Anyone have any experience taking antianxiety/depression meds?
After a year or so of outbursts, depression, and more I am finally thinking of going pharma despite my misgivings.
I am terrified of adjusting to them and getting the script right and also am afraid of withdrawls for myself and breastfeeding son should I stop taking them.
Any ideas appreciated.

Re: ssri meds
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 4:20 PMif you need them, you need them. Talk very frankly with your doctor about your nursing and also talk to your medical nursing support if you've got it. I found them to be super helpful and very sympathetic to any of my concerns. I didn't have to go on SSRI's but I did have to be on some other medications in the last two years. I think when you're looking for opinions here, you will find that what you are really looking for is personal validation to make a move for your own health and sanity, or you are hoping someone will convince you that you shouldn't take the medication. Only You and your doctor can know if you need them, and only you and your doctors can know what real effect this will have on your nursing. Taking care of yourself is vital. If you are not well and happy, how can you be the kind of mom you want to be? You are more than just a milk factory. Keep reminding yourself that, nursing is wonderful, but so are you!

Re: ssri meds
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 8:46 AMi nursed and took ssri's, i took a very low dose though. My doc thought i took such a low dose it could not have been helping me. I felt better with it than without it though.
I am no longer nursing, but still taking the SSRI's. Lexapro and Celexa have worked best for me. Wellbutrin made me feel violent.

Re: ssri meds
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 8:20 PMI haven't taken any anti-depression meds since I quit drinking in college...but, I have heard GREAT things about Lexapro and Celexa. A few of my nursing friends had to take something and I know that a few of them two one or both of those meds.
Talking with your doctor is vital and very important. You should also seek counseling and try to work through some of the issues that you may be up against. The medication can really help you see those things with a new pair of glasses so that you can focus more and have more courage to face those things.
Wishing you luck and much happiness. Depression is real and it's great you are doing something positive to help yourself. :) -

Re: ssri meds
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 1:15 PMNo matter what there will be people who think you weaned too early and those who think you did it too late. Screw them!
From what I've heard you need every ounce of your wits about you for toddlerhood. Why make the period that much harder for yourself? From what I remember too, you are in a new country and don't have the social support that ideally we all could have. Give yourself a break.
Now I'm in no way trying to belittle what you are going through, because I'm not in your head and body, but I doubt any of us are skating through mommy-hood with a valium-soaked June Cleaver smile. I'm sure a lot of us have lost our cool more often than we wish we did, and perhaps more often than we might even admit. Try to let go of the past, which I know is easier said than done.
Also, if your meds do require you to wean, then get your SO to help out and try to make it a transition rather than an abrupt change.

I'll keep you posted of decisions/changes.

ps Good memory, K. I did move to a new country one year ago. So hard to be a stranger in a big city while raising a toddler...
