All the cats I've ever had liked to bring me presents, both alive and dead except Gizmo, my ragdoll. I'm not complaining about this as I would prefer not to get those kind of gifts. He always seemed confused when the others would bring in a mouse or bird and he would just stare at it. In fact when I had hamsters and would let them run around he would watch them, but if they started to come in his direction he took off running.
There was one time though when he did try his hand at it. He came running in making that meowing sound they make when they catch something. I had never heard him make that sound before and thought he was sick :) But he looked up at me, very proud of himself with dirt all over his face, and proceeded to drop a live earthworm on the book I was reading. That was the only time he did that in 8 years, but that might be because my cats are indoor cats only now.
So I'm wondering if all or most ragdolls are like this. Do yours hunt?

Re: Wondering if this is a ragdoll trait
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 4:30 AMI've heard that their laid-back nature doesn't make for great mousers. But I'm sure there are exceptions. My ragdoll has lately been stalking a mouse that I think is living under our stove, but so far, she just sits and stares at the stove for hours. She hasn't caught anything, but she may get one someday! : ) -

Re: Wondering if this is a ragdoll trait
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 2:51 PMAwww.... kudos to the little one bringing in the earthworm. Good try! I've seen my calico snap a fly out of the air, so I'm sure she's a good hunter, but my ragdoll doesn't care. I noticed from the beginning that she wasn't much of a jumper with the feather toy. She likes to watch my cockatiel in her cage, but is not a window-watcher like the calico.

Re: Wondering if this is a ragdoll trait
Wed, January 3, 2007 - 12:57 AMThat business with the earthworm is sooooo cute.
My Taj likes to hunt, kinda. He's a rabid window-watcher and a big jumper and chaser for animal-like toys. When I once lost a feeder mouse for my snake he left it dead in the hall. But he's never brought me gifts. And furthermore, he didn't show any interest in the rats living behind my sink. He does seem to be missing some basic hunting instincts. He just likes to play chase. He never stalks.

Re: Wondering if this is a ragdoll trait
Sun, January 28, 2007 - 10:36 AMAll three of my cats hunt.. one more than the other.. my maine coon is the worse.. he'll hunt and bring stuff to me.
My ragdoll, he hunts, and petrolls the house to make sure it's secure and there are no things crawling or running around. Normally if Ky(my ragdoll) does find something living, he kills it right away.. then Bodhi get's all up in his face and takes the thing away. Then they fight for a good few minutes... then Ky ends up bringing whatever it is to me.. so I can toss it away.
I think Ky hunts just because he used to be an inside outside cat.. Bodhi(my maine coon) grew up outside.. so I think that's why he gets whatever.. I mean he littlerly jumped up in the air and grabbed a BAT by his mouth in my house.
Ky of course wanted to get in on the fun.. but Bodhi brought me the bat.. which was still alive...
Ky and Bodhi played with the bat and chopped on his wings.. the bat wasn't happy.. and it shirked at me.. cats wouldn't get away from it.. I had to pick them up and remove them from the back and kick the bat outside the door.
