Hey Mamas, we have been dealing with eczema for months now. Sometimes it gets a little better but after a few trips to places with softer water I noticed that his skin seems to improve whenever the water is softer. LA has terrible hard water and I think it is a main culprit in his dry, irritated skin issues. Anyone know of a natural way to soften my son's bath water?

Re: Water softner for skin?
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 7:23 AMSorry, Yooni. I feel for you, we've got the same problem here with skin but our water is soft and i don't know what to do to change it. I can tell you what we've done to help:
warm not hot baths, throw in some oatmeal and baking soda. I throw in Calendula flowers when i have them (btw- all bagged so it doesn't make a huge mess with the 3,746,289 toys that live in the tub).
Afterwards patting baby down gently, leaving a little water on the skin
immediately slathering with a thick cream- i got aveeno and really like it but it has petroleum and some folks don't like using it.
i'd meant to hunt down some homeopathic remedies but this worked well enough i never did.
Hope Ewan gets better!

Re: Water softner for skin?
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 9:06 AMfor a little while, between 4 and 15 months, abigail had two obscenely dry patches on her leg ... i never could imagine what they were from, or how to make them disappear, until one day in a warm bath i decided to *ever so gently* scrub the spots with a loofah and slather her legs with palmer's cocoa butter.
they were gone within a week.
i think i only loofah'd the spot one more time, but it was the cocoa butter that really helped. i like to use it like car wax : after bath, while still wet, then a bit of a spray down and pat dry.

Re: Water softner for skin?
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 9:19 AMThanks mamas, I will maybe give the calendula herbs and/or cocoa butter a try. We've tried oatmeal baths and baking soda and have used Weleda Calendula soap, California Baby skin cream as well as Baby Bliss and several other creams including Aveeno and Eucerin. They all seem to help somewhat but not completely. The itching and scratching is always at night. I think my poor son would probably sleep through the night if it weren't for his itchy skin. -

Re: Water softner for skin?
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 9:19 PMcould it possible be a food allergy/intolerence? i know it is hard to find food allergies in children but it may be worth trying to figure it out. also, ingesting healthy fats can do wonders for the skin (avocado, flax oil)
i dont know the age of your child or what food stage they are at but diet may be the answer???
hope you figure something out that works! :) -

Re: Water softner for skin?
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 9:33 PMHe is 19 months old. At this point we have not been able to pin down any particular food allergy triggers. Not for lack of trying though. It hasn't mattered how much food I've cut out or added (yeah we've tried avocado etc) the only times I think I have noticed a real significant change has been when we were in places with softer water. From what I have found looking up water softners we might have to invest in a system that attaches to the pipes or something. -

Re: Water softner for skin?
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 9:44 PMyuni, I know you've been dealing with this for a LONG time, and I'm so sorry for you and your family. We've dealt with eczema issues as well, though not to the extent you have, and for now, they seem to be cleared up *crosses fingers*
I don't know of any natural ways to soften your water - I only know of the whole-house systems, most of which use some kind of salt pellets to soften the water. We have terribly hard water here as well, and were very excited when we found out this house had a water softener system already when we bought it. Then we found out it hadn't been serviced in like 10 years, and didn't work, and in fact leaked and flooded our garage...but I digress. There are a jillion different systems, and I know you to be the researching type to find the right one for you...I just wanted to wish you luck and let you know I'm thinking of you. By the way, the one we had hooked up to the house water in our garage where the main pipe feeds into the house - right next to the water heater. -

Re: Water softner for skin?
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 10:36 PMThanks Jeanne. Yes, it has been going on forever! I seriously feel like we have tried everything but I still hope there is something out there that might help. I know some kids just outgrow it after a while. I really hope that will the case for him.
