help

i posted about this in the bf'ing tribe so sorry for the x-post but i am desperate and it's too late in the day for me to call the doc's office.

my allergies have started totally kicking my ass -- swollen, scratchy throat and super itchy eyes so far.... i really want to take something but i don't know what is safe while nursing. i definitely don't want to fuck with my milk supply. all i've been able to find in the archives on the bf'ing tribe is homeopathic stuff and i am looking for something more readily available as there is one health food store down here and it doesn't have much.

anyone know of any OTC allergy remedies that are safe while bf'ing?

Ask for the Sudafed that they keep behind the counter at the pharmacy. You'll have to show ID for it (or your DH will), just in case you are going to use it to try to make meth. ;)

Oh, crap...that's not for allergies. I've been told that Claritin is okay to use. It's OTC these days, and the generic is just as good...it's called Loratadine.

Actually, if you take chlor-tabs or chlortrimetron (sp? - the active ingredient is chlorpheneramine - they are like $2.38 for the equate brand at walmart) with the blue 12 hour sudafed behind the counter it acts like allegra-D but is way super cheaper. If you don't need the decongestant like I do, just take the chlor whatevers.

Benadryl is also safe. So is claritin and the knockoffs. I always go generic with allergy meds and they work fine. I took all of the above at some point while pregnant and bf'ing trying to find the one that would work right then...

Benadryl/ diphenhydramine is safe. Only downside with any of these is that they're *all* anti-cholenergics. What dries up your snot will eventually dry up your milk. It's not a problem if you're taking it for a weekend, but if you take it consistently through allergy season you will see a gradual reduction in in your breastmilk, and DJ won't like that.

Take whatever you can find at the drugstore now so you're not miserable, but if you have to take it long term, find the right homeopathic remedy.

As a side note, I take daily antihistamines and had no effect on my milk supply, though I know some people do have trouble with it.

I agree that a homeopathic remedy would be best. OTC meds are suppressive and homeopathic remedies are not. I've used Nelson's brand remedy called aller-away and it worked well. I've had probs with claritin and loratidine because they eventually stopped working and I was in misery. My nose ran 24 hrs straight and I could hardly keep my eyes open they were so runny and itchy. That's the problem with suppressing symptons......they catch up to you.

              good luck.

one more thing.......When my allergies are full blown, I use a neti pot. It doesn't provide lasting relief but takes the edge off for a little while.
allergies are awful....my midwife said claritin is ok but that was while I was pregnant and don't know if its ok while bfing

    hey lo...
i've been taking homeopathics for years. try those. i can't recommend a particular remedy or brand, but a quick browse of the section will help you find the remedy or blend to address your particular symptoms.

duh... only skimmed your OP. you've had trouble with the local selection... well, boiron's histaminum hydrochloricum is good for general allergic reactions & worked really well for me last year (not so much this year). i've also taken boiron's galphimia glauca specifically for hay fever. now i'm on boiron's "sabadil" allergy blend.

you can buy them online & shipping shouldn't be too much.

        <------ another fan of boiron!

i like cold calm and sinus whateveritscalled. the honey cough is also kick-ass, but you prolly don't need that now.

I was told that I could take Benadryl. And ever since I found that out, I have been just fine. Milk supply is fine and Addie has shown no ill effects..
