I saw the earlier discussion about dancing with snakes and just wanted to throw a twist in... I have long had a fantasy about doing canine freestyle (dances with dogs) and combining that with my belly dancing. Unfortunately my current dog knows all too well about my two left feet and probably wouldn't be a happy participant, but maybe my next one.
Don't have any real good examples to share for this particular combo, but for a taste, see www.youtube.com/watch and for a better example of freestyle, see my favorite here: www.youtube.com/watch

Re: Is Canine Freestyle cruelty to Animals?
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 8:36 PMI was just thinking about you dancing with a dog as I read your other thread.
Working dogs crave working, they are intelligent and want to do something and need to do something with all that energy. I feel if you found the right dance partner you could have a Belly Dancing dog. I would love to see this.

Re: Is Canine Freestyle cruelty to Animals?
Sat, June 14, 2008 - 9:51 AMI don't think it's cruelty at all, and is probably very good for the dogs since it provides enrichment. That's assuming, of course, that proper training techniques are used, which I know you will since you're a trainer. Since dogs are domesticated, social, intelligent animals bred to interact with humans, this would be great for them. Snakes are wild animals who belong in the wild ;)

Re: Is Canine Freestyle cruelty to Animals?
Sun, August 3, 2008 - 12:16 PMI agree, there is nothing cruel about "playing" with your dog, and that's how the dog will see it. The only cruelty would be in improper training techniques, such as punishing for not doing a trick right. But considering you're even asking, I'm sure you treat your furry friends as well as you'd treat another person, so I'd bet you only train by rewarding a good job.
you go, girl! :)
p.s. that's collie and Groucho were HI-larious! I love it when animals play "tricks" on their people pets!! :D
