"Straps"(?) to hold the drums in place while Processing???

Hello to all!

This is Amira (Merrie) of the Traverse City branch and I have a question about the drums. I am the Facilitator for PURE TC, I have been learning the Riq along with a couple of other people who are learning (another learning the Riq, one learning the Tabla/Doumbek) from our ME Drum Instructor. So, if all goes well, we will actually have drums this year for the July Procession instaed of using the CD.

As far as playing the Riq, I hold it regardless of being seated, standing or moving. But, I was trying to figure out what the drummers would do. I dug out the video, watched the beginning and noticed that the drummers are wearing some sort of over-the-shoulder-strap that holds the Drum. I showed the clip to my instructor, and she was not familiar with the "strap", so I told her that I would ask about it here.

If anyone could help me out with what the "strap" is called and how to find them, that would be GREAT!!!

Thnaks,

  • I think the best person to answer that question would be Karim Nagi. From my observation, my buddy Brad (Kaeshi Chai's hubby) along with Pete List and some of the other drummers have improvised and created little holsters by using 2-3 inch wide nylon strap (or some other soft material) by making what first looks like a belt then looping one side through the other around the stems of their drums and then wearing it like a sling crossing from the right shoulder down to the left hip. You might have to safety pin the knot in place so the it doesn't slip while you're walking. It's a simple and effective approach, but it works well and can be easily removed afterwards..
  • A friend in Tampa, Lee, makes dumbek corsets that include a strap that goes over the shoulder and is adjustable. I'll see if I can find a picture from a recent drum class. She vends through baladi boutique here in Florida. She might be able to make them in the same PURE color blue as suggested if asked.
  • Hey!
I did this yesterday worked fine!

Got a guitar strap. (you can get these for $3 to $15. I used a $5 strap i already had.

1 Piece of strong string (but real thin) acoustic guitar straps come with this.

    1. Take off one Peg of the doumbek
    2. Make a loop with the string and push it in the space between the head and the body.
    3. put the peg back in (the string should end up behind the peg.
    4. you can take the opening part of the string and just open it up and put the back of the doumbek through it.

  • Maybe this link will work better:

    • Thank you all for responding and giving me (and my instructor...I passed the info along to her) all these ideas! Special thanks to Carmine for making a video...thanks for going to all the trouble!

This will be my first Procession not dancing as I will be playing the Riq. I have realized that I used to think that learning to play the Zills was hard, drumming is much harder, but lots of fun (having learned the Zills made learning the ME rhythms easier) ! You drummers make it look so easy, I have even MORE respect for what you do! Now when my students "whine" about about learning to play the Zills, I can set them straight! :-)

      Again, I thank you all.
