming back to the land of green, and want to find a beautiful home to start up our weekly fire jams again. So, preferably, we'd like house with a large yard for fire dancing. We don't mind living with people, we have two beautiful jungle kittens, and love to cook healthy, mostly vegan food! Talk to the Eugene folks about our fire jams! We were so sad to leave that fire community... It was a whole new set of family. If you know of a house you'd like to go in on with us, or have a good-sized room available, please let me know!

Blessings and sparkly things,
Lyra and Jeremy

I want to come spin with all of you fun Portland burners, but I don't know exactly where/when the fire jam happens. I know it's under a bridge on certain Sunday nights, but that doesn't really narrow it down.

I've never lit up before and would like to, but I want to be around people who know what they're doing, not in my own backyard.

Thanks!

Fire Arts Campout Sept. 15th+16th

Sauvie Cove RV Park has RV spaces, Tent Spaces, and Yurts, they have a huge grassy area surrounded by the yurts, and every yurt has a fire pit :-) I have gotten the OK to hold a fire arts campout from the manager of the park. Thinking -potluck style, everyone bring plenty and we all share :-),Fire toy play as well as hanging out on the beach, several to choose from and farther down are nude beaches :-) swimming, windsurfing, kayaks and canoes, bring your water toys are all a possibility at this point in time :-) Currently looking for anyone that can make a flier and everyone to get the work out. This is going to be an awesome campout, lets all help build it :-)

Well, not really guerrilla, but....I'm coming into town for a couple days and will be spinning under the bridge on Thursday night. Due to fire restrictions where I now live (MT forests have been burning down for a couple months), I haven't been able to spin lit up in a long, long time. If you feel like joining me, come down and play!!

A few people have fire practice every Tuesday at around dark at sewallcrest park:

It's a much better learning environment than the bi-monthly fire jam, which is really just for people to show off. So please invite some friends, bring your toys, and have fun.

Hey Portal land fire Wizards!

Lauren Rose here... Portland Parks and recreation gave MY fire hoop away to someone at LAURELHURST. I'm sure glad they didn't throw it away and it IS in YOUR possession quite possibly! Will you give it back?

If you or someone you know fits into my story... please let me know! I would appreciate it SO much. My hooping deserves the fire it was given!

Aloha, and THANK YOU....

Hello all,
Starting tommorow I have invited several people that are interested in playing with couples moves and group choreography to come to the park in front of the restaurant/bar that I manage and play. My hopes are that there are several people out there that are interested in playing together and we can all play together with the hopes that a troupe will come out of it, however right now it is strictly play :-) Starting at 7:30 PM practicing and performing at sundown :-) Come on down and play, would be great to see ya.

Is there anyone out there that juggles?
Do you juggle torches?
Would you like to start passing torches?
I have found a nice park in East Vancouver that I like to juggle my torches at.
I would like to find someone who would join with me and start working on passing pins with and work our way up to passing torches.
If this sounds like you or someone that you know, lets get together and start passing.

Hi everyone - Soon I will be relocating to your fair city and Charisse suggested I send out a message saying hey. I met Cherry when she spent the winter in Salt Lake City and I expanded my fleshing, eating, and staff fire play to include poi through some much-appreciated classes she offered here. As I'm sure many of you may experience, I became *addicted* to fireplay and look forward to making new friends and fireplaymates in the northwest.

I just graduated with my JD, plan to take the Oregon Bar Exam in late July, and will be moving in early August. I'm excited to return to my roots in Oregon, join my sister and friends there, and explore this new chapter of my life. Any other attorney-types on this list?

On Wednesday I'm heading north for some interviews, to look into housing options, and attend EmrgNSee, which I hear is an event not to miss. Depending on when I leave EmrgNSee, perhaps I'll see some of you at the firejam on Sunday!

Feel free to offer suggestions, advice, cautions, etc.

Fire on!
Moss

Hi PDX tribe!
I wanted to let you all know that I will be moving back to Portland in August. I plan on staying a while this time =) I will probably be starting up classes again so I will keep you all posted.
Also, I am NOT going to Burning Man this year. It's my first year off in 7! if any of you have turned down gigs during that week because you will be at the burn, please consider me as an alternative as I know a lot of us will be out of town. I am really excited to come back and see all of you!

8:00- Movie begins- Beyond Black Rock
BURNING MAN: BEYOND BLACK ROCK goes behind the scenes
of a social revolution to explore the philosophy that
fuels it, the social contract that drives it, and the
transcendent experience that makes it a worldwide
cultural force. Granted unprecedented access to the
inner workings of the Burning Man organization, the
filmmakers spent 18 months with the founders,
organizers, artists and participants to document the
full complexity and diversity of the Burning Man
community. But, true to its title, the film goes
beyond the city they raise in the desert - revealing
the Burning Man's plans to bring its unique culture to
the rest of the world. BEYOND BLACK ROCK tells, for
the first time ever, the real story of Burning Man -
from the inside out. -Written by William Haskins

The PedalPalooza Solstice Ride is leaving from Watershed around 10:00pm (sunset). After that, there are a number of bands and other entertainments relating to the Clown Wedding.

Most of these people have seen fire performance only a few times - here's a chance to play with fire in front of an unjaded audience!

Would like 3-5 people to commit to about 30 min of play at approximately 10:30pm.

please email deadletter@speakeasy.net if you have the time! Be prepared to bring fuel and fire safety, one of the troupes here walked off with our extras!

firejam photo tip

The firejam location under I-5 is located on a concrete floor with square sections that measure 1.5 meters across. If your camera is like mine, it might have difficulty with autofocus under the firejam conditions. This may be due to the darkness, the luminescence of the flame, and a tendency to focus on secondary subjects, such as the lights of the city in the distance. An alternative is to manually focus the camera, using the grid on the floor to get a good estimate of the distance to the performer. Count the blocks between the camera and the performer and multiply by 1.5, and thats the distance in meters. :-)

Firestaff making session this Thursday

So I am doing a firestaff making event at my house for a few friends of mine. If you are interested in learning how to make and then own a fire staff you are welcome to come by and make one at my house. Let me know you are interested and I will buy the materials. We are meeting at my house this Thursday May 17th at 6pm until ??? to do the preliminary stuff to make a staff. I will order wick this week so within 2 weeks we can attach the wick so you can have a functioning firestaff. The ones I make are good for contact staff moves. I live in in SE Portland around 48th and SE Hawthorne. Send a message if you are interested in making a firestaff. The cost of the materials are around $30. So be expected to pay around that cost for the materials. You will be making the staves and I will be providing the tools/supervision. Brad
