We must have democracy! We think we have democracy but we don't. We have a democracy on paper.
Democracy should be rule of the people, by the people and for the people. Democracy should mean that we own the society.
But our society is not structured for democracy, so the government and the economy are owned by the corporations.
We have to stop this pretense and democratize the society.
1) Money out of politics, publicly funded elections
2) Proportional representation
3) initiative, referendum and recall in all districts
4) limit the number of radio or tv stations that can be privately owned
5) restoration of the Fairness Doctrine and Section 315 of the broadcast code
6: debate based campaigning
7) Instant Run-off voting
8) NOTA none of the above on ballots
9) elimination of the electoral college
10) voters holiday
11) curbs on lobbyists
these are provisions of democratic structuralism. . .

Re: Independence is not enough!
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 12:24 PMThe powerful filthyrich elite are NOT going to let this happen, not any of it. Why should they change a good thing, eh? So we do it in tiny little ways in our immediate circle of friends and neighbors. It's the best we can do at this point. And no, this isn't enough either but it's better than sitting here bitching about the injustice of it all and doing zero. -

Re: Independence is not enough!
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 1:57 PMif I were a teenager again I might still believe that the world could be changed; that "having a good talk" with someone was meaningful beyond the comraderie of human social bonding through communication. Now I understand how difficult it is for a foursome to decide on a movie to see together. And mostly how the "game" is rigged not by any "outside" force at all - not by corporations or wealthy elite or nation states or the Trilateral Commision but by our own human natures. So simple and so ironic and of course the only thing in this life we can change is ourselves and ourselves is always the last thing we think of to change - the last thing we want to change. It would be funny if it were happening to someone else. Let's change our spouse, the neighborhood, the country, the world - hell, once an a while an articulate beauty pageant winner says it all in words, you know - "i'd like to see world peace and tolerance and all" ha ha ha

Re: Independence is not enough!
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 6:13 PMso your having a good talk is "doing" something and my talk is meaningless
you and your talk and all the billions you have talked before you have made no difference
I am actually doing something, starting a non profit that will help people and it is actually doing something not just blathering on about how terrible it is that most people won't do anything
you ain't changing nothing with your words and you can take that to the bank
In my opinion you and the other useless do-gooders make it much worse by profoundly missing the point -

Congratulations, D. You say you are doing something - starting a non-profit to help people.
When you sling an insult though, be careful, you are preaching to the choir here. Most of the people on this board are DOers, not DO GOODers. We are doing stuff and we come here to bitch among ourselves because we trust the ones who are here. We've heard their stories and we know they are doing stuff.
I don't know if that specific insult of yours was targetted at someone specific here but I can tell you from experience, these are the people who you want on your side because they got the point a long time ago.
