Are you pythagorean with noting to do? Are you also bored of not knowing any active veggies? Well so are we, so let’s get together and talk, drink, go to interesting places in the LA area or just chat online.

What are Pythagoreans?

The word 'vegetarian' was coined in 1847 when the British Vegetarian Society was formed. Before this, vegetarians were known as 'Pythagoreans' after the philosopher Pythagoras, who founded a scholarly community in Southern Italy in 539 BC. The Pythagoreans abstained from meat and founded their philosophy on mathematics. But their mathematics embraced musical structure and other arts as well. Pythagoras won an important battle at his school's outset. He forged an agreement that women would be recognized as coequal to men in the order. According to the Roman poet Ovid, Pythagoras said: "As long as Man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love."

These vegetarians were the mathematicians, engineers, and scholars of there day. Pythagoras himself wrote only a small part of the mathematics that we call Pythagorean. Theano, who was just one of many Pythagorean women who helped give us that large body of mathematics. She gave us the concept of the "golden section," which you might remember from your geometry class. Even the widely regarded Leonardo da Vinci read much of Pythagorean theory and was described as living entirely on vegetables by Giuliano de Medici, a patron of Leonardo and the brother of Pope Leo X.
