Join us for BM07 !!!!

Welcome back Random Postcarders and welcome first timers!

You're viewing this thread because you might be interested in joining our project. Read on to get an idea of what it's all about - have patience with my wordiness. And read old threads for more background. Join and post if you think you want to participate. All are welcome! The whole idea behind this playa project is that it's interactive, inexpensive, low-maintenance, low expectation, and lots of fun. We keep the 'rules' to a minimum... all I ask is that you observe the basic principle of how Random Postcards works. You are sending postcards to random strangers, from random strangers at Burningman. Beyond that, you're free to apply your own style, and your own creativity.

Some stuff to know...

I've done this project on my own many times at Playa Del Fuego and twice at Burningman. Not only was it fun and really well received, but it was a great vehicle to approach new people, and participate more overall. If you are a newbie, or shy about walking into strange camps and saying 'hi', this is the perfect project for you!

Last year I opened this project up and invited others to participate for the first time. Wow what a great response! The goal is to not be too structured, or function as a group... you can do this independently, or with someone else in the group, whichever works best for you. Last year a few of us met early in the week and kicked it off at a 'Postcard Swap Party' then we each went off and did our own thing. It was a great start and I'd like to have a Swap Party Kickoff again this year.

Who doesn't love recieving a postcard in the mail? Who doesn't have at least a few kind, funny or insane sentiments they'd be happy to share with a random stranger? Who doesn't get a charge out of a visit to the Black Rock City Post Office?

Random Acts of Postcards (RAoP)... here's how it works:

You are the Postcard Person. Bring a random assortment of unused postcards to the playa. You walk up to a random person, anyone. Walk straight into a camp and ask them to participate in Random Act of Postcards. Tell them... they will be sending a postcard to, or receiving a postcard from, another random person on the playa. You don't know who it will be, and neither do they. Someone will volunteer to participate... they always do.

It's totally up to you how you want to organize your postcards, but I've found it easiest to keep 3 piles of cards in ziplocs...

1) cards that need a message to be written
2) cards that need a recipient address
3) completed cards ready to be mailed

Then you pull out a pile of postcards...

If you want your random person to RECIEVE a postcard, have them close their eyes and choose from a pile that is blank, or has messages already written on them. Don't let them see the image on the card, or the written message. It'll be a surprise until they get it in the mail. Cover the message, if there is one, and have them self address the card (playa address if you can get it to the post office by Friday so they'll receive it at their camp). Take the postcard back, thank them, and be on your way. Or hang around and chat! You just made a new friend!

If you want your random person to SEND a postcard, have them close their eyes and choose from a pile that is blank, or that already has recipient names on them. Let them see the image on the card they've chosen, sometimes it gives them inspiration for a message to write. Flip the card and have them write a message. If there is already a recipient address on the postcard, cover it up. You don't want them to know who it's going to. It's random. If they sign their name and camp on their message, maybe the recipient will come say hello once they get the card? You're connecting people!

I have found it helpful to have post it notes handy to cover up the writing on the postcard I don't want them to see. Early in the week, I let people choose if they want to send or receive, but as half-completed cards start piling up, I don't give them a choice... my goal is to get cards finished and mailed!

When you have a stack of completed cards, bring them to the BRCPO (near Center Camp). You'll need to have postage stamps for the cards going out to real world addresses, and be sure to bring goodies for the BRCPO folks... they can be rather surly :-)

I know it sounds confusing at first - and I probably make it sound more complicated than it really is. But once you get the idea, it's really very simple. And once you get started, you develop a schtick and it's a lot of fun.

There's not a lot or preparation needed for this project, but we do have some good ideas to share and help it grow. Join this tribe if you are interested in participating, or just want to know more.

Woot woot! Me so happy!

xoxo
Dusty

Ooooh!! I love this idea!! I will turn my campmates on to this idea too. We have a small theme camp, but this sounds like a good way to meet some folks while we're out and about!

Thanks for your wonderful positive energy Dusty!!

For sure I'll see you on the playa this year Dillo, but remember... you can do this project anytime, anywhere at BMan. You don't need to be at the Swap party or hook up with other Postcard folks to do it. Although it sure does make it more fun!

    I'm in!

We are doing our coffeeshop again this year, and I am definitely into doing postcard with our "patrons". I brought cards last year, but never got around to it with all the other things going on...this year, I think I will design an apron to wear while working the coffee, that also has slots in it for all the materials related to RAoPs. Once I have the apron, I won't put those postcards on the backburner (so to speak).

Do you think it's okay to use those free postcards that you see outside of bathrooms in restaurants? They usually have some kind of ad on them, be I could burnerize them before sending....
    • Re: Join us for BM07 !!!!

      Tue, April 24, 2007 - 5:53 PM
Yes, you can use postcards that have printing on the back already!

Since you'll be collecting messages and addresses from people, you need to have space on the back for them to write. You can cover up the pre-printed promos on the back with blank labels. I got a bunch from work. Some work places also have blank labels they use for CD burning, they're a good size too.

I have a bunch of small labels that say "You've just received a Random Act of Postcards". Anyone who can make it to the Postcard Swap Party on the playa is welcome to them. It's just a small way to associate the project name with the card. Not necessary, but a nice touch.
  • Reality Check.

    Tue, April 24, 2007 - 6:31 PM
Just to give everyone a realistic idea of how many postcards you might want or need.

Of course, this all depends on how dedicated you are, personally, to getting your postcards done. Given the nature of the playa, and how easily my attention is diverted, I've found that getting through even 10 postcards a day can be a challenge. It also depends on my mood. And this is mostly a daytime project - but hey, if you can pull off postcards at night, more power to you!

Remember... one postcard is 2 people (sender and receiver)... so 10 cards means engaging 20 people into the project. It's fun, for sure! But you should anticipate that you'll be easily sidetracked. And the beauty of this project is that it's okay to get sidetracked! There are no expectations!

Plus, you need to get your ass to the BRC Post Office - which is a whole joyful experience in and of itself - so I tend to stop postcarding for the day in time to make it to the BRCPO. For myself, I'd be super happy if I actually got 50 postcards done in the course of the week. And you should try to get them all mailed by time the Post Office closes on Saturday. You might be able to mail stuff out on Sunday, but I wouldn't rely on it.

For this reason, I tend to bring postcards that are all different. I like having a varied selection. I love being gifted cards to use, and love getting Burningman cards from the BRCPO... but I tend not to have too many duplicates. I like random cards :-) Part of my love for this project is finding and buying unusual postcards. But that's just me. I encourage everyone to use cards that you love, each one is a gift. And remember the real joy is in meeting people on the playa and connecting them with each other.

    Oooh... on another note.

One thing I've noticed more at Burningman than at my Regional. Big camps tend to want to use our postcards to 'advertise' their camp events. I try to encourage people NOT to do that. I'd much rather they write a more personal message to their random recipient. At first, I found myself sending postcards that were an invite to a party that, by time the card got mailed, the party was over. I felt like using the postcard as 'theme camp publicity' was an easy out. I challenged senders to engage themselves more personally into the postcard they were sending. And it worked, every time. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to get people to participate :-)

Hey all. Placement will be announced soon and then we'll schedule a Postcard Swap party so we can meet and hug each other on the playa. Also... I'm going to send a few random postcards of my own this year. Once placement is announced, you can mail postcards from the default world to the playa and they'll get delivered during Burningman! Takes Random Postcards to a whole new level, huh?

How cool would it be if, as a group, we tried to send a postcard to as many registered camps as possible? We could each take a handful of them and just send the camp a random postcard. Maybe we could charge the recipient of the card with performing a task? Like...

whomever reads this first must hug the nearest person to them.

        or

the recipient of this card must perform one favor at the request of the mail carrier who delivered it.

        Hmm?

          Wanna cause a little mayhem?

This is just a thought... but how bout if we send random postcards with a message that reads something like...

This card entitles the bearer to some kind of treat... I don't know what.

And we give them instructions to bring the postcard to a particular camp and ask for something. The camp we send them to will have no idea we are sending people their way, or what they are talking about when they ask for their 'treat'.

          Confusion and mayhem ensues.

Okay, I'm feeling a little cheeky today.

I love the mischief in it.

Me too. The more I think about it, the more fun I think it would be.

So what camp can we target? DON'T post suggestions publicly just yet! But think about it. We'll have to keep it a Random Postcard top secret. And I'm thinking a performance/reward type of thing would be hysterical. Some kind of performance that anyone can do, and any camp would enjoy... and a reward that might actually get honored by the an unsuspecting theme camp.

              Just for example...

The bearer of this card is entitled to one of the following (at the discretion of the giver):

              a Sunscreen rubdown
              an Icy Cold Beverage
              Two minutes of unadulterated admiration

To receive your reward, present this card along with any of the following (at your discretion):

              a Really Great Joke
              Something Green
              a Display of Body Art

              Oh, this could be fun.

    Another idea:

What about asking people sending the postcards to write down a secret? It could be the deepest, darkest secret that they've told no one, or it could be that they really don't like the taco meat their campmates keep forcing on them...The person receiving the postcard wouldn't know who it came from, but they would know their secret....the person sending the postcard could drop it into a bag of other postcards so I/we wouldn't know their secret either (though when you go to mail em you could be the playa's biggest secret holder - just you wouldn't know who's secrets!!)

Just a thought....I somehow like the idea of broadcasting your fears and secrets as a way to purge them, but retaining the anonymity of the playa...

Yeah, I'd heard of the postsecret project before too. I think someone suggested it last year and we sorta felt like it had been done already. Of course, as the Random Postcard person, you could make that suggestion to people who fill out your postcards. Sometimes people need a little nudge. I usually tell people to pretend they are writing a postcard to a dear friend who wants to hear from you... what would you like to tell them?

Dusty, I love your mayhem-inducing ideas!

I can't wait to play the postcard game again this year! Last year I only got through about ten cards all week, and still it was so much fun! The funny thing was that I kept ended up involving more of my friends than strangers, so when it was all said and done, my friends who didn't lknow eachother were all getting notes from one another! Then when the recipient wanted to know more about the sender, usually due to some meaningful or abstract message on the card, I could actually tell them a lil bit about the person! Whether already a friend of mine or not, everyone who played this game was enchated and it was a total blast being responsible for so many people recieving playa mail, a thing everyone knows about but few receive... the best part is that I didn't have to think of stuff or reasons to write! People wrote eachother the most beautiful and sometimes absurd things... and often the recipient would late tell me that the message was perfect for what they were going through or doing at the time... interesting!!

I just picked up some cool free postcards from the local galleries advertising various shows... your blank labels idea is a great and esy way to cover up that writing! Way easier than what I would have ended up doing, I am sure. :)

Post the addy, date and time of the Swap and I will see you then, darlings! Dusty, I am sure I will have more time to chill at the Swap this year, and also I want to get my bf involved in the game with his own set of cards cus he is the one who is shyer than me, and I could tell he was interested in what I was doing with people by the end of the week and he had seen the outcome.

This is such a great movement, go DUSTY!! Thanks for this gift!!

Dusty, will there be an opportunity to pick up any extra postcards that folks might have if we don't bring our own? I ask only because I am working on a theme camp and keep forgetting to pick up postcards. But I think this would be fun to do for a few hours and would love to participate. If not, I'll just have to the RAoP cheerleader!

YES! Once theme camp placement is announced, we'll schedule a 'postcard swap' meet & greet for us to get together share postcards, stamps, ideas, whatever. Stay tuned!

Also, the BRCPO always has postcards for the giving. If you're really nice to them (cuz you know how surly they can be) they might give you some :-)

Does anyone have the proper address to send postcards or letters TO Burning Man...??

How do you address it to get to the Burning Man event?

How do you address it to get to a particular camp.. and person?

Previously, you could send mail to:

                      Theme Camp Name
                      c/o BRCPO
                      Burning Man
                      Black Rock City, NV 89412

In the address, you need to specify the camp location and if possible a persons name. I'll look into it to make sure this address is still valid (though I think it is).

Now that the theme camp listing has been made 'public' we can plan our Postcard Swap and shenanigans! Gimme a day or two to recoup... I just got back from a trip and need to get my thoughts together.
