I am running away from the big city next weekend and heading up north - a trip to fern canyon always reinvigorates me. If anyone has any other suggestions for up that way I'd love to hear them - Thanks.

Sun, August 14, 2005 - 11:41 AMThanks, it's on my list too. Every time I have been there I kind of feel like I have wandered into a Japanese woodcut.

Fri, August 19, 2005 - 1:02 PMhi. if we have a nice sunny day while your visiting, i'd recommend baker beach in the afternoon. its a beautiful, mellow, nude beach. its never terribly crowded and is cove. you can finding off of scenic drive, about 2 miles south of trinidad. its not a state or federal beach either, which means if free from cops and rangers. -

Fri, August 19, 2005 - 1:20 PMOssagon rocks trail. Its off Newton B Dreary (the road that Prairie Creek SP in on) follow up towards the end and on the right side is a trail that is about 1.5 miles off moderate terrain. Mostly down and then up on the way out. Usually won't see too many people this time of year and its pretty lush. It will take you out onto the beach with some cool rocks. Usually the Roosevelt elk hang out down there too. Watch out though. this time is of year in is rutting season and the bulls (males) can be aggressive if you get close. Otherwise they tend to hang in the grass after all of that loving.
If you want a longer hike try the azalea trail off the same road. long loop about 8 miles long. -

Re: Any suggestions for up in Arcata?
Mon, August 22, 2005 - 1:10 PMThanks for all the tips - I'll hang on to them for a later trip. I kind of freaked out a bit on Friday morning - the fog is getting to me - it's been extra bad in SF this year - I figured it would not be all that sunnier and warmer up there so I headed in the other direction for some hot, dry weather - just what I needed - photos are here tofuart.com/pix/fogfree
