Taichi question- tingling sensation

topic posted Sun, March 23, 2008 - 11:06 AM by  Apadana
I just started a beginners class in Taichi yesterday. While I was doing one of the movements I felt tingling in my left palm. This is the same sensation that occurs when I do Qigong but also warmth out of my right palm. I have been told that is energy coming out of my palms but why tingling on one side and warmth from the other?

Also my instructor said that most of the movements are in a circular manner. Is that because energy flows in a circular pattern?

Thank you,

There is a point at the center of the palm cal Lao gong or Palace of Toil. In acupuncture it is said:

Clears heat from the Pericardium and revives consciousness
Clears heat from the Heart and calms the spirit
Harmonizes the Stomach and clears heat from the middle jiao
Clears the nutritive level and cools blood

As you practice sensations will come and go, it is no big deal. The why is not so important. In general heat is healing and tingling blockages opening.

I do not know if energy inherently flows in circles but I seems to behave a lot like water. The human body is most efficient when it moves in circles and not in abrupt angles.

      Hi Ken,

Thank you for your explanation- very clear. I only had one Taichi lesson on Friday and the movements were so smooth and natural.

This is the answer I got from Spring Forest Qigong:

What you are feeling is energy. We all feel energy differently. Your right hand is yang and left is yin. It is wonderful that you have found how the energy feels to you. Master Lin is always telling us to "feel the sensations in our bodies" when we do the active exercises and meditations. You are doing a great job! You have discovered what your body does when the energy is flowing. Many Blessings,Spring Forest Qigong Support Staff

    Greetings -

You may be interested to know that there is a scientifically measurable effect to the chi emission in your palms, in terms of infrasonic waves. I discuss this in one of the lessons of my online Tai Chi mini-course. Here's a direct link to that lesson:
    www.cloudwater.com/intro/mi...Power.php

When we talk about circular motions in Tai Chi, it really has nothing to do with how energy flows. Energy can flow in any pattern. If you look at the four main Tai Chi energy elements (peng, lu, ji, an), only one of them has a distinct circular pattern.

It's interesting that many Tai Chi limb movements "appear" more circular than they actually are. I attribute this to combining limb movement with torso, hip, and/or waist turns. In other words, while the performer may be performing and essentially linear arm movement (for example, those that express ji energy), the turning in the torso may make the arm movement appear more circular to an outside observer.

    Best wishes,
    Al

      Hi Al,

Thank you for your response to my question. I think there is a scientific reason for this chi emission

      Much appreciated information

        You are welcome, Apadana.

In some of my courses and reports, we discuss how to use the chi emissions from the palm during Tai Chi to encourage exchanges between the Wei Chi (guardian energy) field and the dantien.

Also, if you check my blog for this month, I mention three Qigong "chi flow" techniques. Two of three (channel tracing and point pulling) use the emitted and surrounding chi from the hands to encourage chi movement in certain meridians and vessels.

You can get to my blog at www.cloudwater.com/tai-chi-blog. Look for the posting from Sunday July 13, 2008 entitled "Tracing, Pulling, and Locking - Three Precision Techniques to Develop More Chi"
