States of mind are how we frame and interpret the world to our inner model of it. Some of us have a positive outlook/picture and some have a negative. Some have just a even-keel view of the world. As long as things stay balanced and routine, then everything is Ok.
With all the recent economic news there's a tendency to slip into a Problem Outcome Pattern. Where we start looking for the next problem. What else is going to fall on us? What is is going to go wrong? This can lead to a downward spiral and cause all forms of anxiety and stress.
How do we get into what is known in NLP as: "State?" It's as easy as sitting in a particular position, breathing a certain way and tensing or relaxing the body to take on the character of that state much like a good actor does. Take for example, how do you sit when you're depressed? How do you breathe? Is your body tense or limp? Conversely, how do you sit when you've just been told you've gotten a huge raise and promotion way beyond your expectations? How do you breathe? Are you tense or limp?
So, we have control over our state when we become conscious of that state. We don't have to slide into a Problem Outlook State. We can use what NLP calls: an "As If" State. It takes the same amount of energy. It's just another choice in a long line of choices in our life. You employ the As If State by asking yourself in any given situation, "What would it be like if X turned out for the better?" X can be a situation or event. You move into a positive outcome by asking the question. The mind being the willing servant, immediately starts into trying to answer that question! What would it be like if what you're afraid of work tomorrow, turned out better than you could have imagined? What if that person you've been dreading to speak with, came up and was very friendly and didn't even bring up whatever you were worried about? See how this works? Or... you could spend all night losing sleep and worrying about the negative Problem Outlook/Outcome. It's up to you!
What would your life be like if ___________ positive happened? What would you be doing right now? How would you be feeling? Move into the positive change you'd like to become. Put on the clothes, the walk, the mannerism and the mind set of that change you'd like to become. You've always had the power of positive change! Use the force Luke! Ask the question! Change your stars!
:D

Re: As if...
Tue, October 28, 2008 - 8:03 PMi love the 'as if ' games... :o)
i prefer the 'as if' walk - i walk and move for a period of time (or cracks in time when for example taking a walk with my little son) thinking i, let's say, got a new wonderfull job...
(btw. i did!!! hehehehe)
besides preparing me to recognise and take the opportunity with openess and gratitude when it manifested ( and not doubt and/or overlook it) - it also helped my mind gain some clarity as to the particulars of what i want...
