Sunday, April 6th, 2008
11 AM – 1 PM

Lines and Geometric Shapes: A Guide to Carving Your Place in Space

Dancers create lines and shapes with their bodies as they move through space. This class will teach you how to frame your movement to suit the aesthetic your dance aspires to. We will discuss how to—use lines to define and accentuate a movement, effectively use the space on a stage, create interesting shapes on stage with other dancers, create shapes to compliment a musical phrase, cater movements to a certain style or mood. Class is open to all levels, although at least 6 months of study is suggested.

$35 preregister/$40 at the door

The amazing duo from the north is gracing us with their presence here in DC, Sunday Dec 8th for a tribal fusion belly dance workshop! And following the workshop we'll be celebrating the holidays at our HOLIDAY HAFLA! open to people interested the tribal belly dance community in the DC area!

Melanie and Karin began their history together as a collaboration for a New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom performance. From there, the duo Kassar was born. They have been dancing together as Kassar for the past seven years, all the while studying with numerous instructors of the tribal persuasion. Between them, they also bring a background rich in formal ballet training, West African dance, tango fusion and Indian dance technique. This has culminated in the development of their own unique, highly-acclaimed style of tribal bellydance. Kassar has since grown to both teach workshops and perform nationwide. They are extremely pleased and excited to be teaching their first workshop in the DC area. www.kassar

Think you have mastered your isolations? Join Kassar for a workshop that will push your boundaries and train your mind and body to connect and move in unique ways. Fusion - Fuse-ion - what's it take?

Ok, so I'm posting this to see if anyone's interested in discussing the topic. What does fusion mean in the setting of tribal belly dance? I think I'm only listing questions we've all asked and discussed before, and with some I think the answers are pretty obvious, but I'm curious what other people have to say.

How does tribal fusion distinguish itself from ATS?
How does tribal fusion distinguish itself from traditional styles like Egyptian or Turkish oriental?
What elements are appropriate to fuse in to this dance?
When does fusion become cultural appropriation?
When does fusion become something other than belly dance?
What are some of the most creative tribal fusion dances you've seen to date, and why have they been inspiring to you?
What do you as an audience member look for in a performance? As a fellow dancer?

Oh, those seem like a good start. If anyone responds, feel free to add more, I might do the same...

Tempest and Sashi will be joining DC dancers for an evening of dark fusion and gothic belly dance on the night of October 1st. Performers include Asharah, Ariel (of Proserpina), Mavi (of Romka), Hilary (of Shakra), Wendy Youssef, Kaihea, and Caleena Janay.

Doors open at 6:30. Show starts at 7pm. Tickets are only $20 each.
