64 years ago, a hero fought at Normandy – the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien. On June 17, she literally gets to toot her own horn by playing host to the premiere of the new History International Channel documentary, “Hero Ships: SS Jeremiah O’Brien.” The event, starting with a 5:30pm reception hosted by Brandy Ho’s Restaurant, will include tours of the WWII ship including her vintage engine room (featured in the film Titanic) and culminate with a screening of the film.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and may be ordered by phoning (415) 544-0100 or online at www.ssjeremiahobrien.org. Seating is limited.

The screening will take place onboard the O’Brien, home to the National Liberty Ship Memorial at San Francisco’s Pier 45 in Fisherman’s Wharf. The ship will be moored at dockside for this event.

“Hero Ships” is a stirring and historic 13-part series about the most prestigious vessels in US Naval history. Presented in high-definition, with gripping interviews from the veterans who served on their decks, each Hero Ships episode shows the evolution of one ship and retraces the most dramatic moments from her history. After WWII, the ships were forgotten by their country and were destined for sale or destruction before veterans’ groups stepped in to save them.

Now, such hero ships as the O’Brien are moored in some of the nation’s biggest cities as floating museums and gateways to a time when gray-skinned battlewagons prowled our imaginations. During World War II, 2,751 Liberty Ships, constructed at 18 US ship yards, were meant to be built quicker than German U-Boats could sink them. “Built by the mile and chopped off by the yard,” as President Roosevelt said, they were to form a “bridge of ships” across the Atlantic. Winston Churchill wrote, “Without the supply column of Liberty Ships that endlessly plowed the seas between America and England, the war would have been lost.”

Of the 13 naval vessels featured in the Hero Ships series, the O’Brien is the world’s oldest, fully functional and most historically accurate World War II vessel still in Coast Guard-approved operation.

Tuesday, June 17, 5:30 reception followed by screening at 7:30
Pier 45
Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and may be ordered by phoning (415) 544-0100 or online at www.ssjeremiahobrien.org.

"Under the proposed legislation - to be introduced by Supervisor Sophie Maxwell at Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting - it would be illegal to loiter within 10 feet of a club for more than three minutes between the hours of 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.

People smoking or waiting for a bus or taxi would be exempted, and police would have to issue a warning before citing a loiterer.

The legislation also would require promoters who hold two or more events at nightclubs within any given year to obtain a permit.

As it is now, the mayor said, "fly-by-night" promoters come and go without anybody keeping track of them. Permits would enable the Police Department and other city agencies to know who is responsible for an event in the case of a security breach or health violation."

The very first thing in the description above says-
***PLEASE keep actual event promotions in the event listings. Keep the discussion area for discussions only. THANKS!***

However, I still see the occasional promotion in the discussion area. As this is a tribe of event promoters, and the focus is on discussion, if everyone were to "promote" their event in the discussion area, the actual discussion would be lost!! I'm going to delete all the old postings of this kind today without tracking who posted them.
********** Going forward, these postings will be immediately deleted and repeat offenders could possibly find themselves banned. ***************

However, I do understand that as promoters, it is nice to know what is going on so you can plan your flyering campaign, as well as schedule around other events.
In the MV galleries tribe they have one blanket post per week, where all the events of that week can be posted within that thread. That way the word can get out in the discussion list, without spamming the list with a bunch of individual posts. I propose that we have a blanket posting for events for each MONTH. Feel free to list any and all events these threads! Full write-ups ok! If I have not already started a thread for the month of your event, feel free to start it yourself- title it "(month) events!" Feel free to mention if you are willing to do guestlist exchange/club comp and how you wnat that arranged.

That all being said, there are some very acceptable reasons for letting your fellow promoters know about an event(s) in its own post without spamming this list.
1) you are looking to fill positions (paid or volunteer).
2) you are looking for collaborators
3) you want feedback on your write-up before releasing it to "the public".
3) any other advise being asked

If you have any questions, please ask!!!

I have had problems with spammers wanting in, so I need to make sure that what you have is not spam material, but would be a real benefit to the promoters here! :)

I have been meaning to post this for awhile. I thought this was pretty good.

Booking a Show 101
by Matt Fanale
original link here-
http://not-eurotic.livejournal.com/766565.html

_____________________________________________________________________________________________
Okay, I've kinda covered this territory before, but here's some stuff to think about if you want to book a show (and it's all just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth):

1) The asking guarantee is the BEST case scenario.

That means if you know the show will bring a huge amount of people, you can cover the guarantee PLUS hospitality PLUS any additional tech requirements PLUS sound PLUS incidentals (and believe me, unexpected stuff can add up), THEN say "that's great-- here Caustic, have $100,000,000!")

Otherwise, figure out what works for you as a promoter and for your scene size and make an offer. Backend percentage deals are a beautiful thing and used frequently. A backend percentage deal is simple-- after you recoup ALL of your expenses the band gets a chunk of the door. This generally keeps both the band and promoter happy, as if the band thinks they deserve more and you think it might but you don't want to possibly lose your ass it allows the chance for a lot more money without as much investment on your part. I've personally had a few shows where the band actually ended up making more than their asking price because of this, so win-win.

Guarantees are good also in that the band knows they'll be coming out with a set amount and can figure it into their budget. Again though, know what you can handle. There's NOTHING more unprofessional than promising something, signing a contract, and then screwing a band over because you thought it would do better. Plus you could get sued. You took the risk-- know the consequences. Most people do not make money on shows as a promoter in this or most other scenes. It's a fact. Minimize loss by being smart, and if the band won't accept your offer it may be for the best. Don't let your ego cost you money.

2) Figure in ALL costs.

I mentioned it in the first bit but it can't be stressed enough. Forgetting something that you either promised a band (contractually or not) or that is vital to pulling the show off (like, y'know, paying a sound person) can add a LOT to the costs in some cases, and nickel and dime shit like water for the bands or even photocopied fliers and tape can add up pretty quickly. You want to do a good job. You want everyone happy so you'll look cool and have other bands think that East Fuck, Louisiana is a hotbed of industrial/goth/polka. Make sure to figure in for this so you don't end up losing money on a show:

a. Guarantees for the bands
b. Hotel/crashpad accomodations
c. Sound
d. Hospitality (food, beer, water, a macaroni portrait of The Hoff)
e. Fliers/advertising
f. DJ
e. Guestlist (this adds up really quickly)
g. Additional lighting/sound rental requirements
h. Possible venue rental/staff charges

Making an actual budget helps. Seriously. I've seen people nearly sell out shows and still lose money. Be smart and honest with yourself on actual costs and you'll be fine.

Also, be aware that you should probably have enough money before the doors even open to cover your butt in case something goes wrong or, worst worst case scenario, nobody shows at all. You're still responsible for the guarantee.

3) Communicate!

It should be obvious, but a lot of people don't realize that communication, duh, makes things run smoothly. Make sure as many details are covered with all parties involved in the show: The bands (and ALL of them, meaning OPENING bands), the venue, the DJs, your street team, the hotel-- whoever. Obviously some people only need to know certain things, but it's important that everyone be on the same page for the show to succeed, plus it keeps things calm. It's a little thing, but it means a lot to a band that they can get easily ahold of you and to confirm that everything's cool. It's the little things, but when you're on the road and heading to a place you've never been it's good to know there's a contact available to help with whatever.

4) Be professional

If a restaurant is slow you don't want the owner to come whine to you about it when you're eating, so use the same philosophy and always try and be upbeat regardless if a show is doing well or not. Appreciate everyone and be a nice host. That's all. Pretty simple. Remember: You're the promoter, and if people chose not to show you didn't do your job. No blaming or making people who did pay feel guilty. Not every show is a rousing success, but give love to the crowd as they're the supporters of what you do and make or break a show.

So that's it. I'm sure there's a few nuances I didn't cover, but all in all follow those basic rules, have a good time and show everyone a good time and you'll be on the right track.

(and per usual with this crap, x-post away if you're so inclined-- just give credit:))

DECADE - The DJ Dance Club
Every hour a different decade!
Now on the 2nd Friday of the month

Friday, January 12th, 2007
"WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?" NIGHT
Six Degrees of Songs – Connected in Some Way
Play "What’s the Connection" and win prizes!
Two rounds starting at 10pm

9-10pm
The 1970's
DJ Skip (New Wave City) gets all Glamed up with some Bowie, some T. Rex, and maybe a dash of Roxy Music, and weaves it all together for a connected picture of 70’s music like some giant connect-the-dots portrait of Richard Nixon. Scary, and a little bad too.

10-11pm
The 1980's
DJ Candy (DECADE) starts the "What’s the Connection" contest off with a set that may include "Candy Girl" – New Edition, "Candy" – Iggy Pop, "I Want Candy" – Bow Wow Wow and still more sweet treats from the most delicious DJ around. Four out of five dentists recommend DJ Candy for their patients who eat DJ’s.

11-12am
The 1990’s
Tomas Diablo (Strangelove, Rock This Town) continues with round two of the contest and sends you on a connected song journey through the 90’s with songs like "Pump Up the Jam" and "Pump Up the Volume". Not sure if Tomas will be dressed like Hans or Franz, but it sounds like he’s here to Pump! [handclap] You Up! Hear me now and believe me later...

12-1am
The 1980's
DJ Skip (New Wave City) spins your favorite 80’s connected songs. See if you can follow the links from Depeche Mode to Yaz to Erasure to The Cure to Duran Duran and on and on. Will he Go! or Don’t Go? Either way, as long as you Wake Me Up Before You Go Go ‘cause I’ll need a ride home at the end of the night after collapsing from dancing too hard to this set.

1am-2am
The 2000’s
DJ Candy (DECADE) spins the newest Indie, Pop, Electronica and remixes in what has quickly become a don’t-miss-this-final-set tradition that has been packing the dance floor at every event. Somehow the word must have gotten out because people are showing up just for this set. Find out what all the fuss is about.
What are the characteristics of a really great event website?

There are several event listing websites out there, but they all seem to have major problems.

Tribe is moderately good- but events are very hard to search and when found are hard to read. Also moderately hard to post.

Craigslist is really easy to search, easy to add, but no categories, no date ranges, no prior filtering.

myspace is awful, hard to add, hard to search.

sfstation is brutally difficult to add, very hard to search, too many paid ads.

sfbg very hard and clumbsy to add.

the wave, hard to add, bad sortign and selecting.

laughing squid wants only alternative stuff.

So there was an event there yesterday (Friday) that I went to. I saw and have heard of a lot of terrible things that security did.

For instance:

The promoter who ran last nights show said:
" i just found out that the security there broke my friends friend's clavicale after slamming him into the door.

my co workers 90lb wife was picked up / choked by security.

both are pressing charges.

i would not be surprised if the blue cube gets shut down. and well deserved if you ask me."

AND

"they even booted our door person who had just worked for 5hrs striaght w/ no break for attempting to call the police to file a police report after witnessing their security ganging up on some guy outfront who DEFINITELY DIDNT deserve getting KICKED IN THE HEAD while crouched in the fetal position! REGARDLESS of what he did!!! my partner straight up almost cried in my arms after she told me what she witnessed."

Another guy I know explains:

"But as far as high strung security, I've never seen a crew in my life like that. Working security, I've worked with security like that, they work 1 show then never again. I was standing there when they pulled the guy out. Dropped him to the ground then 3 of them one on each arm and one on his legs ran him out through the door then on the ground. I followed this cause he was obviously in no position to do anything. When I walked up to security to ask what had happened, cause I was standing there and there was no reason for what they did, I was pushed back against the bar by one of the guards. At this point I was very hot as all I did was ask a question and he agressivly pushed me. In no way did they act anything close to "Professional" any time last night. In peoples faces telling women "FUCK YOU, THATS THE WAY IT IS" repeatedly. Guess what...thats not the way it is."

There's an entire thread on a bulletin board discussing the problems with the security there. I've personally never had this problem at the Blue Cube before but I haven't been there many times. So my question to you all is: Does this happen often there? Should promoters boycott this venue until security can treat their patrons with respect?

For my little club DECADE that happens on the first Friday of every month. My partner Candy and I are having our 1-Year Anniversary Party in March. We have in our promoting budget one ad in the local free papers (SF Weekly, Guardian). The papers come out every Wednesday.

Question 1. When do you think people read these papers?
As a promoter, I always read them on Wed. or Thur. to see what's happening.

Question 2 (which relates to question 1). If you're only running one ad, would you run it on the Wed. three days before your event, hoping that people read it before the weekend and think, "Yeah, I'm going to that" and then remeber and come? Or would you run it on the Wed. ten days before, and hope people remember? If they don't see the ad in the paper the next week, is that bad? Like, it's not happening because it's not in the paper again?

Thanks for any help with this.

Then last month they throttled me to 100 addresses per hour. Then last week they throttled it again to 100 addresses per day.

So, fine. I tried to move my email list over to Google Groups. It said I could just paste in my addresses, which I did. Well, that got flagged for review and the site told me that if I attached an explanation as to why I'm inputting so many addresses they'd review it and get back to me in 24 to 48 hours.

Well, 48 hours has come and gone and no response from Google.

I'm up a creek. I don't know where to move my email list now. It seems that nobody wants to touch it unless I set it up as an opt-in list. But these people have have already personally signed my list or are otherwise interested. I have 6 days to go before my next show and I have no way of sending out a simple reminder of the show.

Ideas anyone?

How do you people handle email lists?

http://tribes.tribe.net/apocalypse_club

PS. Go to Spin This, HOV, Neo Genesis, DG, and MEAT!!
Oh yeah and APOCALYPSE when it happens again:P

I have heard a cry for more APOCALYPSE and/or more APOCALYPTIC events. I myself have asked why? Then again so many angry puppies seems like fun.

APOCALYPTIC TOP 10 THINGS I'VE LEARNED AS A PROMOTER

10. Always use color flyers (we live in the future)
9 . Never trust anyone who insists on not being paid
8 . A club is like a colon.......you got to keep it regular and keep the shit to a minimum.
7 . Never let trouble stand in the way of adventure (Baron Munchausen)
6 . DJs are like actors, there are good ones and there are bads but either way their shows are filled with drama. (dont let that ruin the show)
5 . Never take anything for free from a venue owner. It may come at higher price than expected
4 . If someone says they'll be there, they wont
3 . Never go up against a club that you want to go to!
2 . Never tell the truth, no matter what, because it creates drama. It doesnt matter if you are right, wrong, defending someone else's virtue, showing someone that someone else is a dirtbag, or even saying another DJ sucks (if you dont like 'em, tell 'em they're great and help them get gigs not in your club).
1 . DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA!!!!

Now I dont care about drama, and I am willing to shell out the bucks for a venue. I am willing to deal with all the petty problems the people have, because hey all these issues are part of the APOCALYPSE. We are here to dance our asses off to the best old and new music no matter what the genre, as long as it is danceable.

I myself have lost two djs, three or four friends ( maybe not done there yet. LOL!!), have aged like 5 years in 3 months, sleep about 4 hours a night while promoting, lost a venue, been insulted to my face by a peer that I thought was a friend (ask and I will tell you what was said, but I wont say who, it would have been funny if it came from a stranger, heck it was funny any way, just rude).

So as you can see and most promoters know, because a lot of this happens to them, or did in the past. My heart goes out to the valiant promoters who have stood the test of time and finances.

Now after all that.................yes there will be another APOCALYPSE.
I cant say exactly when, because, well.....because of some of the above and I suffer from depression, just like everyone there are good days and bad days but un-medicated, since I hate doctors, sometimes it is difficult when faced with so much stress, adversity, and drama.

I have DJs, I will find a venue, and I will be happy to do this all because I dont believe in failure, only defeat. But most of all because I love it when y'all dance. That makes me happy as I know I have done a good thing.

I had thought of Apocaxmas, but things bubbled and I popped, sorry. But a few people made me realize that we had started something here with APOCALYPSE. Not the end itself, but perhaps a beginning of AN end. A kind of Alpha Omega. We claimed to play primarily Goth/Industrial but we also showed that we are willing to play music from the 80s, 90s, and 00s. Not just within "our" genre but any genre that can sustain the brutal beats of the dance floor.

So forgive my rants and jabs, I am laughing while I type this in between the tears. LOL!! Have a good holiday with a special thanks to those who will and have supported our efforts and we will doing something in the New Year!!

Peace and calm,
V

There was a topic going on in another tribe…but I thought I’d bring over some of the thoughts from what they are experiencing. I will try not to rehash what’s going on, but I thought it interesting enough and very akin to what we talk about here.

Basically there was an Artist Tribute night at an 80’s club. They received some relatively disappointing feedback. See they took the time to get the right advertising out to the fans and flyering and posters all over the city. They even advertised in the Artist Tribe. They did what all good promoters do. Their club was nicely filled. What they got was a bunch of Fans that were disappointed with the music played. Let’s just say that people were expecting much more than what they got. Which was an 80’s evening with “heavy rotation” of the artist they are doing a tribute to. Though it was a fun night of good 80’s music, I think those going didn’t have time to analyze the flyer and question what would be played or not. They were expecting a CD release party and A LOT of the artist. They got 1 in 4 songs in the back and 1 in 6 in the front and those were repeats of what got played in the back.

They had done a Prince one a few months back and I know of several people who came from San Jose and wanted an evening with Prince and got Little red corvette and Kiss in the hour they were there. They left and went somewhere else…disappointed. I do Prince tribute nights and if I played either song, I’d be lynched because the man has over 25 years of his catalog to be played!

Personally, If I am going to a tribute night, it better be heavily handed with said artist and not just the hits either. If you are bringing in fans, they are going to want to hear something other that the top 3 songs that get played on the radio. Know your audience that may be hip to what you are doing (esp if you do a lot of advertising). This is SF and the particular artists album drops tomorrow…there is a little bit of buzz. Considering there is NOTHING going on to support the album and that other countries and cities are doing CD release parties for this, this was a ripe opportunity for this club. I heard 2 cuts of the album in the time I was there. (11 – 1:15). Judging by the responses some are going to think 2ce before going there again.

How do people revive a place with a really stink reputation? I was offered a chance to do some shows at a place in the Mission (not naming any names) that can't seem to draw more than 5 people, all friends of the bartender. What's more, there's no advance money available, so performers have to play solely for the door. This isn't such a bad thing, but any ideas people have on how to build an audience would be most welcome.

Well, I thought this could be a good topic for a thread. DJs of all types (brand new, recently started, experienced but not established, or super stars) should post below with their genre of music (maybe also name five bands or so that you favor), their affiliations (if any), and perhaps any specific promotors, events, or venues they are interested in working with

I'll start off. I go by .od. I am affiliated with Blackmail, which is the first Monday of every month at The Cellar on Sutter St. I spin primarily industrial but am slowly growing my ebm collection (which is slow going since I only like to spin vinyl, and ebm isn't exactly plentiful on vinyl).

Bands I spin: Front 242, Assembly 23, Chemlab, KMFDM, Controlled Bleeding, Mussolini Headkick, etc.

I (so is my cohort Verablue) am looking to venture out into some other events/venues to find people that are more akin to appreciating my preference for early industrial. The Monday nights at the Cellar are more appreciative to my selective gothish-borderline-New Wave.

Events/venues/promotors I'd be interested in collaborating with:
Spin This!/Leggy (duh), Die Machinen, MEAT, Pandora's Box (so what if its all women, I'll wear a dress), Death Guild, DNA Lounge, Rawhide.

so yea... jump in, the water's fine.

hi! so i am mostly interested in organizing outdoor events, but due to all the laws and rescrictions, good outdoor venues are hard to come by. Our last party was 6-7 hours away in the mojave desert (beautiful!! but hard to get peeps down there), the party before was 5-6 hours north at a mineral springs near shasta...
so basically i am wondering if anyone knows of potential outdoor places to throw parties. They must be isolated enough that the constant thud of really loud bass for sometimes up to 24 hours in a row won't piss anyone off and be large enough to accomodate anywhere from 150-500 people and their cars. Private land is preferred but renegade spots are considered as well. and hopefully the roads will be easy enough for any passenger vehicle to navigate.
just thought i'd put it out there, mostly for events next summer but also we are searching for a place for an event on Oct 8.
thanks in advance :)
