Brand spankin new dj mix by me that includes some of my favorite tracks at the moment. The style ranges from totally nuts to groovy-drippy-trippy dancefloor smashers. It was recorded on Aug 02, 08 at PsyCircle Studios in San Diego, CA.

Equipment used:
M-Audio Torq DJ Software, 2 x Pioneer CDJ-800's for the track controls, Ecler Hak-320 DJ Mixer. Recorded on a PC using SoundForge 7.0 through M-Audio Project Mix I/O Preamps.

In an effort to make some room in my studio, I'm selling off part of my psy collection.

At least two crates of records... Yes, actual records... That range from the 90s into this century. (there are some other genres beside psy/goa mixed in there, too.)

Also, I'll be selling off a good portion of my psy CD collection, too, which ranges in the same time period.

So, if there's something special you're looking for, shoot me a message.
I may compile an actual list over the holiday weekend before I sell the collection off in bulk to a private buyer... but it just depends on how much time I have.

most meaningful psy albums of '07

Everyone's preferences differ, but here are my '07 'psy'lights -- albums that not only moved my molecules, but connected on a deeper level. Including compilations in this list would take forever, so I'll let someone else tackle that.

Cosmosis "Psychedelica Melodica" // This album could just as easily be called "The Second Coming of 'Synergy'" because that's the last time Cosmosis kicked this much ass! From the goa vibe of "Dance of the Cosmic Serpent" to the funky riffs of "Martian Blues", Bill Halsey reminds me of what got me into this music in the first place : energy, mysticism and a genuine sense of fun.

Logic Bomb "Sonic Algebra" // Gives me that feeling of something pulsating deeeeeeeeep out in the universe. Appreciated the variety of moods and atmospheres here. Otherworldly!

Tristan "Chemisphere" // Possibly Nano's strongest release this year (with the possible exception of AMD's "Big Fish.") Just great, driving, memorable trance.

Shadow FX "Direct Influence" // Zenon Records continues to compel with its unique brand of moody, minimal psytrance. This album had a particularly outstanding format/feel which shows a true maturation of the music.

Braincell "Transformation of Reality" // With other exciting albums like Trold's Time of Illusion", Glowing Flame Records really has their priorities straight. "Transformation of Reality" is a no-fluff exercise in awesome. Funny that '07's Rastaliens album "Back on Earth" wound up being a lesser triumph.

ITP "Lose Your Illusion" // I can't help but like the way these guys handle the butt-rock guitar tracks. Sorry, there it is. Full-on at its full-onniest (but perhaps a litte too sample happy with the George Carlin). The Flamenco vibe of "Guatemala" will always conjure memories of change and upheaval in this new Texan chapter of my life.

Solar Fields "Earth Shine" // Listening to this gives me momentary flashes of early Platipus releases, but much smoother and gentler -- more wise and grandiose. The tracks are longer, but never boring.

Decoy "Push Button Pony" // My favorite progressive album of the year! What sets Decoy apart, other than thoughtful songwriting, is their live instrumentation. A true soundtrack for the sunrise.

Kiwa "On The Frequency" // Fat and juicy party sounds abound on Kiwa's proggiest outing to date. Love the electro-breakbeat influsion. And "Way Back" ?? -- just twisted! Lump this in with Hypersonic Whomen's "Push The Limit" and you can see Exogenic Records has made their mark this year. New Haltya in 2008, please!!!

Etic "Zooming Out" // Nice 50/50 split between atmospheric progressive and ambient tunes on here. Solid concept and execution.

Sound Field "Audio Surfin'" // The sheer amount of sonic novelty on this album -- idm-ish intros, breaky interludes, fun sound effects and samples -- makes it something really quite special. Oxygen Records never disappoints.

Eat Static "De-Classified" // For a time it seemed like the aliens had left our music. Thanks Eat Static for continuing to watch the skies!

Xenomorph "Demagoguery of the Obscurants" // I'm a big fan of industrial, and this album delivered on the level I was hoping The Star Shrink Shooeters' "Tanz-Demokratur" was going to (but didn't quite -- despite having Tim Schuldt and Kris Kylven on board).

Scorb "Ipso Fvcto" // Holy shit, was this album ever worth the long wait! 2007's crown gem!!! Even the packaging was 100x classier than any psy release this year. Scorb's sound can be described as devious, mischievous and not the least bit timid -- flirting with breaks, d'n'b and smoother sounds to counteract the evil! I get the same goosebumps listening to this as I did when I first heard Infected Mushroom's "Classical Mushroom." Oh Infected Mushroom...

~~downtempo/midtempo~~

Flooting Grooves "Upside Downe" // Was going on about Flooting Grooves earlier this year, but I stand by my initial appraisal. At the very least, it should have helped the Shpongle fans get through the year with a heaping serving of flute-driven psychedelia. Light up some Nag Champa for this one.

The Peaking Goddesss Collective "Organika" // Another quality Peak Records downtempo release. Has a sort of jam-band quality...you can close your eyes at times and really envision you're out in a forest or field somewhere listening to a live pa. A real sense of the sacred on here.

Liquid Stranger "The Invisible Conquest" // Was there a better psy-dub album released in 2007? Because I don't think Ashtech or Pitch Black came close to this masterpiece. "Djarum Express" is sexy as hell.

Evan Marc "Emotional Ecology" // Minimal tech-house Bluetech! Need I say more?

Kuba "Through a Lense" // Making a switch from Liquid Sound Design to German label Chillcode, Kuba's Balearic-style lounge makes you want to forget your troubles and escape to somewhere warm and sunny.

Asura "Life Squared" // Breathtakingly epic and scorish at times, "Life Squared" prompted me to backpeddle through Asura's discography, but I'll be damned if anything there comes close to this. Certainly my #1 pick for psy-ambient/downtempo this year.

Younger Brother "The Last Days of Gravity" // I'm continuing to evaluate this one. It's got a bit of country twang to it that I'm not sure I'm totally on board with, but "I Am A Freak" is pretty fun. Makes me think of the nonconformists' strained effort to separate themselves from the pack. At the end of the day, "A Flock of Bleeps" is tough act to follow. Maybe this one will grow on me.

Shulman "Endless Rhythms of the Beatless Heart" // I guess I'd hoped Shulman would continue to gravitate more toward an idm-like sound (i.e. "Zero Degrees") so was somewhat disappointed when he pulled out this fairly standard, cannned-world-music-sample-soaked album. "Mia Nihta Mono Den Ftani" is possibly its most redeeming track, but even that outstays its welcome after the first 7 minutes.

~~~Let-down of the year~~~

Ananda Shake "Inside The Sound" // What happened, Ananda Shake? "We Speak Music" was great. This is the most disappointing full-on album since that turd of a Quadra album that came out last year. Both acts have just gotten too clubby and -- dare I say -- cheesy.

looking for gear solutions...

I am looking for advice regarding a specific situation - I spin using a laptop and midi-controllers (a 32 key keyboard and an 8 channel midi-mixer), and when it's time for my set I have to squeeze my gear in around the CDJs - which always sucks as my gear is in constant danger of falling off the table. Plus the other DJ's get annoyed because I have to shove around their gear.
I'm sure I'm not the only person who has this problem. How have you solved this problem? What racks are worth using? Have you discovered any ingenious ways to get your gear up and out of the way?

MixMeister... any thoughts?

I've played with Traktor and Ableton Live for DJing. Recently, I came across MixMeister. It looks like a pretty good cross between the DAW layout of Live with more DJ oriented features. Live seems just a little too disconnected from the DJing experience for me. And as far as I know, Traktor won't let me see a multitrack timeline where I can arrange the tracks.

I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with MixMeister and what are your thoughts?

Some people suggested that I give some information about what I do so here I go. I go to grad school for international development and my major is human security. I focus on human trafficking and plan to pursue a career in that field once I graduate. I am currently volunteering for this organization and will be interning with them over the summer. They have a very small staff but are trying to expand. I have planned this event with the help of my boyfriend and 100% of the ticket sales go directly to the organization. Myself and the DJs are doing this soley to raise money for this cause. Now some info on human trafficking:

The trafficking of human beings is the recruitment, transportation, harbouring, or receipt of people for the purpose of exploitation. It is estimated to be a $5 to $9 billion-a-year industry. Trafficking victims typically are recruited using coercion, deception, fraud, the abuse of power, or outright abduction. Threats, violence, and economic leverage can often make a victim consent to exploitation.

Exploitation includes forcing people into prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs. For children, exploitation may also include forced prostitution, illicit international adoption, trafficking for early marriage, or recruitment as child soldiers, beggars, or for religious cults.

I'd be more than happy to supply anyone with more information upon request. I don't want to write a book on here.

After all the great advice you guys gave us, my 15 yr old wanna be DJ and I checked out Ableton, which he really likes, but before we cough up the 400 $ we are wondering about another option which is Logic Express 8 combined with Garage Band adding to about 300 $.
What do you think about the LE8/GBand option. What would be the main differences?

Yo all, ...

I'm making plans to put together a modest sound system to DJ psy on the playa (especially for Dark Skies/Singuarity). I'm concerned about playa dust (gritty, corrosive) and speakers/drivers, mainly. Electronics, connectorin and cabling I'm pretty good with, but cones, cabinets, etc worry me.

How do you deal with this? Are there boxes that work OK in that environment? Or do they simply get ruined eventually?

Description:

My summer 2007 schedule was crazy hectic, filled with gigs and gatherings all over Western North America. The event which was the finale was the Symbiosis Gathering in California in September, and this mix reflects a portion of the Sons of Aurora set I played with my partner Norris. The gathering was one of the highlights of my summer and these particular tracks are for me a portal back to that amazing weekend up in the mountains East of San Francisco. The fact that they are all off of the same three labels goes to show that I am a big fan of what Flow, Blue Tunes and Iboga records are up to these days.

This mix is a short one due to the one hour time allowance as it will was featured on Wes Straub's new online radio show 709 Sessions which can be found at: http://www.tribalmixes.org .

Sorry about the multiple postings, for some reason my previous two attempts ended up with empty postings. Grrr..... so now I am doing them one by one. =)

Norris and I had a blast at Motion Notion (Alberta, Canada) this year, the promoter James really out did himself and the weather was INTENSE but made for big adventures for sure.

We are now excited for our dub/glitch set at Shambhala (British Columbia, Canada) on the Beach stage on Saturday, and of course taking part in the Green Moon (Green Sector & Moon Tribe, hello turbo sound rig!!) camp at Burning Man (Nevada, USA) this August... now that's going to be one hot (+50 Celsius, zero humidity is the forecast) and dusty week in the desert. We are VERY happy with how our set came together for this years Motion Notion festival, so we decided to record it afterwards here at home and post it up for others to enjoy. This year we were wedged between two full-on psy performers, with Wizzy Noise being the act to follow us, so our set was meant to be a roller coaster through driving minimal tech, progressive and full-on psy. Add to that the fact that our set started out with hot dry sky's filled with stars and ended during a MASSIVE rain/thunder storm with tornado warnings for the area in effect... talk about INTENSE!!!! In the end our laptop finally stopped working and our fear was that it had actually shorted out due to the rain but the next day it started up without a hitch which was a HUGE relief. Our goal was to keep everyone engaged, twist a few noodles and not burn people out on the full-on. From all the super-positive feedback I think we managed to kick some ass!! Many of the tracks are killer classics, with a few shinny new ones thrown in, and the overall flow is a bit of a journey so sit back and imagine the thunder clouds closing in from behind, and as the mix ends the rain is coming down with a vengeance and the clouds are swirling with the threat of tornadoes. They don't call us Sons of Aurora for nothing....
