issues facing the fire community, and we need to get the word out quick, and
there is an important Town Hall meeting wednesday.

*Who*: All members of the Los Angeles Based Fire Arts Community

*Why*: During recent interactions with Los Angeles County and State _Fire
Marshalls <http://www.film.ca.gov/LocationResources/FilmSafety.html>_we have
learned that they are in the process of designing a set of safety standards
and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our
industry. These safety guidelines are to be implemented in the first
quarter of 2008.

We have the great fortune that our local county Fire Marshalls have
offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards.
Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FX in Entertainment
(SAFFE)and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide
guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing ourselves and
interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the Fire
Department.

This *_Wednesday, December 12, 2007_* a Town Hall Meeting has been called to
inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of
members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community.

******It is time for us all to come together, as a community - to openly
create our own guidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance
standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide
this before it is decided for us*****

In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for
fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los
Angeles area. This list can be joined by following this link:

This list is an opportunity for us to stay in touch as a community, and
discuss a number of pressing issues that are affecting the Los Angeles fire
community such as the upcoming implementation of safety regulations,
standards, and restrictions governing our industry.

The LA Fire mailing list will be a great place to:
discuss issues affecting the fire community
share fire related tips and techniques
communicate about fire events in the LA area
and more

Please spread the word by continuing to forward this to fire performers who
are in Los Angeles, or who visit Los Angeles and perform with fire. If we
fail in this initiative then viewpoints such as "Poi is the most dangerous
tool in your arsenal" or the potential banning of poi spinning in the
direction of the audience may become a reality.

bring your own towels, as like last year we did not supply towels for personal use.

Please note, when using the fresh water from the bucket please do not use the bucket to clean oneself, this will contaminate the shower head mechanism.

I am a maker of dancing costume wings, feathery headresses and ceremonial wind wands (for smudging/ clearing). some of you have seen me as a massive white winged bird creature at multiple getherings and festivals. Favorite Vatra Moment

A few nights ago, on the march of lights parade thru the mission w/ a sound system, some pyronaughty freaks, we were about to turn up Market street.

Vatra walks up, big smiles on his face, and laughs to announce he just that he just told the 1/2 dozen motorcycle cops that we have to pull onto market to spin fire.

20 minutes later, after a few burns for us all, we allowed traffic to recommence on a saturday night.

Gang I am writing to you all from a Diary Queen in Shelby Iowa, free wifi next door, just wanta to say Josh, of the Muytators suppose to be uploading the 90 GB materials which is on external hard drive I loaned to Vatra. It is expected that he will be resizing the images and posting this to his server, once I find out more details I will let you know about getting higher resolution copies. But I need frame numbers which hopefully will be posted to the website.

Flaming Kiss / Human lamp

Hi everyone!

So, got any advice on getting this fire eating trick to work? For the life of me, I can't get the trick where you deposit some fuel in your mouth, then sustain a flame above your lips. Do you use an unlit torch to put some fuel in your mouth first, or do you just use a lit one to get some vapors goin?

I must be doin somethin wrong, cause I've practiced for hours, and all I ended up with is a scorched tongue.

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nevada—“Welcome home!” He shouts. We hug and I look at Burning Man, a city rising in the vast Nevada desert. I came here to pour out the last water from New Orleans. A year of rage and sadness sloshed inside me and I hoped the desert would soak the last of it away. But was it possible to “come home?” I had seen a city be flooded and a people made homeless. How could I let go of pain where no one wanted to be reminded of it? I went to Center Camp, a gigantic tent where the sun beamed on New Agers entwining limbs in slow dance. A woman leaned to me. “Why can’t this be the real world,” she paused. “Is the real world even real?”

Attendees often describe the event as truth and the outside as illusion. It is easy to feel this in an empty desert used as a stage to act out fantasy. Of course, fantasy is the refusal of separation. Hidden desires are acted out in hopes of revealing the true self. It is allowed even demanded. “Don’t be a spectator” is shouted by anyone who sees you watching rather than doing.

Burners speak of the event with religious intensity. The feeling of truth comes from this rare unity but it is a unity created by escaping differences not overcoming them. The real world separation from ethnic poor is finalized in the isolation of the desert. It is relevant because Burning Man borrows from cultures of color, to the point of being a form of minstrelsy.

Near my camp was a Hare Krishna site where whites with Hindu face-paint swayed and chanted. “We’re all one cosmic consciousness,” I was told. They smiled sweetly and fed me. Their sincere kindness eroded my guard.

I felt a genuine openness. Our conversation turned to New Orleans. I tried to say how it divided our nation but heard “we’re all the same cosmic consciousness.”

It sounded less a profound truth than an escape from pain through denial. Like the many attendees with dread-locks and saris, they wore a mask of color. They enjoyed the freedom of otherness without the burden of history and the exposure to power that real people of color endure.

The next day a friend gave me two pills of ecstasy. “If you don’t find what you’re looking for,” he said, “these will help you forget you tried.” I pocketed them, walked around and found an art installation with rows of crosses for soldiers killed in Iraq. A veteran kneeled and wept.

Once, the Christian cross was a symbol of sacrifice to me. Now it seemed an empty icon. I needed communion and found a Common Ground activist. We had met in New Orleans. “I was here when we heard about Katrina,” she said.

“People said in that hippie way, it was meant to be.” Her eyes flashed, “I was like what the fuck is wrong with you.” We shook our heads. I gave her a pill, if we could not believe in joy we could induce it. On the climactic sixth night of the festival, when burners set fire to a giant wooden effigy, I took half a pill. After the Man blazed and crashed I circled the inferno. My friend from New Orleans sat and stared into the fire. I hoped it burned away her memory of the flood.

I walked to Nexus, one of the large clubs. The mild glow of ecstasy forced me to feel my body. It left me knowing I have this small gasp of time on earth and the only meaning it can have comes from how I share it with others.

Nearby a young woman stood stiffly. I remembered the crosses and said, “Here,” and put the last pill in her palm. She smiled, “You totally read me.”
BurningManI leaned in, “Remember the story of Jesus feeding the masses.” She nodded. “Maybe it wasn’t a physical miracle. Maybe he had them split bread until each had a useless bit and realized they sacrificed hunger for togetherness. No one was left out.

Maybe that was the real miracle.” She hugged her thanks. The ecstasy had worn off but a stronger joy reached through me. I gave away the pills that could numb my exile. It left in my mind a selfimage I could believe in and while dancing, I held myself like home.

I was completley amazed at how bad ass everyone in the Pyronauts was and felt completly humbled and privileged to be a part of this amazing group....Last year I was in the pyronauts as well but as it was my first year I was a little bit disoriented and didn't have a chance to fully comprehend the bad-ass-ness that is the Pyronauts.....I have so many new tricks to work on now!!! DAMN! Words just can't even discribe the feeling that I felt in the conclave being a part of.....you guys......thank you so much for this feeling that is still with me and for all of the inspiration and for develping your arts so much and wow just thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!! I love you all!!!

I'm curious as to the things that have brought you to the next stage of your performance.This feels strange to me, since for my career my shadow has always been my teacher, and the occasional firespinner that I would come across...but I'm curious as to whats out there. There were lots of conversations of all our virtual teachers/inspirations.SO... What performance videos do you pay homage to, what websites inspire you, Who are those people (like Meg) that you could say brought you to the level where you are at...Give props to your teachers, and may we continue to learn from eachother.

Pyronauts Camp: recap & the future

Whoa. What a crazy and inspiring burn.
When I get the inevitable "what were the highlights?" question, I invariably reference our camp.
One of the best parts of the burn for me was getting to know the people behind the talent. I've seen pyronauts around the festival circuit and at last years burn, but always shrouded in a compelling mystery. This year, through the pyronauts camp, I got to know more than their incredible manipulation and performance style. For those of you who missed out on the camp experience, I'll give a one line synopsis: The jedis are solid all the way through, shining examples of humanity.
The jams in camp and the group fire performances were some of the best I've ever been a part of. Especially the jam saturday night after conclave.

I found that the camp allowed us to gel as a group. It showed when we performed together: more fluid, more interactive, more representative of a single vibration. Last year seemed like we came together only occasionally; we were a collection of seperate groups. This year pyronauts became a performance group in its own right, an end to work towards.

So what? I suggest we learn from this year, and start to dream about next year. Our performances are the art we share with the people of BRC. Next year, with ample time to plan, we should further the camp vision. I now feel there's a group to work for, rather than the collection of individuals. We should organize to have a really sweet camp and space:
A large, high ceiling shade structure for daytime playing and teaching.
A performance area front on a street to give shows at night. (with speakers and music)
A chill out space to bring us together.
Some organized workshops and trainings (published in "what when where") to teach each other and outsiders.

If we all do a little work, this is all very possible. We can follow the examples of some generous souls this year who organized and constructed almost everything for us. If everyone chips in, our space will be twice as nice, and we'll be drawn together through the process. Use this thread to dream and brainstorm.

It was really an honor and a pleasure to share space, time, and stages with you. Thanks to everyone who made it possible.

Pyronauts camp---whatchou got?

I feel lots of us are waiting on Vatra to do more than this brother already is... But aren't we the one's we're waiting for?

So all of us are making up a camp, right? What can we throw down?

I will quote Q in the next post--thanks for the initiative on this sis.

So I'm heading to Gerlach the 1st to bust some w/ the DPW, and we are moving onto the playa on the 14th. I'm carrying a 20' diameter dome (12' interior height) and would love to erect this wherever the pyronauts will be placed. I have a cover for it, and ground cover (tarp, not carpet). My vision for this is open... chill space, kitchen, evacuation shelter... whatever.

What could make this space much more enjoyable/usable/comfortable is.... whatever you got---carpet, chairs/couches, lights... etc... etc...

I will try to make a burn barrel while on the ranch... something pyronautic. We shall see what the desert (and workdays) will provide.

Replacement ballchain on the playa?

I just got back from vacation and realized the only ballchain I have for my poi is relatively old, and really needs replacing, and it is a bit too late to order now. Is anyone planning on having extra on the playa, and if so, can I buy a bit off you? I only need about 3 feet of it, preferably 13 gauge, but if someone has 14 or 15 gauge and couplings for it, that'd totally work.

Any help? I'm praying I won't have to bum poi off of other people the whole week

Packing for the Burn

In making a list of what to bring, I realized I don't remember the provided amenities.
Shower, and electricity, check. I know that much.
What about a kitchen? Will there be something to cook on, or will we be a sea of coleman propane single-burners?
If Vatra, or anyone else knows what is and is not provided, please list it here. I guess my main questions are about food, water, and cooking.

well i had plans all set up, i had plenty of time to get ready for BM

but it appears i may be extending my summer tour in europe until right before BM~ i'm filming/codirecting a fire dancing blurb for the BBC (poor me huh)

long story short, i may have to fly directly to burning man from europe, with nothing but my backpack, poi, and a few costumes. if i do have to do this, i'm just wanting to do some prearrangement... if anyone has some extra housing supplies, or most especially room in an rv or somesuch air conditioned atmosphere, please write me so we can arrange funds agreements, etc! i'm planning on sleeping at the pyronauts area and i may even be able to arrange to get my air conditioner there from texas... but a space in an rv with some fellow freaqs would be divine.

just testing the waters, any ideas?

THIS SUNDAY! Burning Man Fire Conclave Open Spin Jam

Starting in January of each year, the SF Fire Conclave starts their monthly gatherings on the last Sunday of each month before Burning Man. This is a Fire Spin Jam open to ALL taking place in the parking lot of Burning Man LLC's headquarters on 3rd St. @ 16th St. in SF adjacent to Snow Drift from 7-10pm.

Some of the people who show up are members of the SF Fire Conclave, the majority belong to other troupes that also perform in Conclave and there are others who have not joined any troupe either because they have not committed to who they will spin with at Burning Man or they just don't care to. The relevance to my tangent is EVERYONE IS WELCOME SO GET YO' BIG PHAT ASS DOWN THERE!!! ;^)

Pyronauts Represent!

During a short overlay in SanFrancisco, I was blessed by the amazin abundance of this family. Vatra, Thank you for opening your home and the doors of this city to Aurora and I.

In just a few days, we connected with a handful of pyronauts based in SF, and encountered others of this tribe... Matt of Chi-town, Sean-n-Prisna, Shredder Hoops... Ya'll were some amazin reflections.

Fomquar... wow. thanks for sharin the road with us. See you in the dreamworld.

Keep inspiring ya'll! If you make it to Central America this winter drop me a line. I'm in Costa Rica now... will be in Guatemala by march.

Crimson's email to the Fire Conclave list (10/05)

The Fire Conclave is a large collection of Fire performance troupes that perform around the Man just prior to ignition on Burn night each year. The Fire Conclave is comprised of many troupes from all over the US and Canada.

This is a copy of Burning Man's Fire Conclave announcement email from Crimson Rose. Crimson is one of the partners in the Burning Man LLC, Shin (head) of the SF Fire Conclave and in charge of all of the Shins from all of the other troupes involved in the entire Fire Conclave.

To the Membership of the Fire Conclave that danced within the Great
Circle Thank You for responding to the challenge of this years burn.
Every group outdid themselves even if their time of dancing was
short. Every year the fire dancing becomes more amazing, performers
perfect their skills and I see the level of excellence with fire
dance rise higher and higher. So also should the standards for
membership within the Fire Conclave rise higher and higher.

I pushed the numbers of people inside the Great Circle. Between
performers, fire watch, helmsmen, drummers we totaled 870 plus within
32 different groups. That is a lot of energy not even counting the
other people that occupy the space (fire men, rangers, pyro team,
neon team, Man builders, platform builders and press). I knew that we
would be pushing the limits with so many people, but I took a leap of
faith that it would work. For the most part it was amazing. I have
heard from many people inside the circle and outside that it was the
best burn ever. And I believe that the process that was created by
Tabasco for the ambient drummers that are not connected to any group
worked out really well. That will continue for next year as well.

Certainly there was not enough room, possible cues were not heard and
did not get passed on and time will always be an issue. Each group
does their best they can with the gift that is given to them, Dancing
at the foot of the Man.

I say a gift because this opportunity, invitation, is open to a small
number of groups that understand the limitation of this gift.
Space, Time, Flexibility.

• SPACE - Will always be at a premium because there is only so much
room within the Great Circle, and the space is not going to enlarge.
It means that only so many groups will be allowed to dance. In 2005
there were 32 group. Just too many, the number will be brought back
down to a manageable number.

• TIME - The whole of the Fire Conclave is given 30 minutes, because
basically that is about the limit of the patience of the participants
watching. And when I start hearing the crowd shout "Burn the fucker"
I know that the time is short and I will move things along.

• FLEXIBILITY - Anything and everything has a habit of happening
within the Great Circle. Things may not go as planned - time is cut
short, things run over. And because there is so much going on every
one MUST be flexible.

For any group to do a full show with unlimited time, unlimited
restrains and a more intimate audience then I suggest take advantage
of other areas through out the week to dance, any where besides the
Great Circle on Saturday night.

2006 FIRE CONCLAVE MEMBERSHIP - INVITATION

Headed in the direction of more choreographed dances, I found that
everyone met the challenge. And this year marked a change in how
things will work in the future. The standards for membership within
Fire Conclave will continue to be high. That does not necessary mean
more complex dances from those that are chosen. But more than just
jamming. Each group is invited to create their own dance.

STRUCTURE - The process for selection for membership and dancing
within the Great Circle will be similar to last year.
2006 DEADLINES are as followings. PLEASE RESPECT THE DATES
PHASE ONE - TELL ME FEBRUARY 1
PHASE TWO - SHOW ME JULY 1

PHASE ONE - TELL ME FEBRUARY 1 DEADLINE
Groups will need to communicate to me that they are interested AND
what they have planned. Tell me what your group is capable of
creating. This may be very hard for people at this point, you may not
know until deep into the Summer who will be in your group. But I need
to know way before that time. What you present to me will give me the
ideas of how your energy will be placed around the Great Circle.
Because I have heard from many new groups I am willing to
entertainment membership in the Fire Conclave to new groups. But
every group that wants a position inside the Great Circle Old or New
will have to Show Me.

PHASE TWO - SHOW ME JULY 1ST DEADLINE
I need to view preliminary plans of what each group is creating well
before we arrive on the playa. Once the videos are in, I will make my
decision of which groups will be dancing within the Great Circle and
communicate directly with them.

MEDIA FORMAT
• WEB SITE - send an address where your dance is located
• CD OR DVD - I can read the following programs:
• Real One player
• Windows media player
• Quick Time movie
• Video tape

FINAL DANCE will be 15 minutes. More information will come.

Certainly every group is encouraged to work with their own drummers/
musicians. Those drummers that are not connected to a group will be

BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION
The Black Rock Arts Foundation was established in May of 2001 in
response to the need to promote community-based exhibitions of
interactive art and support the artists and organizations that create
it; the impetus was spawned by the lack of accessible, free art to
the public that invites direct action with the piece and inspires
community.

Several members who direct Burning Man (including myself) formed a
new non-profit corporation and filed for tax-exempt status with the
IRS in July 2001. The Black Rock Arts Foundation received its 501(c)3
status in November 2001.

As some of you may or may not be aware of, the Black Rock Arts
Foundation is embarking on a new initiative to install works of
Burning Man art in the city of San Francisco for temporary
exhibition. Our first endeavor was working with the San Francisco
Arts Commission who asked the Foundation for its support in helping
David Best and his crew build a temporary installation, in the spirit
of the Temples they have constructed for several years at the Burning
Man event, at the center of the new Hayes Green.

The 2nd endeavor will be Michael Christian's Flock (Burning Man 2001
--http://www.michaelchristian.com/sculpt/flock.html) is slotted for
installation in the Civic Center Plaza in front of San Francisco City
Hall in mid- November. A wonderful article can be read at this

We are looking for a few volunteers who are interested in: helping to
get Flock ready for the install, helping with the loading and
unloading involved in the transportation of Flock from the East Bay
to the City, and potentially a few folks available to help on site
during installation. Most of the work involved is not "skilled"
rather we need folks who are willing to be the hands that help
execute logistics. Much of the work will involve heavy lifting. The
following is a list of the needs we currently have. Please respond to
hale@blackrockarts.org if you are interested in being a part of this
incredible opportunity!

Michael can use some help on the weekends from this point forward
doing some fine tuning and staging to ensure Flock is ready for
installation. The sculpture is currently in Berkeley in his studio
warehouse and so this is where the bulk of the work would be done.
The work sessions are as follows:

1) Oct 29 & 30 from 12 noon - 5pm
2) Nov 5 & 6 12 noon - 5pm
3) Nov 12: 12 noon - 5 pm

Sunday Nov 13th - Loading in the East Bay
The initial loading of the sculpture, which is in 40 odd pieces, will
begin on Sunday Nov 13th
If you would like to help load (most of which will be done by hand
and sheer brute force) please respond with your availability.
Time TBD

Monday Nov 14th - On and Off Loading East Bay & SF
Sunday's load will be off loaded in Civic Center Plaza and very
possibly a second load will need to come over from the East Bay.

Fire Arts Competition???

With us helping, the reach could be HUGE!

Lots of people means a lot of money available for payouts. A lot of us
could walk away with a month's rent or more on this deal.

fire dancing+motivational speaking

Of all tribes that I thought could appreciate this...
Today Niko is meeting with some schools in Minnesota to bridge the world between fire dancing and motivational speaking. I believe he has always known the wisdom beneath the fire and is now stepping forward to share that message and translate that to those who don't (YET) speak the language of performance/self-expressive arts. I suppose for me its not always about what you can do with the fire...but what the fire can do to you...

Performance Opportunity @ SF Decom

San Francisco's Burning Man Decompression is Sunday, October 9th. I've arranged a performance slot for Pyronauts even though I'll be out of town. I'm performing in New York and then at Playa Del Fuego (the East Coast Regional Burn). I won't be at SF Decom, but that doesn't mean the Pyronauts won't be!

I was just notified that there is a meeting with the Fire Marshal TODAY... Tuesday, September 27th, so they need our information ASAP! I know it's crazy short notice, but this is what I was told on Monday, only one day before their deadline.

Below is my modified version of the performer form from Burning Man. Please fill in the form if you're interested in performing at SF Decom on Sunday, October 9th. Add your answers below the questions. I will compile everyone's info into one big Pyronauts submission. There is no guarantee that they will give us enough time for everyone so keep your performance duration short, especially if you're a solo act. If you're a Pyronaut drummer from One People Voice Marching Gamelan and would like to provide beats, then please answer the relevant questions. Thanx :^)

Thanks to all of you for contributing your interstellar energy to our magical, mystical fire troupe at Burning Man this year! Every veteran Pyronaut I've heard from has said it was their best year in the Fire Conclave by far, and I couldn't agree more!

Crimson on the topic of Pyronauts.

I must say that it was a blessing to burn with such beautiful creatures such as yourself, my jaw dropped, my head spun, my psyche has been twisted and I will never be the same. To see you all take it to every limit possible and then break through the burning roof of what defines a fire performer. Lots of soul spoke through those spirals and flames and I give you all credit for what we collectively created.
I talked with Crimson after the burn on Sat. night where she confided that there were many times that she had questioned both her own and Vatra/Scotts sanity reguarding this group. for the most part we were a big risk and an unknown to a very planned organize and elitely chosen auditioned conclave whole. And her response in the end was that Pyronauts rocked! She definitely was expecting a lot...and was still impressed. that says a lot...and besides sanity is over rated anyways.

Discovery Channel show host

I got a question for ya... I'm sure you're aware of the Discovery Channel guy who'll be embedded in a Conclave this year, spinning fire under the Man. I believe that this guy will be spinning with the LAFC, this is what I've come to understand.

I heard a rumor the other day that he was actually spinning with PYRONAUTS and this was why we will be placed at 6:00 for the Burn Night Spin...

Is this true? Or not?

Is this happening again? Will there be a central beat or music? If so, do you know how it will be spread around the circle (a bunch of drummers, or music played over speakers?) and how we get our dirty little paws on it?

Thursday Night Playa Performance

This is not mandatory, but GREATLY encouraged. Pyronauts will conduct an additional performance Thursday night. This would provide us with a more relaxed and less time sensitive opportunity to run through the sequence for our Fire Conclave Performance. It would also give us a chance to get acquainted with each other and our Musicians in a performance environment... while giving Black Rock citizens an amazing spectacle to observe.

If there's not a suitable stage on the Playa to host us, we'll do it at Pepe Ozan's Dreamer, a huge partially submerged head containing an interactive interior brain space and a Playa mud chimney. Verified Location and Time for the Thursday night performance will be announced at our Wednesday Troupe Meeting. I will then register the performance at the ARTery so people can find out about it.

As most of you know, we were exempt from the requirements imposed on EVERY other Troupe in this year's Fire Conclave. We were not required to all rehearse a choreographed routine together and submit a video to Crimson for approval. This is because our Troupe is spread out all over the Globe, so it is impossible to all rehearse together. It is also because Crimson trusted me when I vouched for the experience and skill level of the members of our Troupe.

Many of the Pyronauts are in their own Troupes in their own cities, such as the 6 members of APSARA from SF, the 5 Mutaytor's from LA, the 5 from SPUNN in Chicago, and the 4 from Liquid Fire Mantra in Ashland, OR. Most others are either couples, or have already performed together. So the overwhelming majority of our Troupe already has mini-choreographed acts such as Duets, Trio's, Fire Combat, etc.

Because there is no choreography, some have asked "What are we doing?"

I'm still open to everyone's creative input.
This is what I've come up with thus far:

We have approximately 60 fire performers total. The Troupe will be split into 2 groups. APSARA and Liquid Fire Mantra are in Group A. Mutaytor and SPUNN are in Group B. The remaining Duets and Soloists will be evenly distributed into Groups A & B. So that's roughly 30 performers per group.

Both Groups perform 2 staggered 4 minute burns each. If you are skilled in multiple art forms, use a different tool for each set. This sequenced portion will run for approximately 16 minutes plus however long Chaos lasts (probably about 8 minutes). This sequence will ensure that we have at least 30 fire performers and 30 musicians performing at any given moment during the Fire Conclave's performance! This format will also provide every individual Pyronaut with a *minimum* of 3 Burns each (2 Burns with your Group and AT LEAST 1 during Chaos).

Within each Group, the position of the performers will be symmetrically arranged. The position of the performers for each Group's second burn will be a mirror image of the position of their first burn. In other words, if you were on the left side for your Group's first burn, you'll be on the right side for the second burn. This will put each performer in front of a different section of audience for each burn. Therefore, this will give each audience member a direct view of 4 different Groups of performers, instead of the same 2 Groups repeated.

We need to meet on the Playa to go over the sequence and positioning. That's why we have the Wednesday Troupe Meeting. This may or may not seem complicated to you, it's really just a matter of perspective. If you're feeling that this is complicated, remember to take into consideration that there is no choreography! This is only a rotating sequence of already established, symmetrically positioned acts.

Where to camp?????

Hello, so burningman decisions can be sooooooo stressfull! LoL Right now I am discussing with Vatra and we have not made up our minds yet between Woomb or Brain... very Yin - Yang in a funny sort of way. Woomb is what used to be Woonami Village where many Pyronauts camped last year. It is very basic, was near center camp, allowed freedome and a place for us and our friends to do our thing in peace and relative tranquility so that we could be well rested to go rage it out and about.
Brain has a community kitchen which sounds pretty appealing for some, myself am nutral for I enjoy cooking with smaller groups of friends, though the potluck party vibe of a large community meal sounds fun too. I struggle with the idea of trying to schedule around meals, or anything else for that matter in Burningman.
It would good to get an exact location of Brain and Woomb.
The concensis I have gotten from those I have spoken to is that we want to be near center camp and away from the big sound systems. Please share any thoughts, declared needs and idea's. Anyone have domes or other larger buildings they intend to bring out? I have a sound system I can bring, but only if it is needed and has a good home like a dome. It is bulky and cumbersome and I only want to bring it if it truly would be uselfull.

How's this all going to work, who is in charge of choreography/act order (if we have any), are we doing group work, do we practice at BM, what's the deal? So far we have a list of people, we have a tribe, but we have no idea how we should be preparing, if at all. I'd love to know what I should be practicing/learning in the next month and a half, that is a long, long time to improve.

Performer Fire Safety Guidelines, Tips and Tricks. Every Fire Watch and Fire Performer should know and utilize.

Type of Tools:

• Dynamic: Tools that may fly from performers grip and travel into a crowd. (Examples: Poi, Staff, hula hoop, meteor, fire breathing)

• Static: Usually smaller tools that are used in a slower dance or performance & if dropped will not go more than 4 feet from the performer. (Examples: Fingers, eating torches, palm torches, fans)

Fuels and Different responses:

• White Gas: Low flash point (probably the most used fuel)
o Used for Fire eating, most large tools, bodywork, Fire breathing.
o Dangerous if it spills, can light up quick and easy. It evaporates quickly, and has very little or no smoke.

• Lamp oil: High Flash Point (second most common fuel)
o Used for Fire Breathing, and most large tools.
o Leaves an oily residue on ground that can be slippery, however it is not likely to light., Smokey (usually after it has been smothered).

• Lighter Fluid: Low flash point
o Used for fire eating, and to help performers using lamp oil or kerosene light their tools faster. (Not a common fuel)

• Alcohol: Low flash point
o Used for fire eating, body work, breathing and colored flames.

• Kerosene: High flash point
o Smokey, smells bad, not for indoor use,
o Used with larger and smaller performance tools.

• Klean Heat: A kerosene supplement
o It acts like a blend of lamp oil and white gas, no smoke or residue, and harder to light. Have heard mixed response and have not played with it personally.

Fire Safeties tools of the trade:

• Wet towel (cotton or wool) or Duvetyn (unwashed, dry)
o These are your best friends
o The towel does not need to be dripping wet. It needs to be solidly damp.
o If fuel gets spilled on the duvetyn, through it away, and do not use again.
o Washing or wetting duvetyn rinses out the flame retardant chemical in it.

• Flash light
o It’s important to be able to see, when fire is not possible (ie Next to the fuel dump)

• Gloves (these are a bonus item, BBQ or welding gloves work great).
o Great for untangling chains wrapped around someone’s hands.

• Fire Extinguishers
o This should primarily be used for objects, not performer (ie stage is on fire). It is a last resort for performers. If possible use a CO2 (B) or water extinguisher (A) on a human before using a dry chem. (ABC).

• Voice
o Yell, announce yourself, and that there is a fire.

How to put tools out:

• Basic tools (ie poi, clubs)
o The preferred method is placing the towel on the ground, and having the performer place their torches on top. (Let the poi come to you)
o Sometimes performers will expect you to catch the fire and put it out, catch with the towel and smother. If you need to, take the tool to the ground to smother..
o Fully smother, if you stop too soon, the fire may flare back up.

• Tools attached to the body (ie fingers)
o Make sure you don’t push the fire toward the performer, sweep the fire away from their finger not towards.

• Multiple fire devices (ie staff or hoops)
o One flame at a time, preferably with a partner safety (then you can do multiple).
o Watch out for the end that is still on fire, have to be extra aware not to set other people or items on fire.

• Large fire items (ie Jump Ropes)
o Needs extra people, try and smother the whole thing at once, otherwise walk the towel smothering from one end to the other.
o You can also try gathering the whole thing into a bundle if the piece is not too big. A wet towel is better for this.

Fuel dump

• There is only one safe way to put out a fuel dump – extinguisher.
• Do NOT allow performers to place flaming tools near or in fuel dump.

Putting Performers out:

• Announce the fire
o Tell the performer where they are on fire
o Often a performer will brush a leg or arm and a small fire will be left, announce these and in most cases performers will put them out themselves.

• Announce yourself as you approach
o Beware, running up and putting a performer out while they are spinning big heavy balls of fire may not be in your best interest. Let them know you are there.

• Try and make eye Contact
o If they are panicking, rush. If they are not and should be, rush.
o If they seems to have it under control react but let them respond with you.

• Take care of yourself
o Having two people on fire is bad; if you are lit in the process of putting out a fire, put yourself out first.

• Tell the performer what to do/what you are doing
o Don’t let them hold a torch above your head while they are looking the other way.

• Keep your eyes open
o Watch
o If you are doing safety, and see safety putting some one out, if they don’t need help watch the rest of the performers. Do not stare at the accident.

• Use an extinguisher on a performer only if
o The fire is beyond the performer (ie stage is on fire)
o The fire is bigger than your towel can handle.
o You only have an extinguisher.

Things to Note and pay attention too:

• Clothing – In a perfect world everyone will wear natural fibers, however this is not a perfect world, and natural fibers are not as sexy as synthetics. Many performers will wear what they want, not what’s safe.
o Watch for frilly stuff, and fringe. This will catch on fire and stay on fire
o If it is synthetic protect yourself as well. It’s like hot sticky marshmallows when putting it out and will burn you very easily

• When watching several performers try and keep your eyes scanning the various performers. Watch the veterans do the cool and dangerous and the beginners who are backing them up.
• Braids are less likely to catch on fire than an Afro.

If the worst happens:

• Stay calm and do not cause panic, if you find your losing control, notify other safety and remove your self from the situation and allow others to deal with it.

• Injury:
o Make sure all fire is out
o Contact a Ranger who will contact emergency medical services.
o Try and keep the injured party comfortable.
o If a lot of water is available, (and if possible) place the wound in a bucket of water and keep the water moving over the burn. This will help stop the burn under the skin.
o DO Not use ice on a burn. This will actually cause more damage.

• Out of control fire
o On the playa try to put out with a fire extinguisher (preferably CO2)
o Try to keep it contained, keep performers and audience away
o If it is threatening to move into the audience or towards the man sacrifice your self to stop it or clear the area calmly, try to stay cool and collected.

I must drop out from the Pyronauts.

Recently Denise invited me into her group and apparently both groups will be on at the same time. Denise being my partner, I cant turn her down. I tried, actually but she got really upset and I felt like I was being selfish considering all she has done for me.

Denise said shell be trying to get us as close to you guys as possible so we can still hang out a bunch which is what really counts. Im honored to have been invited to join you and cant wait to see you all out there.

Hi-Dee-Ho Crimson,

It's Vatra. I am SOOOOOOO excited! I have assembled the most ultra-talented, all-star, super-hero troupe for the Fire Conclave this year!!! We're called "Pyronauts".

I'm fully aware that one of your primary objectives for this year's Fire Conclave is to raise the caliber of performance. That is exactly what this troupe was designed to help achieve. EVERYONE in this list is at the Top of their Art Form. Combined with the choreographed routine of Amber Reddin's L.A. troupe "Pois in tha Hood", we plan to give a dynamic "3 ring circus" feel... with their troupe being a cohesive choreographed center act, while our troupe orbits with mini-choreographed acts to the left and right such as duets, trio's, fire combat, etc... all integrated and entangling with one another. The two troupes will compliment each other as the energy builds. When you call Chaos, we will then all branch off into freestyle performances.

The Pyronauts include specialists in Poi, Staff, Double Staff, Chain-Whip, Rope-Dart, Meteor, Hula-Hoop, Fire Bull-Whip, and Belly Dancers with Fire Fingers and Fans. We even have one of the world's top Sword Swallower's who holds 2 Guinness World Records!

This is not a complete list of performers. Andy from Germany (winner of last years HomeOfPoi.com "Circles of Light" international video competition) is currently in Scotland at the UberPoi convention. While there, he will be recruiting some of the elite of the European fire community who are there in attendance.
