<<Watermelons contain an ingredient called citrulline that can trigger production of a compound that helps relax the body's blood vessels, similar to what happens when a man takes Viagra, said scientists in Texas, one of the nation's top producers of the seedless variety.>>
I assume they mean the seedless variety of watermelons, not scientists, nor Texans. Although seedless Texans is an intriguing idea.

Re: Get your watermelon on
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 8:23 AMIs that a euphemism, or are you really allergic to melons? -
-
Re: Get your watermelon on
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 8:33 AMI am totally allergic to melons, cantaloupes, honeydews, and (to a much smaller degree) cucumbers. I have a variety of food allergies. -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 8:55 AMIs it safe for you to eat out? -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 9:27 AMYeah, but where did you guys take him to eat? Mom's Best Oatmeal, or La Chica's Gastronomic Explosion?
(I found the evidence of Colorado on his flickr account, but I don't recall there being any pictures of him putting food into his mouth.)

Re: Get your watermelon on
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 11:12 PMI thought watermelon was suppose to be good for lovers, not fighters ;-)
Although they do make great fruit bombs! -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 11:49 PMWell, gee, ummmmmmm.... okay..... that is very true
So now what are we going to do with all these watermelons?
I vote for filling them with vodka and having a party! -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 9:45 AMI'm with you on this. (Are we psychically co-joined twins, or something? What's going on here?)
Check out:

I love this warning:
While a whole mini-watermelon isn't very much to eat by yourself, a whole bottle of vodka is a lot of alcohol to consume -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

*Clearly* they did not grow up anywhere near me and mine [grin]...

Re: Get your watermelon on
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 4:41 PMYes, Torroid, I was thinking that we were cut from the same clothe when I read your comments about coffee! I think we must be JavaSoulMates -- or something... -
-
Re: Get your watermelon on
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 12:35 AMAnd from this thread ... VodkaSoulMates, too.
What brand? -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 8:24 AMI like my tried and true good ole Smirnoff. No fancy flavors or anything unless I'm drinking a Bloody Mary, then the pepper flavored is fine,
-
Re: Get your watermelon on
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 9:03 PMI usually get Smirnoff just because it isn't that expensive. But, I drink about any brand with vodka. It gets mixed, mostly, so I am not so particular. One of my favorite vodka mixes lately is the Raspberry flavored with Cranberry Juice - yum! I also like green apple ice! very nice!
I am not too much of a brand snob, even when it comes to liquor... price is often more of a determinant for me. -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Tue, September 2, 2008 - 9:17 PMYou know, when it comes down to it, vodka is vodka. I'm with you, oh Jenny of the perennial roasted coffee beans (or are those chocolates? either way, they catch my attention every time), unless you drink vodka straight, the actual taste is overwhelmed by whatever it is in it, so unless you drink the Clorox brand, going for good price is probably wise. But then, drinking vodka is not wise to begin with, so ... I'm not sure where this leaves us.
But then I've made stupider (is that a word?) decisions than drinking vodka. Like ... drinking scotch.

Re: Get your watermelon on
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 11:50 PMThe study was done by one researcher who has yet to put out any facts for exactly how much watermelon a person would have to eat in order to be a natural viagra. Also, in order to have any significant gain from this, you must consume watermelon, consistently, for 3 weeks and then continue to eat it to keep the citrulline flowing for an 11.5 % increase.
It's a big stretch and I don't know anyone who would want to eat watermelon that much.
Sorry to be a party pooper on this one, but I looked it up after some kid at work pased on watermelon, as he was worried about the effect it might have on him, lol.

Re: Get your watermelon on
Tue, September 2, 2008 - 9:14 PMShadow, Very nice analysis. It does kind of spoil the mystique, but then you may have saved several of us from overdosing on watermelon. Myself, I was on the way to buying up my own watermelon farm. That's for helping me see the light.
Celery, on the other hand ... -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Tue, September 2, 2008 - 11:16 PMCelery?
Or it's nearest relative..Fennel? -
-
Re: Get your watermelon on
Wed, September 3, 2008 - 12:20 AMDon't know much about fennel. (Don't know that much about celery either, other than how to chew it.) I've thought of fennel mostly as a seasoning or a spice. No? -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Wed, September 3, 2008 - 6:21 AMNope. The bulb is yummy in a salad, or a stir fry. Still has a mildly anise-like flavor, but it goes great with blood oranges in a salad : ). -
-
Re: Get your watermelon on
Wed, September 3, 2008 - 10:01 PMThat actually sounds good ... even though there are two words in there that scare me a little (anise, and blood).
I don't cook much any more, and trying fennel is not a big enough reason to start ... so does anyone know a good place (in the bay area ... no I'm not going to Atlanta to experience fennel, thank you very much ;-)) that has a menu with fennel? That way I can use one of the following lines ...
Hey, babe, I know you said not until hell freezes over, but ... you want to go try some fennel?
Or ...
Hey, dude! We were going to go drinking. You want to go try some fennel instead? -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Fri, September 19, 2008 - 6:07 AMMany higher end Cali-talian places use it. Over here, they often have it in salads at Oliveto, which is very near my house, so I go there for lunch...it's nice, if you're ever in the Rockridge area.
Ha!! Look what came up when I Googled: www.boorah.com/restaurant...-salad.html -

Re: Get your watermelon on
Fri, September 19, 2008 - 7:05 AMHmm. May be up in the bay this weekend (kite festival in SF or visiting Berkley campus with the kid); I may have to hunt down a salad.
