Believe it or not it is that time again, Time for a new session of Belly Dance classes!!

The summer/ fall session begins Tuesday August 14 & Wednesday Aug. 15th!

Tuesdays

6-7:15pm Tribal combos:
Class focused on learning short choreographed combinations of technical movements and saucy style for tribal improv dancing. This is a blend of traditional belly dance moves with a modern hip hop flavor.

7:30-8:30 pm Strength training and drills:
Having trouble with your isolations? Need to build quad strength for floor work? Then this is the class for you!
One hour of butt kicking, body movements and exercises to build strength and flexibility specifically for tribal fusion belly dance.

8:45- 10pm BellaTrix student troupe rehearsal

Wednesdays

6:00- 7:15pm Tribal & fusion belly dance:
This is an introduction to the vocabulary & technique of American Tribal Style, and tribal fusion choreography. This class's purpose is to give you a strong foundation of the movements & technique of Tribal and fusion styles of belly dance.

7:30-8:45 Isolate and flow:
Beyond the introduction to belly dance, this class will help you further your ability to isolate. As well as introduce layering and combining movements enabling you to better express the music through your dance.

9:00-10:00
private classes per request.

Help combat breast cancer

Dear Friends of PURE,

Did you know that every three minutes, another woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer? Every three minutes!Because I cannot ignore this shocking statistic, I've made a commitment to work toward changing it, and I need your help.

On May 19-20, 2007, I'll spend the weekend walking, along with thousands of other people, in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Boston. (Although I live in Washington, DC, I'll be walking with my good friend Jena, who lives in the Boston area.) I will walk at least the distance of a marathon (26.2 miles), and I may choose to walk as far as a marathon and a half. I will also raise at least $1,800 in donations to the cause. I'll have to spend the next few months training, fundraising, and preparing for the event.

Please help to support my efforts and this critically important cause by making a contribution. I would appreciate even the smallest donation you might be able to make. You can make a donation on-line, through my personal page:

I am going to keep the web page up on our site and we'll see what happens. I find that things move in waves, it is the natural ebb and flow of life, but until the next wave comes in we need to focus on other things here at the studio. I am suppose to walk this but since I can't I inquired about entertainment for those who cannot walk and offered them to look into P.U.R.E. to see if they would be interested.

DCTribal Cafe tonight is cancelled!

Hey everybody -- given the weather we're going to err on the side of safety and cancel tonight's DCTribal Cafe. If the National Weather Service is right – we’re looking at freezing rain at 6pm, we’re worried about our loyal tribal café attendees being on the roads!

But -- No Worries! We'll be back next month with an amazing line up -- Yameena and Belladonna will perform their sets in at March's cafe and Asharah will join us again in April.

PURE Thoughts

Hello everyone,

Do you realize that PURE DC Metro has been in existence for over a year now?! I can't believe how many wonderful people have come and gone in that time. We have built a great community and many of us can get through the entire choreography now. Did you have any doubts at the beginning? We have even expanded to Northern VA and encompassed an amazing group of dancers led by Wendy. Our friends from Richmond have also made several trips to share themselves. Melissa is also now a co-facilitator, finally recognized for all of the wonderful things she has been doing to build our chapter. Gary has built a website to be proud of at www.puredc.org. Looking over the newsletters, it's amazing how many things we have already done to spread peace and joy. 'Tis the season to spread even more.

There are many wonderful events coming in the new year:

1) We are going to perform at the DCTribal show on Sunday, January 16th in Northwest DC. We need to get a confirmed list of performers. So far we have: Melissa, Ellen, and Laura. Andy will be drumming, but I am not sure about Gary and Jon. I may be able to perform, but it would be nice to have such enthusiasm that I wouldn't need to. Plus I am already performing in another piece in that show. Please let me know either way if you can perform. I also need everyone performing to fill out an agreement as soon as possible.

2) The Health Expo. The same weekend as DCTribal, but we haven't heard anything. (Have you been able to get in contact with them Luz?) I am hoping we can do this and the DCTribal show, but we shall see what happens.

3) Kaeshi will be coming to the DC area to do a PURE workshop. She will be teaching us 2 to 3 new choreography sequences on February 17th and/or 18th. I am so excited. We are still in need of a venue so if you have any ideas please let me know. Please start spreading the word. I think this is going to help us build up membership in DC.

4) We continue to work on our veil choreography. We have come up with some great stuff (especially with the help of Ann Marie) starting off from what Erin showed us on her last visit to DC. Please come to rehearsals and put yourself into it. Just like our little debke (thank you Luz), we can put some of our own spice into this.

I hope that the new day and time are working well for everyone, Tuesday at 7:00 PM. You have asked for it and you have received. If this doesn't work for you, don't forget that you can still rehearse on Sundays with the lovely ladies in Sterling, VA. Welcome to Libby, our newest member and Stephanie who will be trying to come soon. Please send Nona some healing energy as she is still recovering from her surgery. If you are new to PURE or have missed some rehearsals, now is a great time to come back. We are getting people ready with the foundations choreography and working on new and exciting things. Halloween Night with P.U.R.E

We had a great time...processed around Dupont Circle...It is amazing dancing in public....out in the open air....Lifting spirits, celebrating life, and sharing joy.... just being there doing your thang! Applause from people at restaurants for just walking by...comments that would bring smiles to our faces...and even some really funny comments that made us laugh! Something as simple as an organized venture of art out onto the streets binds the community in peace. The drummers (Anday, Jon, and Mo) did a great job....The dancers were all so beautiful in their orange and black....and who can forget the FIRE.....check out some of the pictures.... Rehearsal

In an attempt to to accommodate more people, PUREDC Metro has changed the time of rehearsal. We will now be rehearsal at 7:00 PM on Sundays in Southwest DC starting next week. Dancers with at least one year of belly dance experience are welcome. We are also looking for a few good drummers.

PURE DC Procession This Saturday, September 30, at 3:00 pm

PURE DC will be holding a procession for peace this Saturday, September 30, staring at 3:00 pm at the Archives/Navy Memorial metro station (green/yellow line). From the metro station, we will proceed to the Navy Memorial, next to the FBI building, and in front of Archives. We will complete our procession through the sculpture garden, finishing by the fountain.

PURE WS/New Location

I am happy to announce that Wendy Yousef is now a co-facilitator of DC PURE Metro. The "Metro" is added because Wendy will be facilitating a second rehearsal at Transitions Yoga and Dance. Anyone who is considering (or is already) dancing or drumming with PURE in DC or VA is welcome to attend.

The following is a message from the wonderful Wendy:

Our very own Washington D.C. PURE facilitator, Elizabeth Ehrhardt, will introduce our VA PURE location to the basics of the PURE combo. This will also mark our first official PURE gathering at Transitions so we are very excited. I hope that everyone is able to participate and celebrate the beauty of PURE together.

When: Sunday, September 10th; 4:00-7:00pm (with a possible dinner out afterward)
Where: Transitions Studio in VA (unless we have too many registrations, then we will possibly workshop in DC)

Why: To raise energies, healing, and awareness through group dance experiences
How: $30 for the introductory workshop (includes handouts, a DVD, music CD, cards, and a pin for individuals who join PURE)

The New White

At rehearsal this week we talked about the possibility of doing a white costume--white top and skirt. This would be our summer costume to keep us cooler and make us look more, well summery. We think we could do it at a reasonable price. My original thought was a white flamenco skirt from Discount Dance for $31.55. They also have a white leotard that goes up to XL for $12.75, but it is long-sleeved.

This crop top might be an option, but I like the neck less and the XL isn't so large from what I hear. It's $24:

PURE at Take Back the Night!

Wow...that was great! I cant wait to see the video...minuse a few of my..well..uh...mess ups...it was a great performance. The drumming, the dancers, the fire, the energy, and the cause! It was a very warm (even though it was chilly outside) intimate gathering with a hudge vibe going on! The audience LOVED every part of the show....I wish we could have video taped their faces and expresions! I was proud to be a part of it and my family (and Deedee who is extended Family) loved the show! Thanks to Wendy D. from my studio for also showing up.....Transitions seems to really resonate with the idea of PURE and it looks like there might be an invasion! LOL

Inspiration

This past weekend PURE had our dress rehersal and we took it outside to a park area in DC. We ran through the PURE dance, the beautiful fire solos, and our drum jam.

The most beautiful thing began to happen. A group of children hung around us and started dancing along with the dancers and were REALLY DAMN GOOD! Then they wanted to play with the drums with us and we all jammed. It was such a beautiful experience and really reinforced in me why I am so in love with belly dance and all it encompases and what PURE represents to me, sharing, healing, love, light . . even during a dress rehersal.

Three of the little girls helped us carry our drums and bags back to the cars. Gary and I hung out at my car while and talked and joked around with the girls. . Gary did a few little magic tricks and I did my "I swallowed a baby" cry for them (maybe you'll hear it someday, its a cry that sounds like a baby and my mouth is closed and all .. its apparently quite creepy) which really tripped them out :) We all shared great belly laughs. I could have hung out for hours.

They asked us about drumming and dancing and where they could do it and if they could be part of PURE with us. They were real sad when they found out that they could not be part of PURE because they were under 18. They inquired about kids bellydance classes in the area and I had no idea what to tell them only that I promised I would look into it for them and hopefully be able to see them again at the next practice and give them some info.

Wouldn't it be FABULOUS if we had a kids tribal bellydance community in DC~Virginia~Maryland? How friggen adorable would that be and what a great way to start off a childs life experience than with positive role models, camraderie, rhythm, coordination, laughter and not to mention the physical benefits of movement.

I wish I had the time and knowledge/experience to do something like this and I hope that by posting this it might be able to start a spark of some sort, getting it out in the universe to manifest.

Does anyone know about anything like this in the DC Metro
area?

They asked for my phone number and email and I gave it to them. I hope that I hear from them again and that I have something to give back to them. :)

Tribe Vs. Yahoo Group

Today we talked about doing a Yahoo group to keep everyone in contact and to give updates.

We have this tribe too. I'm wondering if a group email from Yahoo would be easier for people who don’t check tribe regularly. Maybe we could use that for weekly updates from our secretary and special messages.

I guess my question is, do you want to keep this a "private" tribe or open it up, so that people can see what we are up to? If we open it up, we have to keep in mind that anyone can view it. However, we could also advertise it as a way to inspire and keep interest.

I wanted to thank Elizabeth and PURE for having me out today to speak about Non-Violent Communication as taught by Marshall B. Rosenberg. Thank you for being patient with me. As you could probably "evaluate" (ha ha) I am by far NOT a communication expert or have experience with NVC in a practical manner. My interest is that this model can assist myself and all of us (or like models) to take our passion for dancing for peace and non-duality to the next level of not only understanding it, but living it.

REHEARSAL INFORMATION & GUIDELINES

REHEARSAL INFORMATION

Who: Public Urban Ritual Experience (PURE) is an open community of intermediate to advanced dancers and musicians with no restrictions on age or size.

Where: Potomac Place Residence’s Fitness Room at 800 4th St. SW, WDC. Call the desk to be let in. The Fitness Room is down the hall to the left, on the left.

When: Rehearsals run every Sunday from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Members usually meet for food and conversation afterward. If more practice is necessary for an upcoming event, additional rehearsals will be scheduled, typically on Tuesday nights.

What (to wear): Bare feet or dance shoes only. The studio does not allow street shoes to be worn. Please keep in mind that when we perform we wear Chinese slippers or supportive boots.

Why: Members are brought together by a love of music and dance, and a desire to influence positive change. Community is the underlying goal of PURE.

Guest Facilitators: From time to time, we will have guest facilitators who come to work with us on various topics. Our first workshop will be on 3/5/06 with Wendy Youssef from Transitions Yoga and Dance. She will lead a workshop on Compassion and the Language of Life.

Cost: PURE is a volunteer project. Everyone contributes their time for free including the facilitator. All dancers pay $10.00 monthly in dues to help cover expenses. Everyone pays the same amount regardless of how many rehearsals they attended. Please pay dues the first Sunday of each month by cash (preferred) or check. Dancers new to PURE can come to their first rehearsal free of cost.

Costuming: Dancers and musicians are expected to buy or borrow their own costumes and jewelry. Additional information on costuming is available from the facilitator.

PLEASE RESPECT THESE GUIDELINES:

Be on time. In order to cover as much as possible and to avoid repeating information, it is important that everyone arrives on time. Please arrive early if you need to change clothes.
Be as consistent as possible with attendance. If you are not coming regularly to rehearsals, you may not be asked to participate in upcoming performances.

PURE rehearsals are not a substitute for classes. As members of PURE, dancers are constantly striving to improve their technique. Some technique will be covered during rehearsal, but it is not enough for a performing dancer. All members should be taking at least once belly dance class per week in addition to PURE rehearsals.

Process Driven: Although in PURE’s short life, it has been fortunate to be featured at highly attended concerts and participate in large marches, one should not join for prestige. PURE is about the journey, not just about the end result.

Cell phones off during rehearsal time. To ensure maximal use of rehearsal time, turn off all cell phones at the beginning of rehearsal.

Be patient with each other’s levels. Musicians and dancers in PURE are of differing levels, ability and styles. Dancers will master some moves faster than others. In general, most of the movements are fairly simple, but the challenge is to do them as a group. It is more beautiful to watch a large group execute simple movements in unison, than many execute many complicated moves in a chaotically.

The group comes first. PURE is a community project. It is PURE’s belief that there is more strength in working together than working apart. PURE is not for people who want to be the center of attention.

Don’t take corrections personally. In order for the group to be synchronized with one another, specific corrections are given to individuals in front of the rest of the group. It may be hard on one’s ego, but it is more efficient that general corrections. However, please listen to all corrections as they may help more than just the person for whom they were intended.

Be open-minded. Remember that PURE is an Experiment and each rehearsal can vary greatly. PURE is a young group and is learning every step of the way. Keep the lines of communication open. If you have an issue, please communicate with the facilitator so that a solution can be worked out.

It is up to everyone to make PURE a fun, fulfilling and meaningful experience. We want to create community for each other as a group and for the public with whom we share our message. Thank you for all that you contribute to PURE: your time, energy and creativity.

Rehearsal Day & Time

Several people have asked me about changing the rehearsal day and time, which is difficult. I really want to accommodate everyone so that they can participate. I know that it might not be ideal for some people, but at least through the end of the year, it will continue to be on Sundays at 1:00 PM. I hope that you can make it. If not, I hope that you can adjust your schedules so that you can attend in January.

One of the main reasons for this day is studio availability. The studio that we are using now is booked Monday through Thursday in the evenings. This is a common theme among studios. If we do move rehearsals to another location, the day and time could change, but we will probably still run into the same issues.

Rehearsal space has been very difficult to find, and I have been lucky enough to have the help of Erin. It can also cost upwards of $100.00 per hour. The space we have now is being donated, but we are continuing to look into other spaces.

It may be possible to move the rehearsal earlier (say 11:00 AM) or later (5:00 PM or so), and keep it on Sunday. Please let me know here if that would help. Thank you!

PURE Weekend highlights include the following:

• September 24th: 10 - 3pm. PURE workshop.

• September 24th: 4 - 5 pm. PURE participates in a panel on arts and activism at the national Green Festival.

• September 24th: TBD: Hafla!!!

• September 25th: 10 am. PURE Procession on the Mall, along national monuments and historic sites.

•What is PURE?

Public Urban Ritual Experiment (PURE) is a collective of dancers and musicians who have come together to share their love of dance and music with the public for the purpose of healing and peace. With branches around the country, PURE is meant to inspire individuals to reflect on what they can do in the spirit of peace. Each gesture, small or large, contributes to the strength and solidarity we can build in our local and global communities. Go to www.puredance.org for more information.

•Can I participate if I have never taken a PURE workshop before?

Sure! That is why PURE will be having a workshop on Saturday, the 24th, from 10 am- 3pm. At this workshop you will learn what you need to know in order to participate in the procession on Sunday, the 25th! Click here for more information, and to register.

•Can I take the workshop and not join the procession?

Sure! The PURE workshop will be a wonderful opportunity to learn a unique movement vocabulary, as well as an opportunity to dance for a purpose! Whether or not you can make the procession, you are welcome to learn the PURE format, which will unite you with other dancers across the country.

•What if I'm already a PURE member?

If you are already a PURE member, you do not need to take the workshop again. Just come and participate in the procession, the green festival, the UFPJ rally and all of the other events in Washington DC that weekend.

•Where should I stay if I'm coming in from out of town?

We will do our best to find free accommodations for everyone coming in from out of town. Make sure you fill out the information form so that we are aware of your housing needs. Thank you!
