and i've been saying that it's coming out now... i think since - well ... let's see.
November, 2007
which puts me just about 6 months behind schedule. and anyone who knows me... well - they just know that that's how i roll. 6 months behind schedule is just about the target date. if i've been saying something for 6 months, then you know it's just going to happen any minute.
but the thing is that michelle and I shot a DVD in november, but it turned out to have lots of sound problems, and some camera problems and just some things that i wished i had noticed and not done, or wished i had noticed and HAD done, and now i want to redo the whole thing, since i have a chance to go back and fix all the problems. and isn't that what evryone really wants? a second chance?
But now I ask myself - 'does the world really need another beginner instructional DVD?"
and wouldn't it be so much more fun to do some advanced choreography or something more interesting... so i'm posting this to find out...
?DOES the world really need another beginner instructional DVD?"
my perspective is completely contaminated by being bellydance obsessed and crazed. i have no idea about what is real and what is only living in my head.
and anyway - i will definitely and very probably have some sort of instructional dvd for sale by...
i'm going to say..... june.
NO ..
JULY.
definitely august maybe.

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 8:27 AMI think it's rare to find someone who can REALLY TRULY teach the basics in a way that is solid and easy to understand. If you want to scale that mountain, go fer it :)
Otherwise, I would DELIGHT in an int/adv choreography/improv theory DVD from you. omg! -

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 9:34 AMI don't think I'm a good representation of a "real world".... but remember myself getting the first BD dvd in my life - and I wish it was yours and not Veena&Neena. So I think they need it. The advanced one is needed even more! so it's nice to do both - beginner will be purchased by real world people and advanced - by dancers. This way you'll get everyone covered...

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 1:02 PMI agree with Lisa. The world does not need another dime-a-dozen beginner belly dance DVD; it's pretty saturated out there. But if you've got yourself a fairly innovative beginner DVD, say one that presents the information in some fresh, clear way that no one's thought to use before, then I say go for it!
The world DEFINITELY needs more advanced DVDs with tricky choreographies or difficult veil/sword/iguana tricks. I for one would love a really good sword DVD so I could learn some structure to my sword dancing, rather than just screwing around with it and hoping it looks good. ;-) -

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 2:25 PMI like choreography dvds more than plain technique ones...
and I like the idea how Jillina recently did it - a series of three choreo dvds: intro, taxim and drum solo. Or the way she did it before - a series of three choreography dvds with increasing level of difficulty (kind of stage 1, stage 2 and 3).

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 11:50 AMI just got more spam today about more beginner belly dance DVDs from amazon. There is a glut on beginner and workout DVDs. I think the belly dance community could certainly use some more quality advanced technique and choreography DVDs. -

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 12:23 PMI'm pretty sure i agree.... i think it will just be more advanced stuff and choreography. -

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:39 PMYay! I appreciate choreo -- especially from you, but I'm not sure anyone noticed that I actually said "improv/choreography theory". That's a biggun and quite different from presenting and teaching choreography itself... I would sooo love to hear what you'd have to say on that matter.

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 6:14 AMSalam Sandra,
I feel I have to answer because 1st of all, it s me who s brought up the topic twice I believe - at least! - ever since I heard you were doing one. I did have the feeling I might be bugging you, that is why I asked twice only (good - EXCELLENT - self control for me, believe it or not!).
And secondly I am pretty much of a beginner.
I ve somehow picked up a few moves due to my family background, have learnt them more culturally than technically I d say.
I own about 30 beginner dvds and am not sooo fond of most of them - so far.
Not that they re not nice. They just dont get me started so much. Michelle s look great, but I thought I d go for the more energetic/technique/fitness ones once I ve had some basic dancing fun and experience. I feel not ready for them with my existing movement knowledge/dance experience to be honest :)
Actually, what s lacking in all of the dvds i own is FUN. Please do not bother to do another one having 1. rib cage movements: slides, circles, bumps 2. hip movments: the full hip circle, hip thrusts, popand lock, shimmy. 3. put it all together-..
none of these videos are especially fun - at least not to me, to be honest.
I d love to have a beginner s dvd which is FUN. I like Shamira s by the way. The only one I actually do so far :), I hope to grow into my other dvds ;))
I admire your style a lot, fell in love with your dance when i saw your Tales of the Sahara youtube video!
If someone can do a FUN beginner s video I think its you :))
Maybe a class with your students, with some improvisation, nice music, a bit more original moves than the average beginners dvd that would be what I d love to buy.
Even if I have so many dvds already :))
I dont know if you can relate to that..
otherwise I guess the market is already quite saturated with the average beginner dvds.
Unless you maybe did something like Shamira did, technique lessons with 2 or 3 dances you teach, with your style and signature moves. I guess you could not go wrong with that since your style is very distinct.
Hope that helps!
I guess I m about the only beginner here, anyway, so a rare species, TARGET group member :D
take care sandra, all the best for your project, whatever it will be, i m sure it will be fine inshaAllah.
best wishes

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 9:35 AMdina, even though your a beginner...you can still learn a great deal with intermidate/advanced dvds. Actually probably better to get those anyway since you already know the basics as you mentioned. -

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 11:00 AMhi!!
thanks for the suggestion..
i do indeed find the beginner ones dull in many parts - but i think it is more due to the repetitive use of the movements - over and over..
the reason i shy away from intermediate ones is i ve got bad knees (one from a sports injury years ago, the other one is beginning to get weaker due to overstrain put on it while dancing (or walking) i guess). that is why i fear "skipping steps" and doing movements the"wrong way" in fast movements and transitions.. and stick to beginner so far :) -

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 1:08 AMhmmmm.
what you've said...... it's... its...
an instructional DVD that is also 'fun'.
I had not considered that, honestly. I will spend some time thinking about that.
I suppose next you'll say that you would also like it to be 'interesting'.
perhaps even 'informative'.
the challenges are daunting. the demands of the public!....... i had no idea.
I'm just kidding. everyone sounds so serious. I would like to do something fun, and honestly, your posting gave me an idea. ... so i hope you end up liking it. really i think it's unavoidable to do a beginner dvd at some time... if not because i'm interested, then at least for something to hand to my students and yell at them to practice. but i think i'll probably do a few more advanced ones first.
thanks for all your input and support. I'll send you all advanced copies. :) -

Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:49 AMhello :))
actually neither interesting nor informative came to my mind at least :)
i meant "fun" in the sense of something different. fresher than most beginner videos which show the teacher, the same moves as usually (like virginia s instructional, like amira mor, like bdss, like bellyqueen, they all follow the chest/hip/shimmy kind of routine.
it s less DANCIN than a mere collection of steps. maybe that s what a beginner dvd is supposed to be like - and i just dont like that?
but, on the other hand, if there are at least 10 quite good ones like that already, it s probably key to find yourself a niche.
michelle has found one she s great at with the fitness focus..
i m searchin for an instructor who teaches love for the music and the dance.
you are very unique in your snakiness and softness - very lady like. if there s a way of puttin a bit of this uniqueness into a beginner s dvd, and do something a bit different from the moves everybody does, i guess it will be just fine :)
no need for inventing the wheel once more as a German saying goes :))))
haha now i m supercurious about your idea - will have a hard time dominating my curiosity i guess!! -
-
Re: So i have this instructional DVD coming out.....
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 12:21 AMPlease create an advanced instructional DVD. You are such an amazing dancer! I would love to have a DVD where you shared some of your more advanced techniques, combinations, etc!
