Intro and a question :-)

Hi all!!
I'm glad to be eligible finally to be part of this tribe ;-). Logan Michael was born on his due date of 2/2 at 11:11PM :-). The birth definitely didn't go as planned...but that shows me for planning! :-)

Anyway, I have a question regarding postpartum bleeding. My first week of bleeding was pretty heavy. During the second week, it started taporing off...and then one day during that second week, I had a HUGE gush that scared the crap out of me. We went to the hospital and they did an exam and ultrasound and basically found nothing. So they sent me home with methergine. While I was on the methergine, the bleeding completely stopped. Then 1 day after the medication was done, the bleeding came back...but only for about an hour. Then it was gone for 3 more days...and it's been back ever since (for about a week now). But it comes back lightly for most of the day...by night its gone again.

So my question is...IS THIS NORMAL? I have no idea what to expect and the midwives couldn't really tell me what was going on either. I'm just dying for this bleeding to stop so that I can start exercising again and not worry about having another pseudo-hemorraging attack.

I bled on and off for almost 7 weeks. Some days were way heavier than others. Sometimes I thought it was done and then I'd be surprised by a big gush.

Oooh boy! 7 weeks????? So...would you say that it would be ok to do some light exercising? I'm SO bored sitting on my butt! All I do all day is nurse and change diapers. I'm dying for some bellydancing!

I went on for about 8 weeks and then had a 2 week break just in time for a 2 week "period" of sorts....here I am four months later and still not totally back to normal! UGH

As for excercise I was told to wait at least 6 weeks and if I was still bleeding a good idea to wait till that stops and then give it a week....

I bled for the first 2-3 weeks, then it was just pinkish discharge (lochea) more annoying than anything. As far as the meds interrupting your deal, Im not quite sure. So a total of about 5-6 weeks.

P.S. if youre into disposable pads...always ultra thin overnights or supers are THE best.

Those disposable underwear things from the hospital are awesome too. I just kept washing them and reusing them. I would hold off on the excercising thing for a little bit though. I know it can seem like an eternity since you have danced or done anything active but believe me it goes by FAST!! Just enjoy every minute of your new baby!!

Yes I would second holding off on excercise for a bit....I mean I think everyone makes that mistake where you start feeling better and over do it and then you get that "I am gonna die" pain thing starting as your body tells you it was just too much!

I was told to EXPECT an increase in bleeding around 2 wks pp. They explained it as "an adjustment of the uterus and the scar tissue" or someting. Sure enough, it happened to me.

Really??? I wish someone would've told me that! My midwives were all worried because at 2 weeks I had bled so much. Ah well...live and learn. Thanks for letting me know!

I bled for about 4 weeks and then it tapered off. My doc gave me the green light to do some light exercising (walking and light yoga) at 3 weeks, but said not to start bellydancing again until 6 weeks. Your mileage may vary..

i bled for what seemed like 2 months! it was steady for 4 weeks and then there was a lull, so i thought i was in the clear. 2 weeks later i started bleeding again and i thought, "whoa, am i having a period ALREADY?! i'm breastfeeding!" the color was super bright red, too, and that totally scared me. when i called the doc she said sometimes people take a break in the lochia shedding and then it will come back. i went another 2 weeks and then finally it was all over and i didn't have a period until the babe was 5 months old.

not to be debbie downer, but for me it was SUCH a drag to bleed and bleed and bleed. it was yet another thing that no one ever tells you about being pregnant and having a baby. i also especially loathed it because i have a definite aversion to pads. it makes me think of the humiliating days of middle school where i had what felt like a mattress between my legs and i thought EVERYONE knew i was having a period, not to mention feeling totally stressed out about potential leaks... but what a difference 20 years can make in feminine hygeine technology. i absolutely LOVED the always pads. i used them when my water broke and i was really pissed when i got to the hospital and they had me walking around in their princess and the pea pads! as soon as i had a chance i changed to the always ones i brought from home.

Those damn hospital, thick as a matress pads are the worst!!!

        UGH!

Yes the whole bleeding FOREVER was pretty freaky....no one tells you it seems like every period you skipped while you are pregnant comes back at you after giving birth!!!! My partner use to be really freaked out about buying things like pads, etc but you know I bled long enough he was actually fine with it lol....he even got the right brand, etc....

Not only were the hospital pads thick, they were also as large as my torso! I couldn't believe it when I saw them for the first time! And, when I could finally use the "smaller" ones I was so relieved! And those were the size of a man's arm!

I am so glad I found this thread.

I bled for two weeks and it started to taper. Even became like the yellowish clear color.

Then...all of a sudden at 3.5 weeks I am bleeding again. SO ANNOYING.

And like Lola...I HATE PADS. HATE. If I don't get it in my undies the right way and they feel weird at all I freak out. I cried the other night because I was so annoyed with having to wear them and even go out and buy more! GAH.

Well, I am glad it's not anything bad. It's very light..but steady all day...kinda tapers off in the evening.

I have a friend who never wears underwear, but she had to go out and buy a whole slew of them for the post-partum bleeding, since you can't put in a tampon. She hated that part! (Oh, it's not me...REALLY!)

I bled on and off for longer than 6 weeks...definitely got worse when I was doing too much and had to rest more. Eventually you know your body is totally healed when you completely stop bleeding.

Congratulations on your new little one!!! How exciting!!!! And **Welcome, welcome**

My Mid-wife told me that if my bleeding were to increase all of a sudden, to take that as a sign that I need to take it easier on myself. DO allow yourself time to heal, take lots of naps too!
