sword construction

im working out the finer details of my sword. and the balance is off. are there any rules about putting a metal core in the butt end for balance. im not using it as a striking surface and its at the bottom so its no a flexibility issue. i know im just going to cover it with tape so the marshal wont know the diffrence. but im just worried about the saftey concerns of other fighters

I guess it depends on what you put on the end. You might want to consider a mandrake pommel. That might help the balance issue.

it is an option. there is enough room under my basket hilt. but i wasnt planing on puting anything on the end. i want to put a two or three inch piece of 1/4 steel round stock in a hole i drill in the center of the butt end of my sword. and im wondering if anyone would have a problem with it?

If you do this, make sure that you epoxy the metal into the hole. Otherwise the metal will vibrate when you strike and cause the grip end of the sword to split.

when you say "epoxy". will Barge sole cement do?

I like to use decoy weights. Decoys from duck hunting and the ballast weights are 1/2" strips of lead like material about 8" long. I merely wind the strip around the base of my sword and tape over. This provides a low profile and will stay in place over the life of the rattan.

i ended up doing something similar. i taped up the butt end to get a snug fit and slid 2 inch steel rings over it. then taped up below the rings so even if thay come loose they wont fall of the sword. but i know the stuff your talking about. when i was a kid we used that stuff on the bottoms of are pinebox durby cars in boy scouts. i may just go that route next time thanks.

What kind of basket hilt do you use? I've got a resin one that may need some sort of weight treatment as you're inquiring, but I have a bronze one that is heavy enough to keep my sword well balanced for a hand and a half size blade. For the resin basket i usually have an arm length sword.

its a steel wire basket, made from 1/4 in round stock. its a little too heavy to use with a short sword. but with a couple oz extra wieght on the back end. i ballanced out a 42 in piece of rattan.

if the base of the hilt is open, then a rod would work. Or you could get a piece of pipe the same diameter as the bottom and screw it to the sword.

if its a closed bottom then you could put some washers in the base.
