I read an article in a '07 newsletter by Zehara Nachash (MED in NE). SOmeone made a rude comment to her when she danced with her snakes.

I think snake-dancing has a long history in BD and is a beautiful way to share a friendship with an animal. Nothing cruel about it. Maybe someone here has another opinion? I thought it might be a good discussion topic here.

It depends on the dancer! LOL Seriously though I own 10 snakes and dance with some of them. NOT ALL SNAKE SWILL BE GOOD FOR PERFORMING, depending on thier personality, age, and type of snake. I have several performances on youtube under Selimah or Selimah and Osiris. I am very gentle with my snakes as they are dance partners not props.
But I have seen videos of snake dancers that are very close to animal cruelty. So it depends on the dancer.
It irks me to see a dancer spinning with one or shaking one senseless, or holding a large snake with one hand and not supporting it properly, and the letting it dangle off on shoulder to the floor. How would they like to be held that way. How about I put you over my shoulder and spin you around 4-5 times or hold you up by your neck with your feet off the ground , you get my point.
Does this help? is this what you are looking for???
I love my animals, all of them and would never do anything to cause them stress or harm.
Check my profile I have lots of pics of them.

As previously stated, it depends on the dancer. Regardless of whether or not it's cruel, I am against it. I think it sends the public the wrong message- that snakes are just objects here for our entertainment and enjoyment, rather than creatures who really belong out in the wild. And although many snake dancers strive to provide their snakes with the best care and respect them as living beings, there will be people out there who just want to use snakes as a gimmick, so they buy cheap ones, don't care for them properly, mistreat them, etc. It could possibly be okay at haflas or small gatherings where the dancer knows everyone and can make it clear that it is an animal, not just a prop. But for the general public, I'm definitely against it. Plus, I have yet to see any evidence that snake dancing is a historically or ethnically correct part of bellydance.

I agree with Jen. I know there are dancers out there who have great respect for their animals and take excellent care of them, but there is just too much potential for many others to jump on the bandwagon of the trend and think dancing with a snake would "be cool". He/she they buys one and doesn't know how to handle it or care for it properly. Then, the dancer/snake performance goes badly, he/she becomes frustrated with the snake and regrets owning it after already making a commitment to take responsibility for its care.

I wouldn't call it purposefully cruel, necessarily--just too much that can go wrong in inexperienced hands. Not worth it IMO. There are many other beautiful props to use out there.

I would have to respectfully disagree. I think you have a valid point about trends and people buying snakes because it's "cool". But, I also think that will happen whether or not dancers dance with snakes. All it takes is seeing someone who is "cool" with a snake and voila, everyone wants a snake (or ferret, or iguana, or pit bull, or whatever is the fashionable pet at the moment)......

Most respectable dancers who perform with snakes (as partners, btw, not "props") also attempt to educate their audiences. They are open to questions. They try to tell people about the responsibilities of caring for snakes.....

Darkdove Selimah, while I have never seen her dance in person (only on video), is a perfect example of a respectable dancer. She is always open to answering questions and, from what I've seen, if someone has rosy glasses on about snake ownership, she will tell them the real truth (good and bad).

Another is Serpentessa (who has a wonderful instructional video on snake dancing).

Neither of these women treat or consider their snakes as anything less than a full partner in the dance. And, anyone watching a performance by them would see that concern and respect that they show their partner.

On the other hand, any Schmo can go to a pet expo or reptile show, see a snake being held by someone who is getting attention and decide that's COOL. I don't think bellydancing with (or without) snakes is going to change that disappointing aspect of human nature.

Sadly, animal abuse is not limited to snakes and snake dancing.

I personally know only one person who dances with snakes, and she takes very good care of them. But they are ANIMALS, LIVING BREATHING BEINGS and deserved to be treated as such.

          Even tho they scare me...
