If you had to evacuate and could only take one belly dance CD with you that had to last you the rest of your life and you could never own another CD, which would it be?

I'm not even ready to answer that question myself. I fell into a panic when I thought about it. My first answer would be a compilation CD I did myself of all my favorite songs. But that answer is not allowed.
A class I'm in is using it for a recital, but because the instructor found it on an unlabeled compilation cd, we don't know who the artist might be, never mind what it might be about. It's a very shaabi song. I've tried googling but haven't come up with anything, apart from learning a little about Shobra :-)

Here is a thought I was pondering and would love to get some input back.

Let us say you are a dance troupe/performer of some sort. However, you are not so huge that you command a fee when you get invited to dance at gigs. You dance and the host videotapes the show.

Is it good form on the part of the host to offer a copy of the performance tape free since they aren't paying the performers to come dance? Or more to the point, is it tacky or in bad form to charge anything other than the price of a DVD disc to get a copy?

My thought was that if I pay my gas to get to your gig, put on make-up, and then perform for no pay, and you are charging people to come in to your show, the least you could do is give me a free DVD of the performance. Giving me an order form to order a copy at $20 seems wrong somehow.

Or am I wrong?

Lucy is extremely helpful and she and her staff are really dedicated to help you get the most of your trip.
The festival agency also only has a limited number of rooms; which are higher cost pyramid views or palace rooms. Other hotel options offered through the agency are the Meridian, Sofitel or Grand Pyramid. I don't know how close they are to the festival. Maybe someone here does and can post?

If you're curious to see what other Cafepress shops I have, a full list is at www.shira.net/shopping.htm

These Cafepress shops, as well as the Amazon-based bookstore, video store, and music store at the above link are the sole source of funding that pays for the Shira.net web site to exist. I incur several hundred dollars every year in expenses for hosting fees, software upgrades, etc., and these shops generate the income needed to pay for all that. My web site couldn't exist without the support of everyone who buys my merchandise. So, a big THANK YOU to everyone who has purchased something from my shops in the past!

This is just an extension of Jamil's question regarding stage names. I've been wondering about this for some time now, and this question is directed at Non-Arabs who perform and have adopted Arabic stage names. I'm thinking, if I took up the Waltz - would I need an Austrian name? Or if I took up Tango, a Spanish name?

I'm curious; please tell me if you have a stage name, and if it's in Arabic, and why.

I searched for a long time to find it and thought I had found it, Digi Ya Rebaba, at the Smithsonian music archives. I ordered it from them, only to find that it was the original version that is at a slower (and boring) tempo.

So now I am again looking for the modern, upbeat version. Anyone know who sang the modern version of it? Is it available anywhere?

Dear Jamil,
I know this is something that has happened to dancers all over, and feel that we need to know when someone is calling us a "whore", etc. in Arabic, and what the proper response should be. (raise an eyebrow and walk away? tell them off?) I feel uncomfortable asking this, but have seen posted where the dancer was called something nasty with a smile (like it was a complement), and so she thanked him and only later found out what was really said. I really don't want a "trash mouth", but would really appreciate knowing what is being said to us. as a native speaker, would you mind letting us know both some of the common insults and how to respond (like a lady).
personally i dont find it neccessary to know if someone is speaking ill of me unless its to my face, but thats my opinion ofcorse.
i wont post anything on here for fear that it could get in the hands of some random google searcher, or so that i look like some perverted being as i pride in being a gentleman. lol
i think the best thing for me to do is to type up some of the common words, and email them to people who send me personal messages with their email adresses.

so far i have come up with:

*interaction: dancers alternate solos per 8 bars
*mirroring: completing the same movements in unison
*crossing over: travelling in order to swap positions
*push/pull: travelling towards other dancer, both completing the same step
*opposite illusion: having one dancer do one thing while other dancer does the same thing on opposite side of their body. Or changing levels so one dancer is standing other is on floor and then alternate.

are there any others that can be suggested for duos?

They supply to papers all across Canada. Well... apparently the newspaper in Winnipeg thought we were somewhat newsworthy, though they have changed my quotes. Following the link gets the story and a pic of Viraj himself:

Winnipeg Sun today. Here is the link for the article:
http://www.winnipegsun.com/News/Canada/2007/03/19/3781931-sun.html

Men enter hip circles
Break into belly dancing

By STEVE LILLEBUEN, CP
(Jason Scott, CP)

EDMONTON -- Despite the odd looks, laughter and sometimes outright
hostility, a handful of Canadian men have embraced belly dancing as
their chosen career path, shaking up a gender stereotype that had kept
the art form exclusive to the gyrations of the female hip.

"When I started out I felt like a freak, but I was doing it for fun so
it didn't matter," says Viraj Wanigasekera, 32, who stepped into the
spotlight of male belly dancing eight years ago in Edmonton.

"It's been a long journey of ups and downs with a pattern of barriers
and eventual breakthroughs."

Viraj says he's the only professional male belly dancer between
Vancouver and Toronto, and there are only a half-dozen across Canada.

He began belly dancing after a female friend invited him to a dance
competition. When he was told men could belly dance too, and used to
perform with women hundreds of years ago, he was intrigued.

He now performs regularly at various restaurants and festivals while
teaching his own belly dance and fitness classes -- after years of
training, he says, to seek legitimacy in a female-dominated art form.

It hasn't been a smooth transition to success.

'FINE LINE'

"You walk a fine line as a male dancer, and if you're performing for a
very public venue you better be ready for verbal insults and
derogatory comments," Viraj says with a sigh.

"Men here are valued for the size of their wallets, so you deal with a
lot of those traditional male stereotypes that are extremely narrow
and often restrictive."

Rob Galbraith, who uses the stage name Valizan, says he has
experienced similar hostility in Toronto -- although not to the extent
of Viraj, because metropolitan audiences are more accepting than those
found in smaller centres.

Yet Galbraith admits he has still found himself battling for respect.

"I can train as much as I want and, as an artist, I don't think I get
my due," he says. "Because (audiences) look at me and say, 'It's a guy
that's dancing. Oh my God.' "

"They flip out over the fact that it's a male belly dancing and they
ignore the dancing itself."

While winning over audiences has been one issue, these gender-bending
hip-shakers have also fought for recognition from members of the dance
community.

Denise Enan, who's been teaching belly dancing for 32 years, remembers
seeing a man belly dance for the first time and not knowing what to
think. "I still think it's a very feminine kind of dancing, but lots
of men do it now," she said from her Ottawa dance studio.

Galbraith, who turned to professional belly dancing after he lost his
job as a Toronto journalist, says gaining respect from musicians who
are used to performing with female dancers has been difficult -- but
that's slowly changing.

"They're willing to give you one chance and if you mess it up they
don't give you a second one," he says.
Many dancers (and I'm talking Raks Sharqi I'm not even getting into Tribal) don't shimmy anymore. I see a lot of traveling steps, spins, a hip drop here, a hip drop there, hair spinning etc, but no shimmies! A shimmy may be thrown in as an accent but it seems to me to be the exception and not the rule. And I've been watching videos from various countries (excluding Eygpt). No matter what country, the basic style of dance seems the same more external movement and less internal.

To me, the shimmy is the basic of belly dance. When I'm critiquing a dancer that is the very first thing I look for, controlled shimmies that follow the beat. Now all I see are extreme isolations. Whatever happened to hizzi ya wiz or shake like a goose?

I don’t see the big whoop that everyone makes about Samia Gamal.
Even for her time she was far behind what many other dancers had achieved in bodily movements and technique.
I admit she was graceful and added alot of ballet styled movements into her work and her isolations are defined... but I mean seriously, this is Belly dance!!! How about some of that!

Give Me Tahia ANYDAY!
Now there is a woman who was as rough as she was gentle. Expressive as she was controlled. And could she shimmy? HELL YES! She was the mother if it in my opinion. From what I can see she seems to be the first dancer that went out of their way to create travelling steps that use a continual shimmy.

This is my opinion ofcorse... but if I had to choose between the two... Tahia Carioca would be it. I could watch her move for hours and with every retake I would still learn something new.

I'm not really looking for a number. For those of you who don't know me, I've been dancing for 27 years. I just recently started teaching after retiring from the stage. In my beginning class, I teach approximately 25 steps that I consider "basic". This doesn't even begin to address the wide variety and range of steps that I personally use in most of my dancing.

I recently subbed for another teacher for an "intermediate" class. These girls knew only "half" of the steps I used in my beginner class. One girl, had been taken lessons for 7 years from various teachers. The steps she knew she did very well. But she had a very limited range of steps.

So, my question, or issue (actually I think it is more an issue than a question) is this: Isn't it easier to become a proficient dancer if there are only 25 steps to learn v. 100+ steps? I'll probably be bashed by some tribal dancers if they read this tribe, but from what I see, there is a limited vocabulary of steps. And really, I'm not picking on tribal dancers, because most of what I like to watch is "raks sharqi". I see very basic steps from most dancers. Even some of the famous and the great.

So my point is, if you only know a limited number of steps, it is much easier to become accomplished and proficient in those steps because all you do is practice those steps over and over and over. But a dancer who has a more vast knowledge of steps may be great at some and not so great at others. So, who is the better the dancer? The dancer who can do 20 steps with perfect execution, or the dancer who can do 200 steps some good and some not so good?

The reason I bring this up is because my teacher, Princess Madiha, is constantly creating steps to go with specific music. Her style is very unique and even though most of her students go on to become very successful professional dancers, very few, can actually capture her style and master her steps. They capture the basic then basically stop there!

My absolute favorite dancer, (other than Madiha) is Souheir Zaki. But, when I actually stop and analyze her, she has a very limited range of steps. What she does, she does very very well. Another example is Nadia Gamal. My goodness can she shimmy. But when I analyzed her show, she does one shimmy repeatedly!!!! But she does it like no one else can!

So what do you all think?

(Okay, I know, I'm being bugged to post a youtube clip so you guys can see how I dance but frankly I don't know how to convert an old video to youtube. Any advice would be appreciated! But between you and me I'm kind of frightened based on a lot of negative comments I've seen on very good dancers! )

Thoughts?

i read a post by someone on tribe that said "i am not a fan of male dancers..." and it got me thinking, why?
What made me a bit more confused is that this woman was an actual belly dancer herself.
in my own opinion, i think that all Belly dancers, regardless of age, sex or nationality should support each other. God knows us male dancers don’t have it easy in this society...
After all Belly dance is a dance of Art and emotional expression, not an erotically exotic dance for females to entice the mystery of the east.

This is an advanced CD that has a complete choreographed 12 minute routine to Setrak's Song "Samara", Setrak #21. This is a "kick ass" routine and highly aerobic.

Because this is an advanced CD miminal time is spent on the CD in actually breaking down the steps. Due to a production problem Madiha was unable to use the footage in which she did break down the steps. I was brought in after the filming to help salvage what was left. (LONG STORY!) I do a verbal breakdown of the steps on the video but unfortunately we do not have a visual step by step breakdown of each individual step as it was too costly to refilm. I'm pointing this out now, because I already know I'll be getting the emails !

However, to compensate for this, CD includes an instructional brochure that does have a step by step breakdown and an English/Arabic song translation. There are 75 steps to this routine, and dozens of shimmy variations. Princess Madiha is known as the "shimmy queen".

The video is 2 hours long and includes a performance by some of Madiha's students and in interview with Princess Madiha.

Madiha will also be re-releasing her beginning video that was filmed in the 1980's. That video does not teach a routine but instead breaks down some of Princess Madiha's basic steps one by one. It also includes a performance by Madiha and 3 of her top students at the time.

For those of you who are not familar with Princess Madiha you may go to her website: www.princessmadiha.com for information or to order the DVD. Clips of the DVD are also posted on the website.

I just came across a couple of clips of Amani. I hadn't seen these before. Thank goodness for kirabellydancer!
this is Sabah (Long Blonde hair) who is about 89 years old, and apart from Oum Kalthoum, fairouz and Warda, she is one of the most famous female singers ever in the Arab world!

this is a remake of all her older songs! my heart dropped when i heard the first song (note: the song that is sung in the begining when the girl is picked up, is the first song that attracted me to Arabic music back in my younger days, and developed my passion.) i love the Music, i cant stop dancing to it.

the drag queen with grey hair is Bassam Feghally. He is HILARIOUS! famous for doing Parodies of famous female singers and entertainers. you should see his dina impression! lol
* Zaqouq al-Midaqq (Al Maddak Alley). Stars Shadia.

If you're wanting to buy any of these, I got my copies from www.fineartfilm.com . Even though they're located in the UK, it was very easy for me to order from the US, and my DVD's arrived quickly. They all come with English subtitles - I think they all have French, too. The subtitles appear on the DVD subtitle track, so you have to enable them in order to see them.

I have also put an opinion poll on my site for the new documentary, Reel Bad Arabs. It is based on the book by Jack Shaheen of the same name. It's on the same page as the link above, under the documentary category.

As I prepare my "Dance in Egyptian Cinema" presentation for the International Belly Dance Conference of Canada in April, I'm spending time on research. One thing I have noticed in my research is that it's MUCH easier to find Samia Gamal movies with English subtitles than it is ones starring Tahia Carioca.

Now, I realize that in 1949 Egypt's King Farouk declared Samia Gamal to be the National Dancer of Egypt, so she certainly was significant, and even today she remains much loved. So I can readily understand why her movies are now being released with English subtitles.

But, why isn't Tahia Carioca being given more visibility? The only movie I was able to find of hers at www.rashid.com was Khally Balak Men Zouzou, which was made later in her life, and she played a non-dancing role. What about her earlier movies, where she did have dancing roles? The Stars of Egypt video series by Hossam Ramzy dedicates 90 minutes to film clips of Tahia Carioca - so where are all the movies that these come from?

I find that I really like the clips I've seen of Tahia Carioca. I wish I could find and watch the movies they come from!

I'm dancing to a Bulgarian Gypsy song (Pobjednicki Coçek), so I didn't dress in my usual tribal costumes, I took at stab at seeming Bulgarian.

And no, I'm not sweating profusely, I actually drenched myself in baby oil to make myself a bit more reflective while I dance. I will also warn you that it is rather dark in this clip. I look like a magic torso against the black backdrop. :)

Given the post about "translations for this tribe only" I want to make it clear that I am, by no means, in any hurry for this and appreciate whatever insight / translation you can provide. The song is "Ya Shadil Al-Han" and I found it on Turbo Tabla's "Bellydance Overdrive". It sounds like a chant of sorts. I would love to choreograph a dance to it, but want to make sure I'm understanding and respecting the intent of the song.
***Please note: if you are unaware of transliterated arabic Jargon with the use of numbers to sybolise certian arabic phonemes and pronounciations, simply say the word as if there was no number evident in the word, and it will sound 90% similar to proper arabic.***
