Thu, May 15, 2008 - 5:12 PMSh'ma Yis'ra'eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad.
Something my children liked:
Pray as if everything depends upon God.
Act as if everything depends upon You.

Re: What does this quote mean to you?
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 5:23 PMPeople live their lives in panic, because they think they can or should be in control of everything, which is impossible. If you can accept that not all things are in your hand, you must leave those things to God - or, the acceptance that life will do as it wills. Things are occurring as they should.

Re: What does this quote mean to you?
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 11:33 PMTo me it means BS. Because in my opinion....
...God isn't, and all isn't well.
Much may be well. Most may be well. Important things may be well. But not all is.
And I don't care who you are, God is a concept. Not a finite 'is'.
So to me, that quote is annoying.

Re: What does this quote mean to you?
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 12:02 AM"god" doesn't give a shit about my life, suffering, joy, the lives of those around me, or the entire world. if the whole planet blew into a billion shreds, it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference to "god" because "god" is beyond all physical reality, good, evil, joy, pain, life, death, etc.
so nothing really matters to "god"... but it does matter to me, because i live here in the physical world. and i'd prefer to get rid of as much suffering as i can, and i'd kind of prefer it if the world didn't blow into a billion shreds.
not to say that it's not a good thing to sometimes realize how minute this all is... that, ultimately, it's meaningless. to sometimes enter that space where you feel that helps to keep from taking life to seriously. it's a little break when life is hard and you can't afford the real vacation that you desperately need. you take your vacation in your mind to the furthest reaches of space where the earth isn't even visible, and your life doesn't even exist as far as anyone knows.
but all in all, it's just one of those "teachings" that's used to keep people passive and showing up for work. -

Fri, May 16, 2008 - 10:23 AMPlus ca change, plus c'est la même chose....
The more things change, the more they remain the same. What comes around, goes around and visa versa, It goes full circle. It is, what it is, nothing more and nothing less. -

I'm such a control freak, and have been since an early age, that complacency and lack of action and support for the beliefs I hold true, has never been an issue for me. In fact it's the belief that I can make a difference that drives me to take action. Having hope and faith that I can make a difference make all the difference in my life. Taking action and having no control over the outcome is a challenge for the non-believer, but for the believer, this is common place. the non-believer can only work through their sphere of what they can see, hear, touch... what can be proven, a finite world. Not me.
Just because I cannot prove electricity, I still believe in it as it works for me every day.
And as I cannot prove there is a universal spirit or connection running through us all, I can recognize and acknowledge a high percentage of "coincidences" in my life which support exactly that.
I also recognize that non-believers have just as many self-justifications for their beliefs as I do for mine. =)
I'm really impressed with the amount of diversity here.
=-)
Cheers,
Cooks

Re: What does this quote mean to you?
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 1:43 PMWell, in that G-d to most that are willingly to let the term suffice--means the good--Then, all is well to the degree that we deal w/the known. G-d only manifests what is, & there is NOTHING outside the known. AND NO--that is not a value statement. It is the same as saying Aum sat tat. The truth is thus. We live in an illusion & traditionalism is just bunk. So, look at the reality that G-d doesn't come to court. Even the Book of Job clearly suggest this. Why the idea that the bible throughout its dullness can't have something lucid like THAT to learn from & is ignored as so much else of it ought to be--is kinda closed-mindedness just as those who attend to its history are accused of being.
