Time to pick it up a little bit over here in the ol' Probablpoly Tribe. I had a little facial slap over the holidays that reminded me how much spiritual education matters.
In a casual conversation Mrs. Karl had with my sister in law, a person who I must point out is a charming and generous individual, it came to light that she was boycotting the new motion picture "The Golden Compass". Since Mrs. Karl knows that my three boisterous nephews would love to see an epic science fantasy adventure, she had to dig deeper.
"Have you seen it yourself?" , "Of course not."
"Have you read the books its is based on?" , "No."
"Do you know what the story is about?" , "Not really."
"Why won't you take them to see it then?" , "Well I received an e-mail saying that the director was an atheist and that the movie was an anti-Christian attack."
"Who sent you the e-mail?", "I don't know."
"You must know who sent it." , "No, I mean, their name was on it, but I don't know who that person is."
"Then why are you listening to their opinion?", "Well they must have gotten my name off of the church mailing list, so it must be someone from our church."
Whereupon Mrs. Karl did her best to convince my sister in law that the Devil was not working his will through New Line Cinema and that my nephews would enjoy the movie every bit as much as they did, "Star Wars", "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Chronicles of Narnia".
Now, I do not have any objection to any person holding beliefs that I do not happen to hold as well. In fact, I like it. It makes the Life Soup tastier. But when did Believing and Thinking become mutually exclusive? Following a course of action without concious awareness is not following your Beliefs, it is a reflex. It is closer to barffing when you stick a finger down your throat than it is to following the tenets of your chosen Religious Brand.
Even if one should choose the sad, but viable life-style of not thinking (commonly achieved through alcoholism, drug addiction, or surfing). Allowing someone else to control your thoughts, steps beyond the regrettable into the criminal. In a world where an ordinary Orange County housewife, can so easily be co-opted into mindless obedience, there is something Evil afoot. There is an insideous campaign of corruption being waged against the human mind. It is an attempt to move for and Age of Enlightenment into an Age of Obedience.
Human beings are capable of beautiful things, but they have to Choose to do them.

cogito, ergo sum
Thu, December 27, 2007 - 9:20 PM1st of all, some books & movies are written as (allegorical) means to convey principles... you cited good examples... lewis, tolkien, l'engle, bach, rand, herbert, twain, salinger, heinlein... to name a few. some of these put principle before character & before story such that it can cause either one of 2 nasty "c" words: censorship or cults.
those 2 don't play well together. they usually don't play well w/ anyone outside themselves, ever.
cultures thrive tho even w/in these walls. sometimes those cultures exist w/in our own. -we're not exempt when we separate "us" & "them."
i'm challenging this here b/c it's come up in conversation alot lately & maybe that's b/c the burner scene in particular is seeing more club culture emerging on the scene, mostly i guess b/c wolfie has a pretty vast following as a kick-ass producer.
lest we forget... community is a place where we belong. it's big enough to grow. growing makes us bigger.
-that's on the culture-front. specifically to your point karl & in this particular situation, it sounds like what's happening is religion. not to be confused w/ faith. FAITH is believing w/o thinking. by definition, a belief system is a code by which you live your life which is largely influenced by your experience, which is colored by memory which affects your emotions which formulates thought patterns/triggers/patterns. we all have faith... just by being alive. we just believe different things. and sometimes, people allow their faith to cloud their judgment. -ironically, that's usually called being "judgmental."
the age of enlightenment is past. i'm going to one-up you on what this history is spelling & that is: the age of apathy.
let US not let history define us.
cogito, ergo sum... it's time for revolution, people.

Re: cogito, ergo sum
Fri, December 28, 2007 - 7:17 AMI think you are going to win the epoc name game.
Age of Apathy, not only has that slick assonance thing going for it, (Poets; always finding the better word) but it won't evoke the same knee jerk opposition in folks when they are identifying with it. Nobody wants to be referred to as "obedient", but they are likely to let "apathy" slide by with a shrug.
I'm going to pick at your "FAITH is believing w/o thinking." statement, because I can never resist.
I would say that "Faith" is believing without Proof (or even the idea that Proof is relevant.)
Faith can stand up to a great deal of Thinking, it even invites it, theological colleges and monastaries are built upon examining Faith.
Dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum

Fri, December 28, 2007 - 8:37 AMi am not shrugging.
let me think about this faith thing a little while longer... -

Re: cogito, ergo sum
Fri, December 28, 2007 - 8:53 AMI know you are not shrugging, and it matters a great deal. More in The Age of Apathy than ever.
Let me get one of my old friends to weigh in on it.

Inquiring Minds want to Know
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 11:31 AMk, so i've been thinking...
faith is Knowing. -the kind of sustainable Knowledge that begins & carries its' journey through testing. only @ a crossroads, would you be persuaded to choose. faith is choosing... in fact, belief systems are the sum total of our actions. the AMAZING & humbling part is that even people of divergent faiths exude kindness or compassion (or hatred & violence depending)... the win-win is in finding the areas where we overlap... finding our common ground.
when we don't believe something, that doesn't make it not so. but believing it, does. -the easiest analogy is a hallucination. you can see something that no one else sees & they can call you "delusional" or what-not, but the bottom line is that to YOU, it exists. if it exists in your mind, then it exists. period. -until it doesn''t.
some folks quipp that everything happens for a reason. -i think that's a really great example of the universal pat answers in order to make people feel better. (as if that were possible.) it's not our job to know why everything is happening... but it IS our job to accept responsibility for your part in it... & i dare say this is the very reason people cling to pat-anythings... to avoid personal responsibility.
i say: embrace the mystery. i've found that over the years, the more i open up, the more there is to Know. -
