speaking of birth control pills...

(this is probably a question for lizzer, our resident bc expert, but in case anyone else down the line needs the info i thought i'd post to all)

i'm taking the mini-pill and i accidentally forgot to take it one day. i doubled up the next day but i'm not sure if this was the right thing to do. since i did that i would assume that it's not safe to engage in any activity w/o using a backup method for a while. is that right? and if so, for how long?

AND

what is the proper thing to do when you miss a dose of the mini-pill?

    I'm not sure.
BUT, beware of the mini-pill if you are nursing...

I took it after having Emma at about 5 months PP, and about 6 weeks later, my milk dried up.

The pediatrician was pissed at my OB for not telling me that might happen. Emma lost weight and had to have formula supplementation. She ended up weaning much earlier than I had wished. (7 months)

I guess it's about 50/50 on who does and does not have a reaction to the hormones in that way. If you have taken the mini-pill before and had no trouble, that's a good sign. Most of my friends take it and have no problems at all. I'm JEALOUS!

:( I guess it's condomland for me until I'm done nursing. PHOOEY!

Hey, Snazzy Gina...have you ever considered an IUD like Paragard? No hormones. Pregnancy protection for 10-12 years.

The non-hormonal iuds don't prevent pregnancy, they just prevent implantation. I'm not sure if that is okay with me. I'm not a big pro life fanatic, but I *am* married to a man, that I like the idea of having a baby with, and if I were to get pregnant again, I'd rather keep it. This is all separate from using actual birth control that prevents pregnancy in the first place, which for whatever reason, doesn't freak me out in the slightest.

But, the pill has been known to make me neurotic, crazy, fat, bloated, and quite irrational.

So, natural is the best for me, I think.

And, we are planning on having one more kiddo...

I'm more of a pro-lifer, but have made an exception for birth control.

And the reason birth control is an "exception" in my "pro-life" rule-book is because one of the ways it keeps you from getting pregnant is to prevent implantation, and I believe that's somewhat equivalent to an abortion. It's the difference to whether the fertilized egg is removed from the body before or after implantation.

I read about it in a physicians handbook on drugs. Shoot, what's one of those things called? Yikes. Mommy-brain or just losing my memory as I'm almost 40?

Oh, yeah. A PDR: Physicians Desk Reference.

Anyway, the pill prevents pregnancy in 3 ways:
          1. Preventing ovulation,
          2. Thickening up the mucous to make it hard for the sperm to make any headway, and if all else fails,
          3. Preventing implantation of the fertilized egg.

However, it's estimated that, when we're trying to get pregnant, about 1/3rd of our fertilized eggs fail to implant. There hasn't been a scientific study, to my knowledge, so take that information with a grain of salt.

So, our own bodies may disallow implantation for reasons we don't understand, when we are trying to get pregnant, or not trying to prevent getting pregnant.

But if we're on the pill, we're probably having less incidence of fertilized eggs not implanting than when we're not on the pill. I think. Well, anyway, that's how I justified staying on the pill after I realized that the 3rd way it keeps us from getting pregnant is to prevent the fertilized egg from implanting... the fact that our bodies often naturally don't allow a fertilized egg to implant.

Yeah, I'm cutting corners on my morals. I didn't realize that the pill prevents implantation until I'd been on the pill for 10 years or so. :P Put me into shock.

So, really want to get my tubes tied the minute I'm SURE my husband doesn't want any more kids.

However, at month 5, I'm already thinking more kids would be cool, LOL. :)

I'm currently on the mini-pill while breast feeding. And I'm at 5 months, but still producing. But yeah, having a hard time sometimes keeping up the milk. But not sure if it's a mini-pill thing or not.

I find drinking some soy milk just before a feeding seems to help. That may be psychological, though.

          Wow... I'm babbling. :)

      wow, good to know gina...

not to make you regret telling me that or anything, but now i am really concerned about keeping up my supply on the mini-pill. i was not sold on it in the first place and hearing this makes me even less into it. i plan on calling my CNM tomorrow and discussing this with her, but part of me just wants to throw the rest of them away and not look back. if it weren't for the fact that 2 kids under 2 was such a challenge (and the thought of having a 3rd anytime soon just makes me want to eat the barrel of a loaded shotgun), i would not have even asked for the scrip. anyway, thanks for the info, i appreciate it.

I got the Mirena IUD at my post-partum visit and had no reduction in my milk suppy. Just sayin'.

I had an appointment with my GYN Friday and we discussed the Mirena IUD and she told me Insurance wouldn't cover it and it's $900, is this really TRUE?
          • Some insurances don't cover all birth control options. It's pretty common for them to not cover IUDs. I'd like to think it's because so many doctors don't insert them, so it sort of falls under the radar, because I try not to get cranky over all the limitations placed on women's reproductive choices. I won't go off on a rant here, though.

Call your local Planned Parenthood (or other women's health center that you prefer) and ask what their sliding scale is. I know that the device alone costs me close to $300 to purchase (I manage a clinic), so that doesn't include all those extra fees for staff, instruments, the room, overhead, etc.
            • Cristy- i got the non-hormonal IUD (paraguard) at a time when i had no insurance, and with Planned Parenthood's sliding scale fees i actually paid a big fat $0. You may not be as destitute as we were at the time, but either way- they have great sliding scale payments, great choices (including the mirena iud), and wonderful staff- i can't ay enough good things about them.

Oh, and they also have really long sit-around-the-reception-area waits. Just goes with the terrritory.

Also, Lola for what it's worth, i've never heard of a momma having a drop in their supply with an iud, copper or progesterone. Ya just gotta make a decision between 1) spot bleeding for roughly 6-8 months (Mirena) or 2) heavier flow periods (Copper)

According to everything I know, you only need to use condoms as a back-up for 48 hours (since you only missed one pill).

    www.plannedparenthood.org/healt...69.htm
(Scroll toward the bottom for info on the mini-pill)

I also encourage women to have a pack of Plan B on hand in case the condom breaks, a pill is missed, a diaphragm is left in the nightstand drawer, whatever. If you don't know where you can get it near you, call 1-888-NOT2LATE, or your friendly neighborhood Planned Parenthood. It's available over the counter now for women over 18, also.
