An Interesting E-Mail, That I Recieved From "Yoga Journal"!

This is some reasonable advice from "Yoga Journal"!

I can relate to this, at the present time, as I am rekindling my interest and passions for Yoga, Bellydance, Ballet, Choreography, and music!

Original Web-Article, Authored by Andrea Kowalski, Yoga Journal
Copied From:http://p.p0.com/YesConnect/HtmlMessagePreview?a=LiI9q-sVFVHPK4GswAaNDa
School Yourself
Even if your academic days are long past, it's easy to recall the excitement of textbook shopping, making new friends, and meeting new teachers. A new school year means a fresh start, so why not tap into the excitement and apply it to your practice?
This week, expand your yogic paradigm: Try a style of yoga new to you, or take a workshop from someone other than your primary teacher. If you'd rather study at home, take a new 20-minute online course from vinyasa teacher Kathryn Budig. Finally, make sure you have all of the yoga school supplies you'll need.
Om Shanti,

Becoming a punk rock yoga certified teacher?

Is there a punk rock yoga teacher training retreat somewhere? I read the stuff on the web-site but I was unsure if I understood correctly that all one needs is to be enrolled in some kind of 200 hr ytt program. After or while I am finishing the training this year I would like to teach punk rock yoga because it's more palatable to me and I think it would go over great here in Halifax, N.S.

Thank you

Imposing your beliefs on your kids

A vegan couple just got life in prison because their 6-week old child starved to death after they fed it only soy milk and apple juice following a strict vegan lifestyle. The couple apparently never brought their child to a doctor either, so it's not just the vegan issue. Though soy milk as a replacement for formula is dangerous for kids as the phytoestrogren effects are enormous.

It makes me wonder how fair it is to impose our beliefs on our kids like this. I know people in all religions do it, such as refusing blood transfusions for their kids, but is adherence to our beliefs worth it? At what age do kids get their say in this? Parents slam their religion down their kids throats without ever allowing the kids free will.

Finding balance while staying engaged in the world

With politics heating up, it's hard to find the balance of staying informed, and weighing decisions, without getting so entangled that you lose sight of everything else.

How does everyone strike this balance?

On the one hand, ignoring politics and not voting to be is lacking compassion for the 50 million people in the US without healthcare or the 80,000 Iraqi citizens killed in the war.

But on the other hand, one can get so swept up and enraged about what is being said during the campaigns that you can lose your center really easily.

So, how does everyone find this balance between informed and engaged, yet still grounded and centered?

Come take yoga for free and be on Japanese TV! (New York)

(On behalf of Brian)

Just wanted to invite you to take part in a really cool tv show (in Japan, and what's cooler than being cool in Japan--). Japanese public television is doing a documentary about alternativeyoga in NYC. Punk Rock Yoga has been selected to be filmed for this special program, and I would very much like you to be a part of it.

We will be filming on
January 10, at 9pm at East/West Yoga, 78 5th Avenue, 2nd Floor. The shoot should take around an hour. There will be live music and free yoga. You will have my eternal gratitude. If you would like to be a part of this, please RSVP to nyc-at-punkrockyoga-dot-com, so I know who will be attending. Please forward this on to any yogi friends so we can pack the house for this event.

Music will be provide by Pico Fermi, and if you haven't heard Pico Fermi, you are in for a treat....really amazing, sometimes mellow, sometimes intense electronica.

Punk Rock Yoga new year updates

Hello

Kimberlee here, founder of Punk Rock Yoga. I have a few announcements about Punk Rock Yoga for the new year.

1. Our cities

2. Looking for a teacher

3. Graphic artist help needed

4. Retreat

5. Partner yoga book

1. It’s exciting. Punk Rock Yoga classes are now being actively held in Boston, New York, Seattle and Toronto and are being offered by some excellent teachers. Missoula classes will begin in March, and possibly sooner. Vancouver classes will also be starting up within the next couple of months. Fredericton, New Brunswick is also on the horizon. We have had interest from teachers in other cities as well, but no promises yet. It’s awesome to see more and more people taking up yoga and enjoying our unconventional approach.

2. Our Boston teacher Erin has an opportunity in New Brunswick too good to pass up. She will be leaving at the end of January and we are on a mad hunt to find a teacher to take over her classes in Boston. If you know of any yoga teachers in the Boston area who would make great Punk Rock Yoga teachers please contact either Erin at boston-at-punkrockyoga-dot-com or Kimberlee at yoga-at-punkrockyoga-dot-com. Thanks for your help.

3. We are hoping to come up with new t-shirts for this year and can really use some artistic help. Our teachers may be great at teaching yoga, but none of us are brilliant graphic artists. We could really use some help with this. We are happy to do some trade and give you some classes for your time. The designs do have to be electronic, as we will be sending them off to No Sweat Apparel (union-made sweatshop-free) to be printed. If you are a clever designer, and want to come up with a fun design for our shirts, please contact Kimberlee at yoga-at-punkrockyoga-dot-com.

4. I am kicking around the idea of a Punk Rock Yoga retreat either at the end of 2008 or beginning of 2009 and want to see if people are interested, along with where they would want to go, what they would want to learn, and what other side activities they would like to do while on a retreat. If you are interested, please help out by filling out this quick survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx\?sm=Q0RGNh_2fg6tRkVMtdloU0vw_3d_3d. Thanks so much for your help.

5. My second book I’ve co-written is finally done. The book is Yoga with a Friend: Develop trust, communication, strength, and compassion when you practice yoga with a partner. The book includes 30 partner poses illustrated with photographs, an introduction to yoga philosophy and how it applies to relationships, and guided partner visualizations. You can download excerpts from the book and see details about the special pre-sale offer here http://www.8thElementYoga.com/books/partner_yoga.php

Hope you all had some time for reflection on your growth over the past year. If you have any questions or feedback about Punk Rock Yoga, I’m happy to listen.
Happy New Year,
Kimberlee

Erin will be moving back to Canada soon, so we are looking for a great, radical free-thinking yoga teacher to take over Punk Rock Yoga in Boston. Please contact either Erin at boston@punkrockyoga.com or Kimberlee at yoga@punkrockyoga.com if you are interested or have a great candidate to nominate. Thanks!

Solstice reflection: What have you learned?

Every winter solstice I do a restorative and reflective class. It's also a chance for my own personal learning. This year I learned that sacrifices can be liberating.

What have you learned this year?

Some compassion is needed in India

Many in India believe that when a woman becomes a widow, she becomes cursed or is bad luck. She is then made to shave her head and live life as a beggar. Certainly the elderly in the US are not treated with great compassion either, but this practice could use some enlightenment and some compassion. One woman interviewed has spent 70 years living as an ostracized member of society, all because her husband died when she was 15!

This is essentially blaming the victim. I know that's part of their religion, but religion does evolve over time, and this could use some new thinking and compassion.

There is a great movie about this called "Water" that showed it as an issue in Ghandi's time. Sadly, it is still with us today.

We teachers have been brainstorming, but we'd like to hear from you. What would you put on a t-shirt? We'd love some artists to help with some cool designs as well.

Punk Rock Yoga and Belly Dance April 27

Punk Rock Yoga and Belly Dance - Special one-time class April 27, 6:30 pm

We are thrilled to present a fun experimental class for our students. Belly dance is a great way to gain flexibility in the hips, stretch and strengthen the lower back and develop greater body alignment awareness. It's also one the best ways to learn how to engage core muscles. This class is a great mix of core-focused yoga and a basic introduction to tribal style belly dance. We also have a special treat with some fun alternative music. All are welcome to come - especially beginners.

American Tribal Style Bellydance (ATS) is elegant and graceful, celebrating the strength and beauty of the body, regardless of age and size. Tribal Style is largely improvisational, using simple steps and gestures in a repetitive fashion, building on the music and the interaction between the dancers. Dancers working together in cooperation; a group focused on presenting a dance as one entity.

Zu Leika, Yoga Instructor: When Zu isn't traveling to Mexico or practicing with one of her three bands, she's teaching Viniyoga Yoga. Breath and movement are linked together as a way to move the body and quiet the mind. In Viniyoga, students are taught that the breath should actually lead the body into and out of each posture. Viniyoga is less concerned with arduous precise exercises than with developing a balanced and appropriate practice for each student.

Katrina, Belly Dance Instructor: Katrina has studied American Tribal Belly Dance since 1999. She started in Chicago with Taj, and Stephanie Barto of Read My Hips. After moving back to Seattle she danced with Christina Larson as the tribal duo, Diatribe (Seattle's 1st ATS Troupe). Diatribe introduced ATS to Seattle live at the Lava Lounge, various parties and the Pyramid Restaurant in Honolulu. Later she joined Troupe Hipnotica for regular performances at the Baltic Room and various other locations. One of her final performances with Troupe Hipnotica was at the Folk Life Festival. She is a Licensed Massage Practitioner, Ayurvedic Body Worker, and Postpartum Doula. In addition, she is certified in General Skills by Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance.
We need some musicians for Tuesdays - help dig them up with us!

I've harassed my friends enough over the years, now I need some help from you harassing yours. Punk Rock Yoga is looking for some live musicians for our Tuesday classes. We've got some great people lined up for our Wednesday classes, but Tuesdays have been harder to fill.

Tuesdays are 5:45 - 7:15 pm at Home Alive on Capitol Hill, between Pike & Union and, contrary to what I've heard you can find parking! In fact, often the musicians find a space right in front of the building. There's even a loading ramp to help roll up your gear.

So, what are we looking for: musicians of all styles (not just punk rock) who can totally do it themselves by schlepping and setting up their gear. They also need to play as part of a larger whole, not as a superstar - musicians follow the tempo of the class, and the cues from the instructor to play faster or slower, depending on the particular segment and theme of the class. It's challenging, but incredibly rewarding. To keep our class prices affordable, we offer musicians a voucher to take a free class in the future. Plus, we also invite musicians to bring a plus-one: they can bring a guest to take the class for free. It's a great deal.

So spread the word: we need some musicians to join us on Tuesdays. Since just about everyone knows at least one musician in this town surely you can tell 1 person, no?

Thanks for your help!

Auditions open for our resident musician progra

Throughout the months of March and April, we will be auditioning musicians for a three-month residency. The residency program is wonderful - musicians can really grow as musicians by playing regularly with the class and learning a great deal about playing for a group of people moving and meditating. As we practice our yoga, you get to practice your skills. We welcome musicians of all types, but a DIY spirit is a must: at our venues there is no equipment, just some power outlets and chairs to sit in. You do not need to play new age music!

Also, musicians should embrace community spirit in that they are helping to create an experience, not to be the center of attention, so it involves working with the instructor for cues about volume and paying attention to the pace of the class. At some points you can play fairly fast, but at others it requires a slower pace.

* What we ask is that musicians commit to play 3 weeks out of each month for 3 months straight (we like to leave one week open for guest musicians to come in). We are looking for residents for both our Tuesday and Wednesday night classes.
* What you get is a 10-class punch card so that you can take 10 classes for free once your residency is done . You also have the opportunity to bring a guest each session you play for free so you can share the benefits of yoga with a friend. You also get excellent resume experience plus the chance to play for a most grateful group of people.

Note, Punk Rock Yoga is not yoga to punk music, though we have played plenty of punk music and more. If you are curious, please read about the philosophy behind this class: http://www.punkrockyoga.com/mission.php

To audition, contact Kimberlee at info-at-punkrockyoga-dot-com to set up a session for you to come play at a class and take a trial run.

Get off your butt and get hard core about your yoga!

et off your butt and get hard core!

With the over-commercialized guilt associated with Valentine's Day finally over, it's time to reflect on some other over-commercialized guilt. Has your New Year's resolution to do more yoga and get into better shape already slipped away? It's only been six weeks! What happened?

Commitment–that's what happened. It's too easy to pass up a class when your class card is good for 6-9 months. Even without a class card you can just drop in whenever you feel like it. For some of us, that's not the kick in the butt we need to get us off the couch and into class.

So to get you committed to your yoga and fitness goals, Punk Rock Yoga is offering its students a Hard Core Yoga Pass: For just $150 you get a 6-month pass to take as many classes as we offer. That's less than $6 a week! It's our best deal ever, and since we offer two classes each week you could be taking yoga from professional instructors for less than $3 a class!

And don't forget about the benefits of yoga beyond better fitness, such as reduced stress, improved flexibility, and better mental clarity (which can help you not feel guilty about the choices you make in life).

This offer is available only for a limited time, though. Contact us at info-at-punkrockyoga-dot-com before February 28 indicating that you're interested and we'll send you more info.

I had a major health facility write to me looking for a teacher in Winnipeg to start a Punk Rock Yoga class at their facility. If anyone knows of any yoga teachers who are the free radical types looking to teach in a non-hierarchical, community-centric, experimental style, please send them my way.

The facility sounds like it's wonderful and supportive and would be a great place to bring PRY.

Musician needed for our special charitable donation class on December 7

Punk Rock Yoga is looking for a volunteer musician to play our special charitable donation class on December 7th. We will be giving 100% of the class entry fees to the Youth Street Clinic on 45th in Wallingford plus collecting donations of warm clothing. This is a great cause and a great way to give to those who need it most. The class meets at 5:30 pm on Thursday December 7 in Fremont.

You don't need to play punk rock, in fact, we welcome musicians of all sorts - punk, jazz, Middle Eastern, you name it. The Tuesday night is a flow class, so the music can be lively, just acoustic, or amps turned down so the instructor can be heard. Minimal or no lyrics is great as well. Music does not (and we would prefer not) to be new-agey. It's a chance to have fun and experiment.

Please note, this is a volunteer gig, so there's no cash, but there are great rewards. One, you will get a pass to take a yoga class for free at a later date. Two, you get the chance to stretch your skills by following along with a group of people moving and switching gears. It's a challenge in the class to keep the music interesting enough to keep the class engaged, but not be overly distracting. Three, it's a chance to check out what yoga is all about if you have not done so. Four, you get to play for a group of respectful, welcoming and appreciative people. For this special class, you get the wonderful reward of knowing you contributed your energies towards a fundraiser for homeless youth in Seattle.

If you're interested, please contact Kimberlee at yoga-at-punkrockyoga-dot-com or visit http://www.punkrockyoga.com to read more about the class and details. Thanks!

Punk Rock Yoga is featured on page 176 of the December 2006 Oprah magazine. It's a big deal since Oprah is one of the best-selling mags around. But, I was prouder to be featured in Bust, because Bust is so much more something I would read. I bought Oprah today at Madison Market, a mostly-organic food co-op of all places, and for the first 200 pages it was nothing but advertising. It was insane. But, nonetheless, Punk Rock Yoga was in Oprah, and the writer did a very accurate write up, so it' a good thing.

Updates on Seattle classes

Hello,

Sorry it's been a while since the last update. I got laid off from my job, had a computer meltdown and went to New Orleans all in the past couple of weeks. So there's lots to catch you up on.

1. Charitable donation class
2. New venues for winter?
3. Musicians

1. On Tuesday, November 28th, we will have a special class focusing on generosity. We will donate 100% of the class fees to Youth Care, which serves Seattle's homeless and at-risk youth. The class begins at 6:30 pm, at Home Alive, 1415 10th Ave between Pike and Union, on the second floor (look for the Red Sky Studios sign on the street). Additional donations will be accepted as well. I hope you can join us for this special class.

2. We are looking for some new venues for winter to expand our classes. I would love to find a spot on Wednesday nights to round out the schedule. We would need a spot where we could have the space consistently, for 2 hours per night. We are open to workplaces. Right now we have a great partnership with the Institute for Systems Biology that works really well. If you have a workplace with a carpeted conference room (or large open space) and your company would not mind having the general public come in under our supervision and some musicians play as well, let's talk. Please drop me a line at yoga-at-punkrockyoga.com.

3. We're on the hunt for some musicians to schedule out the next couple of months. Musicians who play get a voucher to take a free class, so if you've been trying to convince your musician friends they need to do yoga, this is a great opportunity for them.

That's all, thanks for your attention. Happy belated Halloween/Samhain

Namaste, Kimberlee

It would involve dropping off fliers at coffee shops, grocery stores, clothing stores, etc. Whoever can do this (it takes pretty much a weekend afternoon), will get a 5-class card in exchange for their hard work.

Punk Rock Yoga - Now in NYC Pass it On

Three years after its inception, Punk Rock Yoga® finally comes to New York. Punk Rock Yoga is Hatha yoga with a twist. We practice yoga in unconventional spaces such as nightclubs, self-defense training centers, biology research centers, and more. We feature live musicians and DJs playing everything from Japanese flute to didgeridoo to experimental guitar. Punk Rock Yoga teachers present a straightforward approach to yoga philosophy while emphasizing the ancient yoga tradition of Do-It-Yourself.

New York classes begin September 25. Classes will meet Mondays from 4:30 to 5:45 pm at The Red Room, located at 85 E. 4th Street, on the Third Floor. The Red Room is located in the Bowery between 2nd and 3rd Avenue. It's BYOM: bring your own mat or a towel for padding under the knees, although mats are not required. The drop-in rate is $10.

About the New York instructor

Brian Williams will be leading the New York classes. Brian has been practicing yoga for ten years. After being inspired by his favorite teacher, Sadie Nardini, he decided to teach. Since completing his studies with Ms. Nardini, he has been teaching at two of NYC's most beautiful yoga studios, Essential Therapy, and Iron Flower Fitness. He heard about Punk Rock Yoga from a friend, and was so excited by the idea he decided to bring it to New York so he could share this vibrant and rebellious yoga with his friends. Brian's classes are heavily influenced by his love of laughter, rock and roll, and fun. His flowing classes focus on strong core work, and moving through the poses to create a vibrant and often surprising dance.

Great Seattle classes

1. We're looking for someone to do some flyering in exchange for free classes. If you can flyer on Capitol Hill only, you get a 5-class card, Fremont only a 5-class card, Fremont plus Capitol Hill you get a 10-class card. Please contact Kimberlee for details on where to flyer and how to pick up flyers.
2. We have great classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Tuesdays meet at 6:30 pm at Home Alive, 1415 10th Ave between Pike and Union behind Neumos. Home Alive is on the 2nd floor - look for the Red Sky Studios sign, which is at the building entrance. Thursday nights meet at 5:30 pm at the Institute for Systems Biology 1441 N 34th Street in Fremont right near Gasworks. Try to get there before 5;30 and ask where the yoga classes meet. We also have great musicians this fall. Jorge Zorro begins his residency at our Thursday night classes in October. Jorge offers mix of tasty acoustic standards and spicy originals, worked with soul, presented with passion. And beans.
3. Shake Rattle & Pose, the crazy yoga dance fusion class, begins October 6th and will be the first Friday of every month. I still have a couple of guest passes so you can take it for free. Please send your mailing address to yoga@punkrockyoga.com and I will put one in the mail for you.
4. There's a special version of Punk Rock Yoga being offered through the Experimental College for 5 Wednesday night sessions in the U-District. You can register online at http://depts.washington.edu/asuwxpcl/catalog.php?sec=courses&category=YOGA%20and%20MEDITATION
5. Know any musicians? Our Tuesday nights have plenty of openings for guest spots. Spread the word.

Crazy question I know, but I'm trying to come up with ideas, since Tuesday is Fat Tuesday and I'm teaching. I'm still weighing the thoughts, but I think joie-de-vivre is a wise choice.

How will you celebrate?

Here's another crazy idea: yes, the tradition of Lent is a Christian one, but the idea of trying to give up something for 4 weeks is such a powerful tool (and the idea of restraint is very much a yoga concept). I'm considering giving up a physical vice for half the lent period and then spending the other half trying to give up a mental vice. Just a thought...

volunteer musicians needed for big yoga class jam on Feb 21

Punk Rock Yoga is doing our annual crazy chakra class on February 21 and are looking for musicians of all kinds to play a portion of the class (one chakra essentially) for about 10-15 minutes. Last year, the musicians had an amazing impromptu jam at the end, which was amazing.

I'm looking for musicians of all kinds, acoustic is preferred, but electric is okay too.

Here's a quick wish list of musician and their toys

Drummers: tabla, conga, taiko, or those big crazy bass drums

Wind: flute, saxophone

Strings: guitar (of course), harp, violin, cello

Keyboardists, tambourine, and of course digeridoo would be wonderful too!

Tell your friends.

Please E-mail info@punkrockyoga if you're interested in playing.

Thanks
