“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain
What do you intend to do this year that's in keeping with this quote, if anything?
I intend to start scuba diving again...it has been years since I last went on a dive....

Re: taking risks
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 5:22 AMFunny you should ask, I'm selling, giving, or throwing away, everything I have, and living in a 21ft motor home, ( my rolling studio).
I'm traveling around the country giving away 10,000 pieces of original Art. Paintings for the most part, a lot of 2 1/2 x 3 1/2" " pocket art", and 4 x 6".
I do 5 x 7" double sided " Cosmic Cloud Surfer " cards for shut ins. Those for the most part are free association Art, that you look for, what you look for, kind of Psychedelic Rorschach tests. Gives the otherwise lazy brain something to do.
For the past 10 years or so, I've been moving around the country every couple of years experancing people of different cultures and sub cultures, doing Art work. Now I'll be on the road fulltime, able to spend extended time in remote aerias.
I've started a Tribe " The Ten Thousand Things " to share the progress of the project. , I also have "Bad Art Dog" tribe, with my older body of work. I'll be blogging and posting pics of my travels on 10,000 things. I'm headed out the door to my yard sale for this very purpose. -

Re: taking risks
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 1:24 PMI've started some of those things already. I've begun an academic year of study at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition which will qualify me to be a health counselor. I'm also aiming to write a book on brain health this year, and we'll see after that. Eventually, I want to find time annually to travel to other cultures, and learn herbal practices from the indigenous peoples to later write about. At some point, I'd like to become a naturopath, but the baby steps approach works just fine. Remember "What about Bob?" ;o)

Re: taking risks
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 3:41 PMIn January, I'll be moving into an ice shanty (a shack for ice fishing for those of you from warm climates) on a frozen lake as part of an art project. I'm a claustrophobe who hates the cold, so this should be a test for me. I'll be living there for a little over a month... after that, I'm not sure where I'm going... crossing bridges as they come. Another summer of experimenting with life, then maybe a huge change in direction and starting school in the fall. -

Re: taking risks
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 4:11 PMHa! Got a wood stove... and we'll be using passive solar heat to some degree... to what degree is yet to be determined. It might just be direct heat through glass during the day, but we may build a collector to store and distribute heat through the night. -

Re: taking risks

Re: taking risks
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 4:28 PMI think I've got access to some deep cycle batteries, probably get a solar panel and dc/ac converter and have some electricity. We're planning to be able to host music and performance without using a generator.

Re: taking risks
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 1:43 PMThis is actually part of a larger project called "The Art Shanty Project". A bunch of artists form a community of ice fishing shacks on the lake. I'm working for the project as a coordinator, building a sort of headquarters shanty where performances can be held, information distributed, first aid applied if needed, etc. Then staying out on the lake to make sure everything's in check.
But it's actually kind of fitting into a sort of long "art project", or at least experiment/study that I've been doing for years... playing with alternative living situations, exploring the concepts of individuality and community, resourcefulness, survivalism, biases in human interaction, etc. This is my favorite kind of art... life as art... experimenting and paying close attention to what you "create" in the world around you. -

Re: taking risks
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 12:37 AM:) I try to do a little of everything...provided its not harmful to my body.
So this month I head to Egypt.
Next year I want to go to at least one more place with ancient ruins - Peru...start a year long course on herbology..hmm maybe I will take some electives in archeology for shits and giggles and travel to specific ruins.
I can honestly say I've done a bit in my time...and now its all about keeping my health and energy levels high enough so I can continue to engage in more traveling adventures.

Re: taking risks
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 7:05 PMI'm applying to a grad program at a very big and intimidating university that I previously never would have thought I might aspire to. The thought of getting accepted scares me, so does the thought of not getting accepted.
Oy. -

Re: taking risks
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 10:06 AMhaven't thought about next year as this year has been good to me. Found my Birth mother, have yet to meet her face to face; just emails, took a trip to Scotland to see the Calanish stones and came home with a raven feather, just about finished my second degree clergy requirements and kept my job. Would like to have gone to the World Confrence of Religions this December 2009 in Australia, but have no money to go to that.
2010 realy don't know. Possible mentoring in the Tradition I am following, Like Ro take a trip to some ancient site that has special meanings to it to learn about another culture, Enjoy life and be a bit simplier in my life style. Read some books that I have not read and should. and of course keep telling my partner how special she is....
Exio, enjoy your ice shanty time, have wanted to go ice fishing in a shanty and never did. keep us posted as to your adventures.

Re: taking risks
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 1:32 PMHeh... actually, what I'm planning on doing is about as in keeping with the quote as possible. I'm planning on finally taking my boat on some longer trips. We often go out on little weekend camping excursions in our local area, but in a couple weeks we're going to go on a longer trip further down the coast. And gradually work on going further and further. Someday Cuba will be opened up for official travel, and I'd like to have the skills and experience to be able to take myself there when that day comes.
Next weekend we'll be heading down the coast to a small fishing town where I've reserved a slip in their marina. We're bringing the kayaks and a couple bicycles to explore the little downtown shops and restaurants. Hang out with the local boat crowd for a few days then head home. Fortunately, we just had what was hopefully our last hurricane this season last night (I was up every hour or so adjusting lines and fenders for the storm surge) so hopefully the weather will be decent.
So I will be quite literally casting off the bow lines, sailing away from the safe harbor, filling my sails, and doing some exploring, dreaming, and discovering :) -

Re: taking risks
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 3:30 PMWay cool, Waylon! Bon Voyage.
Let's see.....I'm launching a little side business auctioning off items on eBay. I work for an ecommerce site that sells crystal and mineral specimens and many of our shipments come in with only about 95% salable items so I'm taking the other 5% and selling them in auction. My parent company pays for my time to run it, the fees, shipping, and other misc. expenses and I get 20% of the profit. Meanwhile I learn a bit more about retail sales and ecommerce without risking any of my own money or wasting my time. Sweet!
I'm going to take a big risk and start putting together my own clothing designs and selling them as one-of-a-kind couture. I have a rack and a half of pieces I've picked up from shops and sales and four bins of scraps so I think I have enough to come up with some killer pieces. Maybe Lady Gaga is looking for a new seamstress.
Geez, I must be getting old...there aren't any more things even remotely risky on the horizon. Let's hope the Universal Minds don't get the idea that I'm bored and need something to do. -
