Fighting stance

I just wanted to get an idea for how people stand with sword and shield. What is your style and why do you fight like that?

I typically fight in a boxer stance with the sword angled in front of my visor. It seems a fairly common guard, the shots feel like they are being thrown fast, and its descent for deffence. I also fight in a guard where my shield is squared to my opponent and my sword is angled down my back. I dont know why I fight like that but it feels comfortable.

Depends on the situation. For a normal tourney, I try to go with a Half Horse Stance. Its very stable, easy to move from, and works well with SCA waist base sword shots. In melee's I often go into a Bow and Arrow Stance, get enough stability to stop dead an Atlantian charge. (Should have seen the look on the poor point man crushed against my shield last Kingdom Crusades!)

For pole arm, I typically stick with the Bow and Arrow Stance. I also like to use a more advanced stance called Steel Stance as it is highly stable and meneuverable, but drains more energy to stay there long so I will step in and out of it.

These are all Kung Fu stances. Anyone who says martial arts doesn't apply to SCA combat doesn't know much about either.

I tend to square up to my opponent with my sword hand forward. This gives me a broader front to attack from and it also brings my sword closer so it takes at least a half second off my flat snap. I've developed power on the offside too so that also works. If you step around your opponent from this position you can place yourself at the advantage.

I am with Animal on this one. I usually hold my sword more in front of me for the same reason. Shortest distance to the target. Speed is your friend.

I also use a center boss shield and this has begun to move towards the target lately as well ... kind of like the goalie coming out of the net. It covers you more, eliminates opportunities for you opponent.

I've been looking for Steel Stance online and can't find an example of it. I generally fight spear/buckler combo and would like to see this stance to see if it would work for me.

      Thanks for any help,

So many stances, all of which are applicable to SCA combat to a greater or lesser degree. Boxing, Horse, bow and arrow, steel, on and on.... Just remeber, like weapon forms, there is no superior STANCE, just superior warriors.

Whatever you use, make sure you are comfortable, practice the stance diligently, and understand it's strengths and weaknesses.

One of the best people I trained, as far as footwork and stance goes, played TENNIS.

I'm told I use a number of different stances, depnding on what my opponent is doing. I've practice (and continue to practice) them all, to the point I really don't think about it.

Hmmm... had a link to a better pic at one time but can't find it now. This one looks good enough:

The bottom row, center guy and the one to his right. You are basically crossing your legs, both knees bent and almost touching, but feet apart so it is still stable. Forward foot flat, back foot on the ball. If you start with a horse stance or something similar, you will end up in this if you twist your waist but keep your feet in place, or if you do a wide cross leg stepping. The advantage to this stance, is that is very stable if you transition through it, and you can change direction very easily.

For spear, consider it as something to twist into when thrusting, rather than leaning into a lunge. You can get much of the extra distance without going off balance.

i use a modified A frame stace...it works for me. i stand shield side slightly presented, with my shield ( a coffin lid shaped take on a kite shield) and sword forming an A in front of me...it offers good defense and quick snaps...but is slightly slower on the offside shots.
