Rachel Kay Brookmire, Egyptian Dance, 12:00 – 1:00: Rachel is the founder and Creative Director of Sahara Dance, DC's Center for Middle Eastern Dance. A sought-after performer and instructor, Rachel specializes in modern Egyptian raqs sharqi. She has shared the stage with international artists including Lebanese pop stars Nancy Ajram and Fadel Chaker. As the Director of Sahara Dance resident company, Raqs Sahara, Rachel seeks to elevate Oriental dance as a theater performance art. Join Rachel for unique Egyptian dance combinations that are playful, earthy and elegant. Designed with a wide range of dynamics and movements, this class has something for everyone!
Kostana, Turkish Dance, 1:15 – 2:15: Kostana is an Oriental Dancer based in the Washington, DC area specializing in Turkish Oriental and Romani (Gypsy) dance as well as Egyptian Raqs al Sharqi. She has studied with renowned Romani and Cabaret dancers in Turkey as well as throughout the United States. Kostana teaches at Saffron Dance School in Arlington, VA and is Director of Programs for The World Music Folklife Center. Join Kostana for an introduction to Turkish 9/8 and learn how Turkish Oryantal and Turkish Romani dance differ from Egyptian Raqs Sharqi. Explore movements for the 9/8 rhythm with basic footwork, gestures & fun combinations!
Azin, Persian Bandari, 2:30 – 3:30: Azin is of Persian descent and owner of Born 2 Dance Studio in Vienna, Virginia. She offers a wide range of world dance programs including a variety of Persian and Iranian dance forms. Azin will impart her passion and knowledge of these dances from her heritage in a high-energy class focusing on the joyous Bandari dance! With strong ties to the sea, Bandari reflects the traditions of the Persian Gulf region of Iran where the influence of Arab, Indian and African cultures blends with those of the Persian culture. Azin will present the steps, movements and flavor of this popular and spirited dance which Iranians perform in celebrations worldwide!
