Shakira Om Mia is doing gigs in Portland in one of the sweetest hagglah dresses in the west. Bought from Little Egypt, I think it has paid itself back, yes?

Jasmine is our working gal--Fridays at Tanjia and a regular sub at El Mansour, and definitely doing the circuit. We only live 25 or 30 miles from one another, but that bridge and that tunnel can be so daunting, eh girl? :)

I actually had a decent performance year (wedding season was kind this year), and am also teaching a lot--added a new beginner class, have some amazing private students. Hosting my annual winter student showcase/holiday partay December 6. I'll dance, some of my students will dance, and I have two pro guest dancers, Naiya and Salena. It will be fun! If you are in SF that night come on down to the studio for food, wine, and dance. Keepin' it low key and upbeat.

I also will need to move from my long time rent controlled bubble early next year. Expect cries of frustration, tears of rage, and some begging for help in my blog. :) I'll start here--if anyone knows of any sweet one or two bedrooms in SF for my partner and I that will be available in the next couple of months, let me know. We make good neighbors (and we make good food, so you can come over and eat with us anytime). And yeah, we are considering Oakland. SF is not so friendly for belly dancers and musicians anymore. But we hold out hope!

*So*---> 2008, Raqs Habibi...we have a few things up our sleeve, but are also looking on the horizon. What are you all planning for '08? What are the events not to miss? As a geographically challenged trio we have to travel to be together no matter what we do, so are open to branching out for shows.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BELLY DANCE ADDICTION:
RECOGNIZING YOUR PROBLEM
BY PRINCESS FARHANA
In this day and age, we can all speak freely and without shame about our dysfunctions. Anger management? Substance abuse? Gambling? Shopping addiction?
There is always a support group in place to help you. But there is one serious problem that society hasn't yet addressed, and it's affected a growing number of individuals the world over. The problem is BELLY DANCE ADDICTION. Has belly dancing taken over your life? Does it dominate your thoughts and prevent you from performing simple daily tasks? Will it ever be possible for those who suffer from this affliction to lead a normal life? Have you hit Balady Bottom?
The first step towards a full recovery is to admit that you are powerless over your addiction. Please spend a few minutes to take a long, hard look at yourself and your lifestyle… and to answer these key questions as honestly as possible to determine if YOU are a Belly Dance Addict!
YOU MAY SUFFER FROM BELLY DANCE ADDICTION IF:
You open your costume closet and its contents are equal to the down payment on a large house.
You have no idea what the works of Bach or Beethhoven sound like, but can easily identify the work of Abdel Halim Hafez or Farid Al Atrache.
You own more "bling-bling" than any chart-topping hip-hop artist.
Your hair-do is larger, more elaborate, flower and feather-filled than a Las Vegas showgirl's headdress.
You cannot identify designs by Gucci, Versace, Prada or Dior, but can readily tell the difference between designs by Amira El Khattan, Bella, Madam Abla and Eman…from across the room!
You talk about Dina and Fifi, Suhaila, Kajira, Sahra and Aziza so much that your confused friends politely ask if those women are your family members.
On a visit to a crafts or sewing store, you need to bring along a "safety buddy" to give you a "reality check" and prevent you from going on a wild spending spree.
After a visit to a crafts or sewing store, you are consumed by shame and guilt and in tears, actually cut up your credit card.
Your cell phone has a specially downloaded Om Kalthoum ringtone.
You have the call-in line for Rakassah on speed-dial.
Solace is not merely emotional comfort, but your favorite band.
You hone your shimmies while waiting in line at the bank, post office or grocery store.
During tax season, your accountant pointedly asks you how it is possible you spent over $700.00 last year on make-up alone.
You don't live in your Levi's and a T-shirt…you live in Melodias and a Choli.
…Actually, you don't really wear street clothes any more!
You mass e-mailed everyone you know to inform them that you FINALLY mastered a down-hip 3/4 shimmy.
Your wallet is held together by a rubber band because it's routinely over-stuffed with tip money.
You are not familiar with popular television shows such as "Lost", "American Idol" and "Desperate Housewives" but can recite -- from memory alone -- the running order of any IAMED live show DVD.
You believe that a stop at a traffic signal is the optimal time to perfect your belly rolls…and for practicing your "air zills".
You've been seriously pondering the idea that mastering a 9/8 cymbal pattern could lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.
The word "understated" would never apply to your personal fashion statement…and is no longer even a part of your vocabulary.
To you, "pop music" doesn't mean Justin Timberlake or Gwen Stefani… it means Nancy Ajram or Hakim.
Your movements can easily be traced…. Just follow the trail of glitter!
***END***
Shakira Om Mia hit Oaktown this morning, and because she, well, she raqs--she has a gig booked for this evening! Wearing a new costume she bought in Dallas, I believe...
Hope to hit Al Amir when we arrive to check out some local dance and music, then plan to spend a few hours Friday afternoon in the dance studio--preparing and doing some final rehearsing for our small part of the show that night at Little Egypt's kickoff to the Fifi Abdo weekend.
No pressure. :)
By Saturday we can chill out and soak in some Fifi fabulousness during her workshop, then put on some schnazy duds to see the show that evening. I know I am not alone in loving and being majorly inspired by Fifi, but I have never seen her live. Is it obvious I am just a little excited?
I know lots of y'all are going, can't wait to see you there. If we know ya say hi. If we don't know ya yet, say hi! I'll take lots of pics and post them after the weekend, as well.
Raqs Habibi is having a marathon practice and choreography session soon.
We are a trio with members that live in different parts of the country...though two in the same area, and all of us on the same coast, which is nice.
That means one or two of us fly in to the other's city, we get massive amounts of caffeine, and we go to a dance studio. For hours and hours and hours. We have music to work with, already chosen and cut, we have been talking on the phone and over email, and we know what need to be done. We work, maybe stop to laugh, dish, drink more caffeine, cry, whatever it takes. Then we practice and make dances some more. Then we video tape for a bit.
Then we go out and imbibe massive amount of food and drink. Maybe catch a belly dance show somewhere. Then we go back to the house, watch our video, and make a plan for the next day. Then...we sleep.
Then we wake up and do it all over again, and in the evening one or two of us get on a plane to go home.
It is crazy, but...it works. (Knock wood.)
Granted: we have a similar vision, a shared idea about what we want to accomplish and how we want to dance together. We have known each other a long time, and all worked together in various projects as far as up to--actually now quite a bit more than!--a decade ago. There is an intuitive feeling I know I have when I dance with Jas and Shak. I also know that I can trust them, 100%, on stage. If I were to spaz out, lose my place, fall on my face, whatever, they would handle it. I have not had to test the limits of this stage based trust, thankfully, but I know it is there!
The short story? I am excited for our next practice marathon.
Okay, I am on a posting jag today. I am spending my final week of my winter holiday thinking about what I want to do dance-wise in the next year.
How often do you practice? What are your practice sessions like?
While I try to dance every day, and usually succeed in doing so, I tend to have more focused practice sessions when I have a gig coming up or am working on new choreography and combinations. I count teaching as a form of practice, as well.
I would like to formalize my practice sessions a bit more. I have never been one to work along with instructional videos, but I might try to use Aziza'a practice companion. I am more likely to put on a Fifi Abdo video or a Naima Akef movie and copy what they do to try to feel it in my own body. Do any of you use videos in that way? In another way?
I also just bought a shemadan! By the end of the year I would like to be comfortable dancing with it and would like to be able to do the splits. How many dance forms allow you to have a flaming candelabra on your head while dancing? How can I not take the opportunity to do that! My wedding gigs will be augmented. Hopefully everyone's fire permits will be in order... :)
I also put money aside to take more workshops this year. I miss regular classes as well. I think I will start attending Lorna Zilba's class on Sunday afternoons again, will continue with flamenco classes with Yaelisa, and may take some private lessons with Nanna Candelaria. I also hope to start doing yoga or pilates regularly again. I want to dance through my 30s and need to whip myself into shape to do so with stamina and style! I am learning that 33 ain't 23.
If any of you want to share your practice goals for 2007 here I would love to read about them!
