What does this sensation mean?

I recently became interested in practicing Qigong. I checked out a video from the library and did the practice as instructed. Toward the end of the video, I unexpectedly noticed a distinct vibrating/tingling sensation in my lower abdomen - it really felt to be in the area where my reproductive organs are located. What does this mean? The sensation wasn't unpleasant or painful, just surprising, especially since at that time, I had no idea you could actually feel Qi.

Also, I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but I am a female who has been trying to get pregnant for some time. Could it be related?

These sort of sensations are common in qigong practice. Too bad you don't have an experienced teacher to explain things to you. If you succeed in amplifying the level of qi in your body from your practice then that extra qi will go to the part in the body needing repair. You may not even know consciously that you have a problem in the area that the qi begins to be active. Besides that, if you are consciously or subconsciously concerned that you have a physical problem preventing pregnancy then your yi (mental intention) will direct the qi to that area.

    Good Luck!

Yep, its a common thing to have these sensations. usually it means that you have opened up more circulation of qi. This area of the body is called the "lower dan tien" and often when strong sensations are felt there consistently during, or as a result of practice, it means that this area is opening up and beginning to overflow - at which point energy can be led to open the acupuncture channels in teh body and promote greater health.

If you are in Las Vegas like you icon says, you can check out the Lohan School of Shaolin - where i trained. Sifu Steve is very knowledgable and could help answer some questions.

    good luck!

Angela, If you are learning from a DVD or tape, chances of injury is there. I suggest you seek a qualified qigong practitioner and learn first before proceeding to tapes or DVD. This is to ensure you have good grounding before starting out on your own. Where I come from, qigong is a traditional health art that has to be passed down from master to disciple. Why an instructor is valuable is because he needs to point out your mistakes early in your practice so that you can gain from your exercise. Usually, learning from instructional media (which is very popular in the West) is more convenient for the lack of teachers. But the set back is that all the learner could have learnt is probably exercise in slow motion, and not qigong in its true essence.
The sensation you felt could be just the muscles activated by that form of practice. Qi has a more pervasive feel if it comes from the dantien. You have described the sensation near your reproductive organ - it can mean everything or it can mean nothing - just like the Tao.
If you have been trying to get pregnant, qigong can help. But please get a good instructor for qigong is not just a body art but one that encompasses the mind and body. Try to see if there is a Zhineng Qigong class near you. I have seen this qigong and it is perfectly suitable for beginners who have little idea about the deeper concepts of qigong. Good luck
