    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;First of all... I'm writing a story about psionicists and mages.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I'm primarily a fan of psionics, and yet I don't know what one would say of the various levels of psi mastery.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;What would a novice psychic be called, and what would an absolute master (psi-equivalent of an Arch-Mage) be called?

&lt;br/&gt;

&lt;br/&gt;Meditation? ~ 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Meditation is the most important foundational skill to learn, as it will help you be able to do many other things. I’m sure you have seen some kind of master in movies meditating, especially those involving martial arts. What you are trying to do in meditation is to completely “center” yourself into a still and focused place where you are perfectly balanced and in tune with your body and your surroundings. From this center point, you will then be able to move in any direction in mind and body. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The Two Levels ~ 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Our minds are layered like an onion (or a parfait). But unlike these metaphors, the deeper we go into the depths of our minds, the bigger the territory becomes. Think of this like waves in the sea: Each of our own individual conscious minds is like the tip of a wave. But the base widens out the deeper you go, until the bottom of the wave is the entire ocean. Or consider a house, with the rooms we live in, and the ones where we store stuff, but seldom enter. 
&lt;br/&gt;So the topmost layer of waking consciousness is the conscious mind. This is the part of your mind that is active, alert, concerned with your everyday life and your physical well-being. Your conscious mind is the rooms of your house that you actually live in – and whatever is up on your monitor! 
&lt;br/&gt;The next level down is your subconscious mind. This is like your basement or attic, where all sorts of stuff are stored that you’ve forgotten about – or would just as soon forget about! Your subconscious contains your memory banks and files – including thing you thought you had relegated to the trash. 
&lt;br/&gt;Perhaps there are more layers to this onion, but in meditation we are only interested in these two. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Brain Waves ~
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In meditational trance, your brain frequencies stay within Alpha, averaging about 8.5 cps. When you’re in this range it gives you a tremendous boost to your psychic energies, allowing you to transmit telepathy, or even heal over great distances, etc… 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Background ~
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;“Meditation is both an ancient spiritual practice and a contemporary mind-body technique for relaxing the body and calming the mind. Most meditative techniques have come to the West from Asian religious practices, particularly India, China, and Japan, but similar techniques can be found in many cultures around the world. Until recently, the primary purpose of meditation has been religious, although its health benefits have long been recognized in these cultures where these methods originated. 
&lt;br/&gt;In the West, however, the first view was that meditation induced a type of dissociate state or a type of catatonia. Thirty years ago, meditation was still considered a religious practice, not appropriate for healthcare settings. Meditation is the first mind-body intervention to be widely adopted in mainstream health care. Meditation is now widely taught at medical settings such as the VA clinics and Kaiser Permanente where it is prescribed as a technique for relaxing the body and calming the mind.” 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;First Exercise ~
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Sit or lie in a comfortable position and relax your body completely. Then observe your self carefully to note any muscles that start to become restless. Allow such muscles to consciously relax, and do the same for any other groups of muscles – but don’t fall asleep! Complete and total relaxation is your goal. Start off with five minutes the first day, than increase your meditation period another five minutes each day until you can completely relax for half an hour. When you are able to do this, continue on reading… 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Moving Along ~
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Various techniques for meditation are taught by a variety of people, and you may run into some of these later on or already have. None of these are wrong; anything is right that works for you. Here is a good technique that I have found to be very effective. Once you become comfortable with this one, you should experiment with others as you encounter them. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Second Exercise ~
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Find a quiet place where no one will disturb you for twenty minutes or so, and shut the door to keep out noise. Make sure there are no ticking clocks or dripping faucets, etc. Set the temperature at a comfortable level, and wear loose clothes (like sweats and a baggy shirt). Place a cushion on the floor against a wall. Place a small table or other stand about three feet in front of the cushion, and place a lighted candle (in a candleholder that will catch any melting wax) on the stand. Don’t use a candle in a jar for this, as you need to be able to see the naked flame. Then turn out all the other lights and sit down cross-legged on the cushion, with your back against the wall. Fold your hands together in your lap, and sit up straight. (Some people like to lie down flat on their backs to meditate, but I don’t recommend this, as it is too east to fall asleep!) 
&lt;br/&gt;Relax your body, stare into the candle flame, and just let your thoughts fade away until your mind becomes clear and void. One way to do this is to count slowly backwards in your head, starting with one hundred (and add “one-thousand” with each number for timing). Let your eyes become unfocused, but keep them open for as long as possible, blinking very rarely (you don’t want to go to sleep!). Breathe deeply, inhaling and exhaling as you slowly count each number: (inhale) “ninety-nine…” (Exhale) “…One thousand.” (Inhale) “Ninety-eight…” (Exhale) “…One thousand.” 
&lt;br/&gt;Allow your mind to become still. Eventually, all thoughts will disappear (including the counting) as will all objects in the room, until there are only the flame and your breath… you will be in a state of trance. But don’t worry if you don’t succeed right away; this can take awhile to learn, and no one gets it right at first. Just keep practicing – even a few minutes every day can make a difference – and it will come to you. After awhile, you won’t even need the candle, and it won’t matter if you close your eyes. Your awareness and perception will awaken to new degrees of clarity, and you will obtain better control of your psychic energies. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Other Approaches ~
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Once you have learned the technique I have given you, I would encourage you to experiment with different way. As time goes on, you of course will get really good at this. 
&lt;br/&gt;What I have described here is one method of meditation, given as an example. But please realize that this is not the only way to meditate – some meditations are done with eyes open, some with eyes shut; some with counting, some with chanting; and some in silence. Some accept whatever thoughts come to mind; others attempt to block them out. Some people advocate absolute stillness, and some encourage movement. 
&lt;br/&gt;Stillness does not suit everyone; some people meditate better in flowing movement. If you are a person who says, “I just can’t seem to get into meditation” or can’t stay focused on your meditation, a working meditation might be able to get you started. Find a task to do that is repetitive and does not involve active thinking. Raking leaves, kneading bread dough, washing a wall with repetitive strokes, and pulling weeds are all activities that can help move your mind into a meditative state. The act of keeping your body engaged while releasing your mind is often a good starting place. Soon, you will be more easily able to practice a seated meditation. 
&lt;br/&gt;
